Outdoor noise — from busy roads, nearby construction, barking dogs, or loud neighbors — can seriously impact comfort, sleep, and overall quality of life.

While you can’t fully soundproof an outdoor space, outdoor sound barriers can significantly reduce unwanted noise by blocking, absorbing, and deflecting sound before it reaches your home or yard.

This guide explains how outdoor sound barriers work, the best types available, and how to choose the right solution for noise from traffic, neighbors, or other external sources.

1. Solid Fence Sound Barriers

Best for: Noisy neighbors, nearby yards, moderate traffic noise

Solid fence sound barriers are one of the most common and effective ways to reduce outdoor noise when they are built correctly. Their effectiveness comes from density and tight construction.

A solid fence works by blocking the direct path of sound between the noise source and your property, forcing sound waves to travel over or around the barrier, which significantly reduces their intensity. Even small gaps between panels, boards, or posts can allow sound to leak through, so careful construction is essential.

The most effective solid fences are made from materials that provide both mass and minimal openings:

Wood fences built with tongue-and-groove or board-on-board designs perform well because they eliminate gaps that are common in standard fencing.

Vinyl privacy fencing and composite fencing are also strong options, as they are manufactured as continuous panels with consistent density.

Concrete and masonry walls offer the highest level of sound blocking due to their weight and solidity, making them particularly effective in high-noise environments.

When properly installed, solid fences are highly effective at blocking mid- and high-frequency noise such as voices, music, barking dogs, and general neighborhood activity. In addition to reducing noise, they also function as privacy fences and are typically durable and weather-resistant, making them a long-term outdoor solution.

However, solid fence sound barriers do have limitations. Local zoning or HOA regulations may limit fence height, which can restrict how much noise reduction is achievable.

Performance can be greatly improved by enhancing a solid fence with materials like mass-loaded vinyl (MLV) or exterior acoustic panels. These additions increase sound absorption and overall effectiveness, especially in areas exposed to persistent or louder noise sources.

2. Outdoor Soundproofing Panels & Sound Walls

Best for: Traffic noise, constant outdoor noise, patios, and decks

Outdoor soundproofing panels are designed primarily to block sound, not absorb it (unlike indoor acoustic panels). In outdoor environments, true sound absorption is far less effective than indoors because sound energy quickly escapes into open space. Instead, outdoor soundproofing panels rely on mass, density, and airtight construction to stop noise from traveling directly toward living areas.

These panels are typically built with dense cores — such as composite materials or mass-loaded layers — that prevent sound waves from passing through. When installed as a continuous barrier, they interrupt the direct line of sight between the noise source and the listener, which is the most effective way to reduce outdoor noise.

Outdoor soundproofing panels are engineered for exterior conditions and use weather-resistant materials that can withstand rain, wind, UV exposure, and temperature changes. While large sound walls are commonly used along highways and commercial properties, residential-scale soundproofing panels are now available for backyards, patios, and property lines.

For best results, these panels must face the noise source directly and be installed with no gaps at the base or between panels. They are often paired with solid fences or walls to increase overall mass and improve noise reduction. While some systems may include a thin absorptive surface to reduce minor reflections, their primary function remains sound blocking.

Outdoor soundproofing panels require careful placement and are generally more expensive than standard fencing. But, when installed correctly, they are one of the most effective solutions for reducing traffic noise and other constant outdoor sound sources.

3. Earth Berms and Landscape Sound Barriers

Best for: Traffic noise, large properties

Earth berms and landscape sound barriers reduce noise by using mass and elevation to block sound naturally. An earth berm is a raised mound of soil positioned between a noise source and the area you want to protect. Because soil is dense and thick, berms are especially effective at reducing low-frequency noise, such as the constant rumble produced by traffic or heavy machinery.

When designed correctly, earth berms can provide a high level of noise reduction while blending seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. They are often combined with solid fencing, retaining walls, or dense vegetation to improve both acoustic performance and visual appeal.

The added height from a berm helps break the line of sight between the noise source and the listener, which is critical for effective sound reduction.

One of the main advantages of earth berms is their durability. Once constructed, they require very little maintenance and can last for decades. However, they do require a significant amount of space and a higher upfront investment for excavation and landscaping. For properties with enough room, earth berms offer one of the most effective and natural-looking solutions for controlling outdoor noise, particularly from busy roads or highways.

4. Vegetation and Green Barriers (Trees & Hedges)

Best for: Mild noise reduction, visual screening

Vegetation and green barriers can help reduce outdoor noise, though they are most effective when used as a supplement rather than a standalone soundproofing solution. Plants do not block sound in the same way as solid barriers, but dense foliage can scatter and soften high-frequency noise while also masking unwanted sounds with natural ambient noise, such as rustling leaves.

Evergreen hedges, clumping bamboo, and thick shrubs work best because they maintain dense coverage year-round and create a continuous visual and acoustic buffer. When combined with solid fencing, vegetation can improve overall noise reduction by reducing sound reflections and making noise feel less intrusive.

Green barriers are especially useful along property lines, patios, and garden spaces where visual privacy is just as important as sound control.

The main advantages of vegetation-based barriers are their aesthetic and environmental benefits. They enhance landscaping, improve privacy, and contribute positively to the surrounding ecosystem.

However, on their own, they provide limited noise reduction and require time to grow and mature. For best results, vegetation is most effective when paired with solid fences, walls, or acoustic panels as part of a layered noise-reduction approach.

5. Temporary & Portable Outdoor Sound Barriers

Best for: Temporary noise issues, renters, events

Temporary and portable outdoor sound barriers are designed to reduce noise on a short-term basis without requiring permanent installation. These barriers typically use absorptive panels, sound blankets, or heavy acoustic curtains to help dampen noise and reduce reflections. They are commonly used at construction sites, outdoor events, or in residential situations where permanent structures are not allowed or practical.

Because they are lighter and movable, portable sound barriers offer flexibility that permanent solutions cannot. They can be repositioned as needed, stored when not in use, and deployed only during noisy periods. This makes them especially useful for renters, homeowners dealing with temporary construction noise, or anyone hosting outdoor gatherings who wants to limit sound spread.

However, portable barriers are generally less effective than permanent sound walls or solid fences. Their performance is limited by size, weight, and weather exposure, and they tend to be less durable over time.

While they won’t provide the same level of noise reduction as permanent installations, temporary and portable sound barriers can still offer noticeable improvements for short-term or situational noise problems.

Tailored Solutions: Traffic Noise vs. Neighbor Noise

Now that you understand the main types of outdoor sound barriers, it’s helpful to look at targeted solutions for the two most common sources of outdoor noise: traffic and neighbors. Each presents different challenges and requires a slightly different approach.

Reducing Traffic Noise

Traffic noise is dominated by low frequencies and a steady, continuous rumble, which makes it more difficult to control than other types of outdoor noise. Low-frequency sound waves are powerful and tend to travel long distances, easily bending around obstacles that are not tall or dense enough. For this reason, traffic noise reduction requires barriers that provide significant mass and height.

Earth berms combined with solid walls are among the most effective solutions for traffic noise, as the thick soil mass blocks and weakens low-frequency sound energy. For best results, barriers should be placed as close to the road or noise source as possible, which helps intercept sound before it spreads.

Reducing Neighbor Noise

Neighbor noise usually consists of mid- and high-frequency sounds such as voices, music, and general social activity. These frequencies are easier to block than traffic noise and respond well to solid, gap-free barriers that interrupt the direct line of sound between properties.

A tall, tightly constructed solid fence is often the most effective starting point for reducing neighbor noise. Performance can be further improved by adding sound-damping or soundproofing panels to the fence, which help limit sound reflections between properties. Dense vegetation can also be incorporated to improve visual privacy and provide light sound masking, making noise feel less intrusive.

An effective setup for neighbor noise is a solid timber fence paired with soundproofing panels and an evergreen hedge. This layered approach blocks direct noise, reduces reflected sound, and enhances both privacy and visual appeal.

Installation & Placement Tips

Proper installation and placement are just as important as the type of sound barrier you choose.

Height plays a major role in noise reduction, as taller barriers are able to block more sound, particularly traffic noise that tends to travel in a straight line before spreading. In many cases, increasing barrier height delivers a noticeable improvement in performance.

Equally important is eliminating gaps. Even small openings at the base of a fence, between panels, or around posts can allow sound to pass through or around the barrier, significantly reducing its effectiveness. A continuous, tightly sealed structure is essential for meaningful noise control.

Placement also matters. Sound barriers work best when positioned as close to the noise source as possible, whether that is a road, neighboring yard, or mechanical equipment. Intercepting sound early prevents it from spreading and wrapping around the barrier.

Finally, aesthetics and airflow should be considered alongside performance. Combining sound barriers with plants, hedges, or trellises can soften their appearance, improve visual appeal, and help the barrier blend naturally into the surrounding landscape without compromising effectiveness.

Final Thoughts & Practical Tips

Outdoor sound barriers won’t make your yard or home completely silent, but when designed and installed correctly, they can dramatically reduce unwanted noise and restore privacy. The most effective solutions focus on stopping sound before it spreads by breaking the direct path between the noise source and your living space.

For the best results, always match the barrier type to the noise source. In many cases, combining multiple elements delivers better results than relying on a single solution.

Here are some final tips for success:

Prioritize height and mass: Taller, denser barriers block more sound than lightweight or low structures.

Eliminate gaps: Seal openings at the base, between panels, and around posts to prevent sound leakage.

Place barriers close to the source: Intercepting sound early improves overall noise reduction.

Match the solution to the noise type: Use heavy barriers for traffic noise and solid, continuous fencing for neighbor noise.

Combine solutions when possible: Layering barriers often delivers better results than a single approach.

Balance performance with appearance: Use plants, hedges, or trellises to soften the look without reducing effectiveness.

Set realistic expectations: Outdoor sound barriers reduce noise but won’t eliminate it entirely.

Acoustic panels are essential for improving sound quality in homes, studios, offices, and commercial spaces. They reduce echo, control reverberation, and make rooms sound clearer and more comfortable.

However, not all acoustic panels are the same — each type serves a different purpose and aesthetic.

Below is a detailed guide to the best types of acoustic panels, including wood-slat, foam, fabric-wrapped, and other popular options, to help you choose the right solution for your space.

Wood Slat Acoustic Panels

Best for: Modern interiors, living rooms, offices, restaurants, and stylish studios

Wood slat acoustic panels are a premium sound treatment solution that seamlessly blends acoustic performance with architectural design.

These panels typically consist of evenly spaced wooden slats (often made from MDF, oak veneer, walnut, or other hardwood finishes) mounted on top of an acoustic felt or mineral-fiber backing. The felt absorbs sound energy while the slats help diffuse reflections, creating a more balanced and natural sound environment.

Unlike traditional acoustic panels that are designed to be hidden, wood slat panels are meant to be seen and celebrated. They function as both a sound treatment and a design feature, making them especially popular in high-end residential and commercial spaces.

Acoustic Performance

Wood slat panels are particularly effective at controlling mid to high-frequency reflections, which are responsible for echo, harshness, and poor speech clarity.

While the wooden slats themselves are reflective, the spacing between them allows sound waves to pass through and be absorbed by the backing material. This hybrid absorption-and-diffusion effect helps create a more comfortable and acoustically balanced room.

For improved low-frequency performance, wood slat panels can be paired with thicker acoustic backing or mineral wool insulation, or combined with bass traps elsewhere in the room.

Installation

Wood slat acoustic panels are typically installed directly onto walls or ceilings using screws, mounting rails, or construction adhesive, depending on the panel design. While many systems are DIY-friendly, larger installations or feature walls may benefit from professional installation to ensure proper alignment and optimal acoustic performance.

Pros

Excellent balance of visual appeal and sound absorption

Improves speech intelligibility and listening comfort

Adds warmth, depth, and texture to walls or ceilings

Available in many finishes, colors, and slat widths

Highly durable and suitable for long-term installations

Cons

Higher cost compared to foam or basic fabric panels

Installation may require more planning or professional help

Less effective for deep bass frequencies on their own

Ideal Use Case

If you want a room that sounds controlled, professional, and refined — without sacrificing interior design — wood slat acoustic panels are one of the best high-end acoustic solutions available.

Product Recommendation

NeatiEase Wood Panels for Walls are a practical option for both residential and commercial spaces. They are available in five different colors, making them easy to integrate into a wide range of interiors.
Foam Acoustic Panels

Best for: Home studios, podcast rooms, gaming setups, and practice spaces

Foam acoustic panels are one of the most widely recognized sound treatment options and are often the first choice for beginners.

Made from open-cell polyurethane foam, these panels are designed to absorb sound waves by converting acoustic energy into small amounts of heat as sound passes through the porous material.

They are commonly shaped into wedges, pyramids, or egg-carton patterns, which increase surface area and improve absorption efficiency — particularly for higher frequencies.

Acoustic Performance

Foam panels are most effective at reducing flutter echo, slapback echo, and harsh high-frequency reflections.

They work best in small to medium-sized rooms where reflections bounce rapidly between parallel surfaces. However, due to their lightweight construction, foam panels have limited effectiveness in controlling low-frequency bass, which often requires thicker, denser materials.

Installation

Foam acoustic panels are lightweight and easy to install using adhesive tabs, double-sided tape, or spray adhesive. They can be mounted directly to walls or ceilings, making them ideal for renters or temporary setups, though care should be taken to avoid surface damage when removing them.

Pros

Very affordable and accessible

Lightweight and easy to mount with adhesive or strips

Ideal for quick acoustic improvements

Available in many shapes, colors, and sizes

Effective for speech clarity and vocal recordings

Cons

Minimal low-frequency absorption

Can look utilitarian or overly “studio-like”

Degrades faster than wood or fabric panels

Not always fire-rated unless specifically certified

Ideal Use Case

Foam acoustic panels are perfect for entry-level sound treatment, temporary setups, or spaces where budget and simplicity matter more than aesthetics. They are especially useful for podcasters, streamers, gamers, and hobbyist musicians looking for a cost-effective improvement in sound clarity.

Product Recommendation

Fabric-Wrapped Acoustic Panels

Best for: Offices, conference rooms, classrooms, home theaters

Fabric-wrapped acoustic panels are one of the most effective and versatile sound treatment solutions available. These panels are constructed with a dense sound-absorbing core (typically fiberglass or mineral wool) encased in an acoustically transparent fabric that allows sound waves to pass through and be absorbed efficiently.

Because of their clean appearance and strong acoustic performance, fabric-wrapped panels are widely used in both commercial and residential environments. They are designed to reduce echo, control reverberation, and significantly improve speech intelligibility without overwhelming the visual design of a room.

One of the biggest advantages of fabric-wrapped panels is their customizability. They are available in a wide range of colors, fabric textures, sizes, thicknesses, and mounting options (wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted, or suspended)

This makes them easy to integrate into existing interior designs or branding schemes without drawing unwanted attention.

Acoustic Performance

Fabric-wrapped panels provide excellent absorption across mid and high frequencies, which are critical for controlling echo, excessive reverberation, and background noise. Thicker panels (2–4 inches or more) can also offer moderate low-frequency absorption, making them more acoustically effective than foam in many applications.

Their dense core allows them to outperform lightweight solutions, especially in speech-focused spaces, home theaters, meeting and presentation rooms, and open-plan offices.

Installation

Fabric-wrapped acoustic panels are typically installed using mounting brackets, impaling clips, or Z-clips to ensure a secure and flush fit. Due to their weight and size, careful placement and proper mounting are important for both safety and optimal acoustic performance.

Pros

Strong, reliable absorption across mid and high frequencies

More effective than foam for overall room treatment

Highly customizable for visual consistency

Clean, professional, and unobtrusive appearance

Greater durability and longevity than foam panels

Cons

Higher upfront cost compared to foam

Heavier and requires secure mounting

Performance depends on proper placement and spacing

Ideal Use Case

Fabric-wrapped acoustic panels are ideal when sound control, comfort, and visual harmony are all priorities. They are especially well-suited for professional environments and home theaters where performance and aesthetics must work together.

Bass Traps (Low-Frequency Panels)

Best for: Recording studios, home theaters, music production rooms

Bass traps are specialized acoustic panels designed specifically to absorb low-frequency sound energy, commonly referred to as bass.

Low frequencies are the most difficult sound waves to control because they are longer, more powerful, and tend to accumulate in room corners and along wall junctions. Standard acoustic panels often struggle to address these frequencies effectively, which is where bass traps become essential.

Acoustic Performance

Bass traps work by using thick, dense materials (such as mineral wool or fiberglass) to absorb low-frequency energy before it reflects back into the room. This results in tighter bass response, clearer mids, and more accurate overall sound.

Strategic placement is critical for bass traps to be effective. They are most commonly installed in vertical room corners, wall-to-ceiling junctions, and behind speakers or listening positions.

When combined with wall-mounted panels and ceiling clouds, bass traps help create a balanced and controlled acoustic environment, especially in smaller rooms where bass issues are more pronounced.

Installation

Bass traps are typically mounted in corners using brackets, corner straddling, or freestanding placement depending on the design. Due to their size and weight, proper positioning and secure mounting are important to achieve optimal performance and maintain a clean, professional appearance.

Pros

Essential for controlling bass buildup and resonance

Dramatically improves sound accuracy and clarity

Enhances the effectiveness of other acoustic panels

Crucial for mixing, mastering, and critical listening

Reduces listening fatigue over long sessions

Cons

Bulkier and thicker than standard acoustic panels

Requires careful placement for optimal results

Can be visually dominant if not integrated into the design

Ideal Use Case

Bass traps are absolutely necessary in any space dedicated to music production, recording, home theater, or critical listening. Without them, even the best speakers and panels cannot deliver accurate sound.

How to Choose the Right Type of Acoustic Panels

Now that you understand the basics of each acoustic panel type, the next step is choosing the right solution for your specific needs. The best results come from matching the panel type to your acoustic goals, room size, and overall design preferences rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.

Follow these steps to make an informed decision:

1. Define Your Purpose

Start by identifying what you want to improve acoustically:

Speech clarity: Offices, classrooms, and conference rooms benefit most from fabric-wrapped or PET panels, which reduce echo and improve intelligibility.

Music recording or mixing: Requires a combination of wall-mounted acoustic panels and bass traps to control both reflections and low-frequency buildup.

General noise reduction: Foam or PET panels are often sufficient for reducing echo and overall noise in casual or shared spaces.

Home theater immersion: Fabric-wrapped panels combined with bass traps provide balanced sound control and an immersive listening experience.

2. Consider Room Size and Shape

Room dimensions and layout have a significant impact on acoustic behavior:

Small rooms often suffer from bass buildup and uneven frequency response, making bass traps especially important.

Large rooms typically require thicker panels or a greater number of panels to achieve effective sound absorption.

Parallel walls increase echo and flutter, requiring reflection control at key points.

Irregularly shaped rooms tend to perform better acoustically, but they still benefit from targeted acoustic treatment.

3. Balance Aesthetics with Performance

Modern acoustic panels don’t have to look industrial or intrusive:

Wood slat panels provide a premium, architectural appearance.

Fabric-wrapped panels blend seamlessly into both residential and professional interiors.

PET panels offer modern color options and design flexibility.

Foam panels focus on function and affordability over visual appeal.

Choose panels that complement your space while still delivering the acoustic performance you need.

4. Set a Realistic Budget

Your budget will influence both the type of panels you choose and how much coverage you can install:

Foam panels: The most affordable, entry-level option.

PET panels: Mid-range pricing with durability and eco-friendly benefits.

Fabric-wrapped panels: Higher performance with extensive customization options.

Wood slat panels: Premium pricing paired with high-end aesthetics.

Bass traps: A critical investment for accurate sound, especially in music-focused spaces.

In many cases, the most effective solution is a hybrid approach, combining different panel types to maximize acoustic performance while staying within budget.

Acoustic Panel Comparison Table

Panel Type

Best For

Acoustic Strength

Aesthetic Appeal

Install. Difficulty

Cost Range

Wood Slat Panels

Living rooms, offices, restaurants, design-forward studios

Mid–high frequencies (can assist bass with backing)

Premium

Medium

$$$

Foam Panels

Home studios, podcasts, gaming rooms

High frequencies only

Functional

Easy

$

Fabric-Wrapped Panels

Offices, classrooms, home theaters

Mid–high (some low with thickness)

Professional

Medium

$$–$$$

PET Panels

Schools, offices, public spaces

Mid–high frequencies

Modern

Easy

$$

Bass Traps

Studios, home theaters, critical listening

Low frequencies (bass control)

Utility-focused

Medium

$$–$$$

Final Thoughts & Tips

Hopefully, this article has helped you better understand acoustic panels and find the right solution for your space. Remember, every room behaves differently, and effective sound treatment works best when performance, placement, and aesthetics are considered together.

To help you even further, here are some final tips to ensure the best results:

Think in systems, not single panels: The most effective acoustic setups combine multiple panel types. For example, wall-mounted panels control reflections, while bass traps manage low-frequency buildup. Together, they create a balanced sound environment.

Placement matters as much as the panel itself: Even high-quality panels won’t perform well if placed incorrectly. Focus first on reflection points and large bare surfaces before adding decorative or secondary treatments.

Thicker panels generally perform better: When possible, choose thicker panels, especially for larger rooms or music-focused spaces. Added depth improves absorption and broadens the frequency range they can control.

Balance acoustics with design: Modern acoustic solutions no longer require sacrificing aesthetics. Wood slat, fabric-wrapped, and PET panels allow you to improve sound quality while enhancing the visual appeal of your space.

Start small and expand if needed: You don’t need to treat an entire room at once. Begin with key problem areas, listen to the improvement, and add panels gradually as needed.

No one likes the idea of having to hear the high-pitched squeak of rusted door hinges every time you or someone else opens a door. Still worse is the prospect of that door literally rusting off its hinges and making the problem that much worse.

Basic metal joint and hinge maintenance is important, and that starts with making sure they are properly lubricated. That said, there’s a lot more to choosing the right joint lubricant for your door than simply finding one that can stop the squeaking.

Door Hinge Lubricants 101

Here’s what you should look for in the
best six door joint lubricants.

What is it? For those not in the know, lubricating oil is just what it sounds like, oil that can help your door’s hinges and similar connectors remain lubricated.

Why is this important? The less lubricated these joints are, the more corroded they become and the more friction they experience, with both of those conditions exacerbating one another. Squeaky door hinges are just a symptom of the greater problem, and they’re just the beginning.

When searching for lubricating oil for metal hinges, some of the most important factors to consider include:

Whether they are multipurpose (ie, eradicate rust and act as a preventative treatment)

The surface to which you are applying the oil

The method of application (ie, dabbing, spraying, etc.)

Whether or not the oils in question are eco-friendly

Low enough viscosity to effectively penetrate the surface in question

Good enough lubricity to smooth the metal’s movement

Top 6 Lubricating Oils for Door Hinges

1. WD-40 Specialist Multi Purpose Lubricant

Not all hot tubs are technically
“Jacuzzis,” but the brand association is so strong that we call them as such,
and the same is true here. WD-40 is by far the best-known and best-acclaimed
lubricating oil on the market, and has been for decades.

As the name would imply, this is a specialized variant of the best-selling lubricating oil legend. It comes in a spray can, a definite plus for those for whom storage considerations are a serious concern.

The spray itself is silicone-based and
works to lubricate as well as coat surfaces with a water-proof solution. It is
also resistant to dirt. What’s more, it dries fast, ensuring fast-acting
solutions without you having to wait around for it to dry or seep into the
metal.

One reason WD-40 has such a strong
reputation is the fact that it’s an all-purpose spray insofar as it not only
fights rust and improves lubricity, but can also be used on a variety of
surfaces. In addition to metal, it can be safely employed on rubber, plastic,
and vinyl. What’s more, it isn’t just or even primarily for use on door hinges,
but can be used to fight rust and improve performance on any number of
components.

Finally, WD-40 has a good reputation for
safety, which is hugely important. The last thing you want is for your attempts
to lubricate your door to instead make it an unintentional hazard. The spray
itself is essentially harmless as long as you use it safely and keep the room
in which it is being used well ventilated. It may not have the raw power some
other options on this list boast, but it is by far the most well-acclaimed and
versatile choice.

See on Amazon

2. Permatex White Lithium Grease

One of the strongest selling points for this lubricant is the fact that it can be used for metal as well as plastic surfaces, as well as surfaces which combine the two. This can be incredibly useful for situations where you have hinges or other components that are made of two or more materials. With a lubricant like Permatex, you don’t have to switch between different oils, you can use the same one to treat them together when applying them to door hinges.

What’s more, the lubricant itself is
tough, fast-acting, and can do a great job of dealing with not just rust, but
other environmental factors such as heat and moisture as well.

This is especially important given the
fact that incidents such as rust hardly ever happen in a vacuum. Factors such
as cold and moisture cause it, which means that any lubricant which is to serve
as a long-term solution will need to be capable of standing up to and
counteracting those conditions.

If there is any downside to this offering
from Permatex, it’s the fact that it is on the messier side so far as
lubricating oils are concerned. Where WD-40 offers a simple, no fuss no muss
application, this can cause a bit of a mess if you aren’t careful. As long as you
do take precautions, however, and know what you’re doing, it can be a very
effective rust-fighting lubricant.

You can drag out a litany of tropes regarding simplicity and effectiveness with CRC’s offering here, and they would all be accurate. The bottle itself is small and simple, betraying nothing of the rust-fighting power it contains. In fact, it is so powerful that it almost boomerangs around to become a concern, as it may be too powerful for use on smaller-scale projects. If you are looking for a simple lubricating oil to dab on your door hinges, this may pack more of a punch than you bargained for.

That said, this is an incredibly potent rust-fighting lubricating oil. It was designed with automotive work in mind, and it shows. It is incredibly adept at removing rust and improving lubricity when applied to the kinds of metallic and plastic surfaces commonly used in car parts. In addition, it can be quite effective when dealing with garages. As such, while this can be applied to door hinges, you’ll want to ensure it’s not “too much” for them.

Not only is this a potent lubricant, but it is also quite durable. Once you apply it, you can count on it lasting a good long time. It may be a bit messy when applied, but if you can deal with that, you’ll have an incredibly potent rust-fighting agent on your hands.

4. DuPont Teflon Lubricant

As stated, one of the most important factors to consider when reviewing different rust-fighting lubricating oils is their ability to withstand the elements. Fighting rust won’t do much good if it can just come back time after time.

DuPont’s offering here does a great job of standing up to the cold and moisture that can commonly cause rust as well as general corrosion. Just as importantly, it is able to stand up to high temperatures as well. Given how much we tend to associate rust with cold and moisture, that latter risk factor is often overlooked, to the detriment of hinges and metallic components everywhere.

This offering, thus, does a great job of
providing all-around protection against the elements, no matter what they may
be.

Another nice point about this lubricating oil is the fact that it’s relatively odor-free. Not only is that nice from a personal comfort and decorating standpoint, but it also means a reduced risk of fumes.

On the flip side, this is another
lubricating oil which can be messy to apply to metal surfaces.

If you are interested in a weatherproof
lubricating oil, however, this may well prove an effective choice for door
hinges that are caught between interior and exterior spaces, such as those for
your front door.

5. Prolong Super Penetrating Lubricant PSL40010

This option excels in breaking down rust.
It is also great for all manners of treatments for friction, especially on
metal surfaces. What’s more, not only does it do a good job of helping ease
that friction, but it can also take care of that annoying squeaking sound as
well. This option works especially well on hinges, nuts, joints, and similar
components.

One thing to be aware of is the fact that,
unlike WD-40 and some other options on this list, this option is not spray-on,
but rather comes with a traditional application stick. This would not be a
problem per se if not for the fact that the stick can sometimes have trouble
getting into tight metal spaces. If you intend to use it for light application
purposes on surfaces such as door hinges, however, this is nevertheless a solid
new option to explore.

6. CRC Lithium Grease Spray

Most of the lubricating oils on our list have fallen into one of two usage camps. Either they have been “weak” enough to be used in a variety of manners on many different surfaces, or they are so “strong” as to be too potent for certain surfaces. This offering from CRC does a great job of straddling those two extremes, being strong enough to be effective on most metal surfaces without being so strong as to pose a long-term risk.

That isn’t to say that this option isn’t
without its specialized uses as well. In addition to generalized use, it is
best used for lubricating bearings.

In addition, this is yet another
lubricating oil that does a good job of being weatherproof. That said, it is
worth noting that this spray dries much faster than other options on this list.
On the one hand, some may find that beneficial and convenient, as it means you
don’t have to wait around forever for the spray to dry. On the other hand,
however, it may dry too fast for some, and once it dries, its effectiveness may
plateau or begin to diminish.

As with so many things, however, it’s good
while it lasts, and can provide a good deal of lubricity with minimal viscosity
when applied to door hinges suffering from too much friction.

See on Amazon

When and How to Lubricate Door Hinges

As stated above, left untreated, these kinds of door issues can result in the friction becoming so bad as to make it hard to impossible to operate the joint, and the corrosion can get bad enough to cause the door to literally fall off its hinges.

That’s due to a buildup of rust, which is why one of the main things these types of lubricants accomplish is dissolving and otherwise removing rust from the surface in question. It does not do this by “just” cleaning rust away from the hinges in question but, in many cases, actively attacking and dissolving rust.

The best lubricating oils don’t stop there. The makers behind these oils understand that prevention is the best policy when it comes to solving a squeaky rusty door problem. As such, not only do they eradicate rust, but they coat the metal with a solution that helps prevent rusty buildup in the future.

Having read the above, two questions which
are bound to come to mind is whether weatherproof lubricating oils are really
necessary for “interior” hinges, and how to best apply the lubricating oil.

While weatherproofing naturally won’t matter for joints that are entirely interior, any that are borderline — such as those for doors and windows — can always benefit from it. Moreover, a key aspect of weatherproofing is the ability to combat moisture, which is always beneficial for hinges, joints, and other components, whether they are interior or exterior.

As for application, that will depend on personal preference and what you’re trying to achieve. Applying it with a stick can be more direct than a spray, but harder to manage. Sprays can cover a broad area effectively, but certain sprays are less targeted when it comes to spraying small, highly specific places.

Final Thought

All in all, you’ll want to review the
nature of your door hinge, determine the size of the area that needs to be
treated, and get a lubricating oil with a good deal of lubricity that fits your
criteria.

Although many people become friends with their neighbors, friendship can sometimes be tricky to maintain if they’re being obnoxiously loud. However, it’s not always easy to know how much noise is too much because loudness can be subjective. So, what is classed as unreasonable noise from neighbors?

Any sound that’s loud enough to disrupt your day or sleep pattern is classed as unreasonable noise from neighbors. You should confront your neighbor if you find yourself staying awake during the night due to excessively loud noises (whether it’s people, music, or animals).

Many things are classed as unreasonable noise from neighbors, and this article will discuss them in detail. Read on if you want to learn more.

How to Know if a Neighbor Is Being Unreasonably Loud

There aren’t many things worse than noisy neighbors, especially if you have young children or work in the morning. If you’re unsure whether you’re being over-dramatic, there are some signs to look out for that will indicate if the noise is unreasonable.

Below are some of the leading indicators that a neighbor is being unreasonably loud.

The Shouting Disrupts Your Day or Sleep

If your neighbors are shouting so loudly that you lose track of your thoughts or can’t sleep, they’re being unreasonably loud. You should be able to go about your day without dealing with abnormally loud shouting and screaming, so you’re perfectly justified in being annoyed about this.

It might even be worse at night because most people must get up early for work the next day. If the shouting disrupts your sleep, you should speak to your neighbors about it as soon as possible because it may get worse if you leave it be.

The level of shouting may vary. In some cases, the neighbors might be shouting so loud that you can hear them way down the street. In other cases, they might yell at much lower levels so that you can only hear faint noises. If the shouting is so faint that it doesn’t bother you, you might be able to ignore it.

So basically, noise from neighbors becomes a problem if it gets in the way of you being able to sleep or do other activities.

Their Dog Barks for Hours on End

Another noise that is classed as unreasonable is dog barking. Although it’s technically not your neighbors making the noise, their pet is 一 so they are responsible.

You need to be careful when confronting neighbors about barking if it only lasts a few minutes. In that case, it wouldn’t be considered unreasonable noise, so contacting your neighbor wouldn’t be appropriate. It would only be considered unreasonable if the dog barks for long periods or at night when everyone is sleeping.

So you shouldn’t complain as soon as you notice barking. Instead, wait to see if it stops after a few minutes. If the noise occurs daily (or nightly) and isn’t stopping, it’s best to reason it out with your neighbor to solve the problem amicably.

Loud, continuous barking could also be a sign of neglect. If you think your neighbor is neglecting their dog or that it’s in grave danger, it’s always best to call local law enforcement. Doing so could stop the noise and prevent the dog from danger.

They Blare Music That Disrupts Your Day or Sleep

It is considered unreasonable noise if your neighbors blare music too often.

Of course, playing music for a short period shouldn’t be a big issue. But if they’re playing music for extended periods (mainly if it’s so loud that it could damage people’s hearing), you could speak with them to solve the problem.

The worst time a neighbor can blare music is at night because that’s when you need silence to sleep peacefully. It is unreasonable noise if your neighbor is blaring music into the early morning hours (and you can hear it clearly in your home).

It might also be unreasonable for neighbors to blare loud music during the day, although there are generally no rules or laws against it. For example, if your neighbor plays music over loudspeakers every day for hours, it is unreasonable but not necessarily illegal.

Loud music is even more of a nuisance if you work from home and can’t concentrate because you can hear noise from your neighbors. Trying to deal with meetings and phone calls while house music is playing in the background isn’t ideal, never mind professional.

The best way to deal with such a situation is to politely remind your neighbors that you (and possibly others in the area) work from home and that the music is highly disruptive. Hopefully, they’ll respect your suggestion and will play their music more quietly in the future.

The Noise Is Extremely Loud and Continuous

Any noise from neighbors that is extremely loud and continuous is unreasonable. Although loud noise during the day is generally not something you can call the cops over, you can take that step if the noise is so loud that it’s damaging your hearing and won’t stop.

Again, some circumstances are excusable.

For instance, let’s say the neighbors are making some noise during the day because they’re having guests over for a barbeque. In that case, it wouldn’t be unreasonable, and you’d likely need to tolerate the noise. It would only become unreasonable if they continued to be loud late into the night or if the noise became so loud that it was dangerous for your hearing.

If it’s nighttime and you can’t sleep because there is thunderous, continuous noise coming from next door, you should talk with your neighbors and ask them to be quieter. If you feel threatened or that it wouldn’t be safe to talk to your neighbors alone (for example, if you suspect they are very drunk), you may want to call the police.

They Mow the Lawn at Unreasonable Times

Another thing considered unreasonable is mowing the lawn at unreasonable times. Generally, it’s socially acceptable to mow the lawn from around 8 or 9 am until 7 or 8 pm.

Mowing outside these time frames would be unfair for neighbors, particularly those with young kids who sleep at around 7 or 8 pm.

If your neighbor seems to mow their lawn at unreasonable times (for example, 11 pm), you should speak with them cordially. It’s essential to be polite when doing this because you may find out that your neighbor does shift work and has no other time to mow their lawn. In that instance, maybe you can come to an agreement.

Are Loud Parties Classed as Unreasonable Noise?

Loud parties are classed as unreasonable noise if they continue into the night and disrupt neighbors’ sleep patterns. If your neighbor has a loud party that doesn’t seem to be dying down anytime soon, it might be a good idea to knock on their door or call the police.

Loud parties during the day are generally not unreasonable because most people don’t need to sleep during the day, so they’re not as disruptive. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t complain to your neighbor if they’re playing inappropriate party music during the day while young children in the neighborhood can hear it.

When it comes to loud parties at night, it’s important to remember that they will often have alcohol and possibly drugs involved. As such, it might not always be safe to complain by yourself.

If you can’t sleep because of a neighbor’s wild party during the night, you should go with others to complain or call for help (such as the local authorities). Going by yourself might be dangerous.

What to Do if a Neighbor Is Being Too Loud

Now that you know more about what noises from neighbors are classed as unreasonable, you might want to know more about what you can do. There are different approaches you can take to deal with noisy neighbors.

The ideal approach you take will depend on:

How loud they’re being

Whether or not you’ve already confronted them

The source of the noise (pets, people, music)

Your city rules and laws

In almost all instances, you should speak directly with your neighbor first. You may be able to come to a solution and save both of you a lot of time and hassle. The only time you shouldn’t speak directly with your neighbor is if the situation might be dangerous.

Here are a few pointers on dealing with a noisy neighbor:

Be Civil

When approaching your neighbor, you must remain civil no matter how annoyed you may be. Being aggressive or angry will likely make things worse, and it could even result in your neighbors being more disruptive.

Most people appreciate being spoken to politely and are more likely to cooperate if you’re respectful, so explain your frustrations calmly and offer a helpful solution.

Don’t Be Afraid to Escalate the Situation

If your neighbor doesn’t listen to your suggestions and complaints, it might be time to escalate the matter to the authorities.

You shouldn’t escalate the situation directly with the neighbor because things can get ugly quickly.

Plus, you may have to live next to this person for many years. You certainly don’t want there to be too much bad blood.

What to Do if a Noisy Neighbor Won’t Listen to Complaints

Unfortunately, speaking cordially with your neighbor won’t always work. If you’ve been civil and offered a decent solution to your noisy neighbor to no avail, you should take the matter further. No one should have to deal with disruptive behavior, especially if it occurs at night when you need sleep.

Here’s what to do when diplomacy fails:

Speak With Other Neighbors

The first thing you should consider doing (after complaining to your neighbor directly) is speaking with other neighbors in the area. You might realize that others have also been having trouble with the noise.

If that’s the case, you and a few neighbors could talk to the noisy person together, which might be more effective than speaking to them alone. If that still doesn’t work, it’s best to involve the police.

Consider the Laws in Your State

There are different laws in different cities regarding loud neighbors and noises, so you should become aware of the laws in your region. For example, it’s considered unlawful for neighbors to make a purposeful loud, continuous noise in Portland, Oregon.

Many cities have similar rules, but some aren’t as strict. Always be aware of your city’s laws before trying to take legal action.

Can You Sue a Neighbor for Unreasonable Noise?

You can sue a neighbor for unreasonable noise if there is nothing more you can do to solve the problem. However, you can’t sue them if you haven’t even tried to speak with them. In many instances, talking cordially with your neighbor can be highly beneficial.

But be aware that taking legal action could be expensive and time-consuming. For many people, it’s not worth it.

And depending on the laws in your area, you might not get the judge to rule in your favor. Different local governments within the US have distinct regulations, so it’s essential to check the laws that relate to your region rather than the laws that relate to the entire country (which would be federal law).

If your neighbor is being loud, but it’s not illegal according to your city’s laws, you likely won’t have a strong case.

Conclusion

Noisy neighbors can disrupt your life and routine, so it’s essential to deal with these issues when they arise. However, some noises are more acceptable than others, so you should know which ones are considered unreasonable.

To recap, these are some examples of unreasonable noise from neighbors:

The noise significantly disrupts your activities or sleep pattern

Your neighbors are blaring music at night

There is loud, continuous barking

Always be civil when speaking with your neighbor about the noise. If they don’t listen to your complaints, you should talk with other neighbors or call the authorities.

Is your fridge making pounding or banging sounds? Before you call a professional, it will help to do some investigating first.

A refrigerator makes a knocking noise when it’s in close contact with a surface, or is an older model with a loud compressor. A clogged condenser fan, evaporator fan, and dirty coils can also cause unpleasant thumping noises. Solutions include repositioning the fridge and cleaning its compressor.

Here, I’ll explore why these things happen – and what you can do about them.

1. Close Contact With Surface

Your fridge will have some vibrating or rattling motions as it operates. They happen when:

The refrigerant flows

The waterline of the unit operates

There are items on top of the fridge

So if your fridge is placed near a surface, say a wall, then you’ll likely hear a knocking sound.

How to Fix

Troubleshooting this issue is simple. It would be best if you moved your fridge a few inches away from the wall or the counters. That way, when it vibrates, it won’t make a thumping noise.

You may need to remove the items on top of it as well. While they make sounds that aren’t indicative of damage, they can be concerning at times.

For best results, give your fridge a space of at least 31 in2. Not only will this prevent knocking noises, but it will provide your refrigerator with much-needed ventilation space as well.

Without ventilation, your compressor will end up running continuously. That’s because there is warm air buildup in the area – resulting from lack of ventilation, of course.

Needless to say, a continuously running compressor will severely affect the lifespan of your fridge. Apart from creating knocking noises, your fridge may end up breaking down earlier than expected.

See also: How Much Weight Can You Put on Top of a Refrigerator?

2. Old Fridge Compressor Either Starting or Stopping

Your fridge’s compressor is the pump that controls refrigerant circulation. It also heats the refrigerant by exerting pressure.

The compressor removes the vapor from the evaporator. This helps keep the substance at a lower temperature and pressure before it’s funneled to the condenser.

Because of these functions, thumping sounds often occur in older models – less so in newer ones. If you continue to hear sounds with your latest model, you may have to try the interventions below.

How to Fix

In most instances, you only need to clean your compressor to stop it from knocking. To do this, you need to:

Unplug your fridge. You don’t want to get electrocuted.

Move your fridge to an open area. It’s hard to clean it well if it’s near the wall. As mentioned, this may be contributing to the knocking noise as well.

Remove the compressor shields. Do note that not all models have this!

Clean the coils to remove the dirt. You can use a duster or vacuum cleaner if the buildup is not that severe. For tougher dirt, use soap and a damp cloth. Only scrub the compressor if necessary. Make sure that you don’t get the other parts wet!

Air-dry the coils. Reinstall the shields as needed.

Ideally, you should clean the compressor for about 30 minutes once or twice a year. If not, it might end up needing repair – or worse, replacement. As for these concerns, it’s best to have a professional fix them for you.

3. Other Compressor Issues

Apart from a dirty compressor, other related issues may cause your fridge to knock.

For one, the cooling substance inside the compressor is quite sensitive. That said, it could end up making noises when moved around. Another possible reason for the noise is that the compressor components have come loose.

How to Fix

You will need to do some detective work to determine the actual cause behind the banging sound:

Listen to where the sound is coming from. Open the fridge door to check if the sound comes from the inside or the outside.

If it’s from inside, remove the evaporator fan. It may be broken or stuck. Either way, the technician will have to replace it.

If it’s from the outside, check the bottom of the fridge. Make sure that it’s leveled when you do so.

Move the fridge back into place. The compressor will turn back on once you do this. If it’s a leveling problem, you shouldn’t hear a thumping sound anymore.

Locate the compressor if the knocking noise doesn’t stop. Look for the cooling fan to see if there are loose parts or some stuck debris.

Do the necessary interventions. Secure the fan if it’s loose and replace it if it’s damaged. Tighten the compressor bolts as needed.

4. Condenser Fan Clogged With Debris

While the compressor is often to blame, the condenser fan can also make some scary sounds. This often happens when the fan is jammed with lint, debris, and other material. They limit the airflow, which results in the fan making a knocking, clicking, or whistling noise.

How to Fix

To fix these noises, you will need to clean the clogged fan. As with the compressor, you need to unplug your fridge first. Next, you need to remove the back panel if your fridge has one.

Clean the fan with a soft brush until you remove all of the dirt. Spin it a few times to loosen anything that may be stuck inside. Lastly, return the panel into position and turn your fridge on again. By this time, it shouldn’t be making weird knocking noises anymore.

5. Condenser Coil Covered in Dirt and Debris

The condenser coils are the black items you see at the back or bottom of the fridge. They’re usually placed near the compressor.

In due time, these devices can get covered with dirt. Such things reduce its cooling function, which then leads to knocking noises.

How to Fix

As with the other fridge parts stated above, cleaning the condenser coil should help stop the thumping noise.

First, you need to locate where the condenser coils are. Refer to your user manual if you’re unsure of their placement.

If they’re located at the bottom, you may need to remove the panel that covers them. Clean the dirty coils with a soft brush. You may also use your vacuum cleaner for a more comprehensive clean.

6. Damaged Evaporator Fan

Your fridge has several fans, one of which is for the evaporator. The evaporator fan’s function is to circulate the cold air in your fridge. So if it isn’t getting as cold as it should, then this part may be jammed or bent.

Expectedly, a damaged fan can make further knocking sounds if it’s hitting another component of your fridge.

How to Fix

It would be best if you started by defrosting your fridge. This will melt the ice that affects the fan’s movement.

If this doesn’t stop the noise, then you should clean the fan manually. Remove the fridge’s panel to access the fan and clean it off with a soft brush. Try to spin the fan manually a couple of times as well. This should help remove some of the stuck debris.

If your evaporator fan is bent, don’t try to reshape it. Your fridge will continue to make banging noises because this will make the fan unbalanced. For this problem, you will need to call a technician to make a replacement.

Final Thoughts

Typically, a fridge shouldn’t make knocking noises. But when it does, it’s often due to placement. Other causes include compressor issues, clogged condenser and evaporator fans, and a dirty condenser coil. While you can troubleshoot these problems yourself, it’s best to seek professional help for replacements and repairs.

Our homes should be a place to relax and recover from a long day that’s been or to prepare for one that’s still coming. However, having upstairs neighbors that annoy you with their stomping sounds takes all hopes for peaceful, quiet time.

Here’s how you can deal with your upstairs neighbor stomping:

Talk to your neighbor directly

Agree on silent hours with your neighbor

Ask your landlord to mediate

Soundproof your bedroom and work area

Wear headphones when in need of quiet hours

Find a new apartment

If you need a little more specific information on dealing with your neighbors’ stomping sounds, the rest of the article will elaborate on how to go about your attempts for each of the possible solutions.

1. Talk to Your Neighbor Directly

Nothing beats putting an end to your suffering by telling your neighbor about your issue directly, preventing further misunderstanding, and can even help build trust between the two parties.

How exactly you’d go about this would depend on your personality and how much you know your neighbor’s schedule, as you’ll have to choose a time to talk to them.

If you feel comfortable confronting them while they’re in the middle of doing the act, then you can just wait for them to make the same annoying habit and let their stomping noises be your signal to go upstairs and talk to them.

You may want to consider, though, that choosing this timing could be awkward. Your neighbors could be dancing their hearts out on their makeshift dance floor, and you’d be the bummer who turns the happy mood around. Whatever they’re doing, stopping them right in the middle could be a sensitive situation.

However, if you’re the type who can go about this type of situation smoothly, then by all means. After all, besides timing, it’s the delivery of the message that leaves a huge impact.

Alternatively, if you know their schedule, precisely what time they’re around even without the stomping noises telling you, then you can talk to them during that time instead.

Choosing this timing could be less humiliating for them and also less awkward for you. However, it would be a good idea to record the stomping noises while you’re in your apartment so they could listen to the recording and find out for themselves.

It would be best to calm down first before talking to them. If you go upstairs annoyed, the conversation may not turn out the way you intend to, and the outcome could be worse.

Prepare for possible scenarios, too, such as if they deny that they’re causing the noise or get furious about you “intruding” in how they live their lives. You may not get things your way by preparing appropriate responses, but at least you’ll less likely be caught off guard. This way, you can keep acting classy, and they won’t have anything on you.

2. Agree on Silent Hours With Your Neighbor

Talking to your neighbor every time you hear them make stomping noises can cause so much stress and cost you your precious time. Not to mention the anxiety it brings if you happen to be an introvert and are uncomfortable with confrontation.

If your neighbor can’t promise to be quiet all the time, you can at least agree on silent hours. Discuss both of your schedules and work around the times you’re both allowed to enjoy each of your apartment units.

They may tell you that they cannot move some of their activities to another time. If this is the case, discuss with them how they can do it more quietly.

They need to understand that your needs are also essential and that their daily activities may be preventing you from making the most out of your apartment.

Perhaps they only have the wee hours of the morning to exercise. Suggest that they do it in a place not directly above your bedroom to lessen the noise you hear. They could also sound search for noise dampening mechanisms to prevent stomping noises from waking you up earlier than your alarm clock.

Remember to talk to them gently and see them as your equal. Avoid any condescending remarks and gestures, and keep your tone calm.

Show them that you’re also committed to tweaking your day-to-day activities to be a better neighbor. The more they see you as sincere, the more likely it’ll be that they’ll stick to your agreement.

3. Ask Your Landlord to Mediate

When things still don’t go your way despite negotiations and offers to compromise, then the next best thing would be to ask your landlord to mediate.

You can both go over your contract and pinpoint specific sections that your neighbor violates, and the landlord can then rightfully remind them of their responsibilities.

Similar to the first two suggestions, though, keep your composure when talking to your landlord. You wouldn’t want to get on their bad side and have them siding on your neighbor instead.

Describe to your landlord what exactly you hear, around what time it happens, and what disruptions this causes to your daily life.

While you’re at it, you can also tell your landlord your non-negotiables, e.g., if the stomping noises don’t stop, then you’ll have to terminate the contract as the place is no longer livable.

Letting your landlord know the extent of the problem and how far you’ll go if it doesn’t get solved might prompt them to work on your issue more quickly.

4. Soundproof Your Bedroom and Work Area

Another idea would be to soundproof your bedroom and work area. The massive downside of doing this, though, is that it could get costly.

Hiring a soundproofing company could cost you up to $4000, depending on the size of the room. You can ask your landlord to shoulder the cost too, but given that this could already amount to a month’s rent, there may be a slim chance they’d agree to it.

There are some cheap soundproofing materials and techniques that you can utilize instead. However, don’t expect them to eliminate all of the noise.

Another thing to consider is the time it takes to get the job done. It’s estimated that it may take up to a week to soundproof a 80 square-foot ceiling. This is a huge problem if you work from home and need the space or prefer being around to check the progress but couldn’t take a leave from work.

5. Wear Headphones When in Need of Silent Hours

If you’re not ready to pay for soundproofing, then perhaps you can just buy a pair of noise-canceling headphones and wear them while working or when you’re in dire need of quiet hours. The only catch, though, is that it may be uncomfortable to wear them while sleeping.

If you’re the type who prefers earbuds over headphones, you can check out the Bose QuietComfort Noise Cancelling Earbuds (available on Amazon). It already comes with high-fidelity audio, a long battery life, and resistance to sweat and water. Its sweat resistance makes it dual purpose, as you can also use them whenever you go out for a run or hit the gym. However, wearing earbuds while sleeping can be bad for your ears, so don’t wear them through the night.

On the other hand, if you prefer headphones instead, then these Sony WH-1000XM4 Noise Canceling Overhead Headphones could suit your needs well. It comes with a 30-hour battery life, cutting-edge noise-canceling technology, and the ability to connect to two devices at once.

Unlike Bose’s earbuds, though, it’s not sweat-resistant per se, so if you’re planning to use it in the gym, then you may be better off with other product types.

Noise-canceling earmuffs and sleep masks are your other options. They block a decent amount of noise but are softer and more comfortable than headphones.

6. Find a New Apartment

Finally, your last resort could be to find a new apartment. If the stomping noises are causing significant disruption on your day, then at some point, it may be worth it just to start again somewhere new.

However, a few things to consider would be the flexibility of your lease agreement and the likelihood of finding a strategic place close to work or school.

Moreover, assuming your landlord allows you to terminate the lease agreement right then and there, an abrupt move could still incur problems, such as a limited time to weigh your options.

Lastly, moving out will cost you a substantial amount of time and money. Looking for apartments is a job in itself, but packing is a whole new task. Sure, you may just hire someone else to do it.

Key Takeaways on Dealing With Your Neighbors’ Stomping

The best first step when dealing with your upstairs neighbor’s stomping noises would be to talk to them directly and negotiate on silent hours.

However, if this doesn’t work out, it may be necessary to go back to the building rules and lease contract and ask your landlord to mediate.

Should this still fail, you can opt for other alternatives such as soundproofing your room or settling with a pair of earbuds or headphones when you need some peace. You can also revenge your noisy neighbors if you think that would help.

When all else fails, you may be left with no choice and just move out.

Laptops are a great way to stay connected. Whether it’s work, friends, or family, they’re a convenient way to stay in touch on the go. But sometimes laptops make strange noises, and many wonder what causes them.

When a laptop fan is making a buzzing noise, it’s likely because the fan is working to cool the device down, or has dust buildup. A laptop has a built-in fan designed to keep it cool, but when it overheats, the fan will overwork and buzz loudly. Too much dust on the fan can also cause buzzing.

Keep reading for a closer look at what causes your laptop to buzz and what you can do to fix it.

What Causes Your Laptop to Make Buzzing Noise?

Your laptop is making a buzzing noise due to an overworked fan or excessive dust buildup. It’s very easy for dirt to get into the fan of your laptop with just regular use. Dust is the number one culprit of loud laptop fans. However, sometimes your laptop fan is simply overworked.

Whether it’s constant use or keeping it in a warm place, many factors having to do with temperature can cause your laptop to buzz loudly, trying to keep itself cool.

Dust Has Accumulated in the Fan

This can happen naturally over time. Dust and dirt will accumulate in the fan just like it does elsewhere in your home. We’ll talk about how to properly clean your fan later, but for now let’s focus on how it gets there and how to prevent it.

The chances are that you probably keep your laptop pretty clean, but even the cleanest laptops can gather dirt.

Over the years, we’ve all sat down to our laptops with a snack. Depending on where your fan is located on your device, this can lead to crumbs getting in there. This is just one example of how fans can get dirty.

Think about kids or pets, which tend to all bring a mess wherever they go. Many different things can cause dirt to accumulate in your laptop fan, but dirt isn’t the only concern.

Dust is a natural occurrence in any home. Every week or so, we’re dusting off our surfaces to bring back their shine. Well, laptop fans are no different. They collect dust as well. Sure, they can be cleaned out, but let’s discuss preventing that from happening first.

How Do You Prevent Dust in Your Laptop Fan?

The best way to prevent dust and dirt from accumulating in the fan is to put your laptop away. If it didn’t come with a case or a sleeve, then buy one. Leaving it out on your desk when you aren’t using it can allow those particles to gather there. In a sleeve, that’s far less likely to happen.

Preventing dust and dirt from accumulating in the fan can keep your laptop from running loudly and making that obnoxious buzzing sound when you use it.

Heat Causes the Fan to Overwork

Laptops run their fan to prevent overheating. When the temperature gets too high, the fan will keep running until it has cooled down enough. Sometimes a loud fan is an overworked fan.

Not only is the internal temperature of the laptop important, but the external temperature matters too. You’ll notice your fan working harder depending on your environment. Sure, taking the laptop to the beach sounds like a great way to relax while working, but it’ll cause the fan to work much harder to keep your device from overheating.

You may not be able to change how often you are on your laptop, especially when you have a demanding job. But just remember that even technology needs a break sometimes to cool down and work better. Sure, you may need to be on your laptop as much as possible, but unplugging is good for your laptop and your mental health.

How to Fix Your Buzzing Laptop Fan: 6 Simple Tips

To fix a buzzing laptop fan, you should clean the fan thoroughly to remove any dirt and dust buildup. You should also avoid overworking the laptop, shut it down, and store it away after use.

Overuse and overheating problems can be more complicated, but completely turning off your laptop and being aware of every program running in the background can be a good way to get it to stop. Remember, an overworked laptop is often a loud one.

1. Getting Rid of Dust and Dirt

If you want to get the dust out of your laptop fan, try blowing compressed air into the vent. You can also blow into it yourself, but be ready for some dust or dirt to come your way.

If possible, remove the fan cover so you can access it better to clean it. Make sure you aren’t using any products that can leave behind residue, as this can cause your fan to stop working.

Fans don’t need to be thoroughly cleaned with harsh chemicals or anything similar. It’s best to just clean with air or a dry paper towel. If you have a duster that can reach into the crevices of the fan, that would be fine too. However, you must make sure your laptop is turned off completely before doing any of this.

If the fan is left to run, even if it isn’t running at the moment, whatever you’re cleaning it with can get stuck in it if it turns on. So, make sure your laptop is completely off to prevent any issues with cleaning the fan.

2. Helping With Overuse

Overuse may be a more complicated problem to fix. We can’t just stop using our laptops, especially when we rely on them for work or communication. One great way of quieting your laptop is to watch how many programs are running in the background. There can be multiple programs and applications running in the background that you aren’t currently using.

Some of these extra programs use quite a bit of memory by continuously running or tracking your location. Location services can be helpful, but those programs often track your location even when you aren’t actively using them.

Applications that are running in the background continuously are an easy fix. Use control + alt + delete (for Windows Operating System) or command + option + esc (for Mac Operating System) to bring up your task manager and see what is actively running. It should also tell you how much memory each specific program is using.

By opening the task manager, you can see which programs are taking up unnecessary power and may be causing your laptop to overheat more often.

Many laptops also have applications and programs that open on startup. This is common with everything from PCs to Macs. Check out what opens automatically in your task manager, and see what programs you’re using or may just be popping up in the background going unnoticed.

Quit any programs that you aren’t currently using to keep your laptop from unnecessarily running programs.

Remember that once you are done with your laptop for the day, it’s vital to shut it down completely. This will allow it to rest and make sure no programs run overnight.

Leaving your laptop active may be a quick way to access it whenever needed, but it’s not good to keep it constantly running. Give it time to shut down and cool off when you aren’t using it.

3. Shut Down Your Laptop When Finished

Shutting down your laptop regularly will also allow it to update properly. Lingering updates will not always happen while you’re using your laptop. They often wait until overnight when you’re no longer using it. This is great for keeping you going throughout the day, but if you don’t shut down your laptop, it’ll be forced to ignore updates until you do.

So, make sure you’re regularly shutting down your laptop and allowing updates to happen when you need them.

4. Keep an Eye Out for Malware

Another potential fix for loud fan noises is clearing any malware. Malware can cause your laptop to run even more than necessary. There may be programs running in the background that you may not know about. Not only is this bad for your laptop, but it can cause it to run even more.

To combat this, make sure you’re running anti-virus software on your laptop. This will keep any malware away, ensure your laptop remains safe, and help prevent malware from running in the background.

5. Give Your Fan Some Space

Finally, your fan may just need room to work properly. Sometimes, laptops design their fans to be on the side so that hot air can be released without much in the way.

However, that’s not always the case. Sometimes fans are placed on the bottom of your laptop, meaning that the hot air isn’t able to escape as well.

Make sure you’re using your laptop on a proper surface like a desk or counter, which will allow the heat to escape better. Also, if you notice the fan getting loud, you can temporarily lift your laptop off of the surface to give it a chance to clear out the hot air.

6. Try a Laptop Cooling Pad

If your laptop is still overheating, there’s still hope. Laptop cooling pads are a great option to help your fan work a little less by cooling your laptop down along with your fan. A cooling pad has extra fans built into it.

So, you don’t have to worry about your fan overworking, as it’ll take away some of the work by cooling down your entire device. They’re not very expensive either. So, if all else fails, try a Havit cooling pad from Amazon to keep your laptop fan from overworking.

Is It Better to Get Your Buzzing Fan Replaced Or Replace Your Laptop?

For newer laptops, it’s best to replace the fan rather than replace the entire laptop. It’s much cheaper to buy and install a new fan instead of buying a new laptop. Even if you need a professional to install it, it’s worth it to replace the fan instead.

Having your laptop fan replaced by a professional will most likely cost you around $200. When compared to the cost of a brand new laptop, it’s obvious which is the better deal. A new fan can keep your laptop from overheating and get it back to the quiet machine you once knew.

If you’re looking to have a professional handle it, then set aside some money to get it done. However, it can also be a fun DIY project as long as you do enough research. Laptop fans aren’t too expensive, and with the right information, you could be well on your way to having a new fan for less than half the price.

There are plenty of helpful resources online if you want to try them yourself. Here’s a tutorial video to replace your laptop cooling fan :

Here is another helpful article with a video from HP, going through some necessary tools to get started. Though it isn’t necessary to replace the fan yourself, it’s certainly the cheapest way to ensure your laptop fan is quiet and doing its job.

Replacing your laptop should be a last resort, but it may be helpful with older laptops. Sometimes continuous updates and overuse may age your laptop and make it louder than normal. If you have the money, it may be worth investing in a brand new laptop to replace yours altogether.

Sometimes the fan can be replaced, and that fixes the problem. Other times, it may be more about how your laptop runs than the actual fan. So, try to fix the fan if you want, but there’s no shame in buying a new laptop.

Final Thoughts

Laptop buzzing sounds can be annoying, but they are also indicative of an issue that needs addressing. Your fan may be quieter after a good cleaning or once it stops working so hard. So, clean out your fan and check to see how many programs are running in the background.

Taking care of these issues and following our advice can help you get your laptop running normally and quietly in no time.

You can choose the perfect pair of sandals to complete your fantastic summer outfit and still end up in a mood due to one of the most annoying sandal tragedies – suction noise, aka farting sounds. The noise typically comes out every time you move. The good news is there are actually plenty of ways to prevent your sandals from making suction noise.

The rest of the article will explain why these methods work and the appropriate situations to use either of the steps. Keep reading to make sure you get rid of that suction noise.

1. Spray Antiperspirant

Sandals set your feet free and allow you to enjoy the hot summer days without the constraints of your go-to rubber shoes or sneakers. It’s almost literally like your feet can breathe. Unfortunately, though, the summer heat isn’t just out to bring you some fun – it too gives you sweaty feet, and that’s when the tragedy begins.

Before I blame everything on the hot summer sun, let me clarify that even going for long walks still leads to sweaty feet, so it really is on a case-to-case basis. The more you sweat, the more suction noise your sandals may produce, and evidently, the more annoying it’s going to be.

In either case, sweaty feet almost always lead to farting sounds when walking on your favorite pair of sandals. What happens is air trapped in the holes of your footwear gets sealed in by the moisture seeping out of your feet.

Now, that wouldn’t be a problem if you just stay put. There are going to be no suction sounds bothering you or the rest of your friends.

However, once you start to lift your heels and make your attempt at walking, the air previously trapped within the holes of your footwear gets released.

It’s therefore not surprising that the number one on the list is spraying antiperspirant on your feet. Keeping your feet dry is the key to avoiding those unwanted farting noises.

An antiperspirant also adds a layer of safety, as it prevents your sandals from becoming slippery.

Just make sure that the antiperspirant doesn’t release harmful chemicals that eventually damage the insoles or maybe even the skin on your feet during constant contact. You can check Odorex Foot Antiperspirant (available on Amazon), which is supposed to give you protection from heavy perspiration.

2. Apply Talcum Powder

If you don’t have an antiperspirant, you can instead apply talcum powder on your feet as well as the sandal insole. The idea is quite similar to the logic behind the antiperspirant, which is to prevent air from being trapped in-between spaces and catch attention once released.

The exact way it solves the problem though is a little different. While antiperspirant sprays prevent you from sweating excessively, talcum powder just absorbs the sweat that you produce.

This means it’s crucial for you to bring your favorite baby powder brand whenever you plan on staying under the sun for too long, or if you really just have sweaty feet and you already sweated out the baby powder you previously applied.

Your feet may look like it has been coated in sugar powder for a while but at least no more of those embarrassing farting sounds.

With a talcum powder, your footwear may also feel more comfortable to walk around on, as besides the suction sound, sweaty feet also leave a slippery feel when wearing most types of sandals.

Word of caution, though, if your feet are really sweaty–antiperspirant sprays may still be the way to go. Putting too much talcum powder on your feet may leave annoying white traces from excess and poorly attached powder particles on the ground. You wouldn’t want to get rid of the annoying noise only to end up looking weird walking around with powder tracing your path.

3. Spray Waterproofing Solution

After the first two items on the list, the third item comes as an evident alternative. You may not be comfortable with antiperspirants and powders come with their own set of issues, so another option would be to use a product that will instead be applied on your sandals, not on you.

A waterproofing solution prevents moisture from getting into the holes of your sandals, trapping air, and ending up releasing the loud suction noise during the cyclical application and removal of pressure on your soles.

Another great motivation to use a waterproofing solution would be that when it suddenly rains or when your sandals get wet unexpectedly, the chemical protects your sandals from damage.

Just like other types of moisture, water seeping into your sandal may lead to the suction noise, and even worse, ruin the material of your footwear way before you’re even able to wear them comfortably.

4. Poke Holes in the Insole

Sweaty feet aren’t the only ones to blame for squeaky sandals. Trapped air in the insole and cushion of your sandals can also be to blame for those squeaky noises.

Whenever you apply pressure on your sandals, the trapped air underneath the insole and the pores of the midsole try to escape through any hole on the footwear. The loud squeaking sound happens when the trapped air is forced to exit through a few tiny holes.

Knowing this, you can poke small holes on the insole of your sandal to let the trapped air escape more easily. Remember that air is composed of gas molecules that spread out easily. Minimizing the resistance that keeps the air from going out can be an effective way to get rid of the suction noise.

Some sandal manufacturers already incorporate these holes in the design so you wouldn’t have to ruin your sandals too much. At times, though, you’ll have to do it by yourself.

You can use a pin or a sharp knife to poke holes through the insole. The target locations of the holes should be the area under your heels and the ball of your foot as these are the locations where there’s the most pressure. Be careful and be sure not to damage the sandals when poking the holes.

5. Apply Petroleum Jelly On the Insole

Surprisingly, the suction sound in your sandals isn’t always due to trapped air. Another crucial factor to consider could be the friction buildup between your feet and the sandal’s insoles. When the friction is too high, your feet will start to produce suction noise whenever it rubs into the insoles. In this case, lubricants may be the way to go.

To prevent friction, a smooth contact between your feet and the inside of your sandal must be maintained. One way to do this is by applying a tiny amount of petroleum jelly on the insole just enough to create a thin layer of lubricant. A product that’s been around since the 1800s, Vaseline Petroleum Jelly is a classic choice.

Just be careful not to overapply, you wouldn’t want this trip to end up being a choice between squeaky and sticky.

Another thing to consider would be that lubricants easily attract dust. When going for an outdoor activity with your sandals, you may want to be more cautious of the dirt that’s attached to your feet because of the jelly.

6. Apply WD-40 on Squeaky Areas

If, for some reason, you ran out of petroleum jelly in your house. You can always look in the garage to check if you still have your WD-40.

WD-40 is an industrial lubricant used to lubricate almost anything you can think of. From loud door joints and now your squeaky sandals, this industrial lubricant is guaranteed to stop all those annoying noises.

Just spray a small amount onto a cloth and apply on the outside seams or any other squeaky areas and you’re good to go. However, always remember to use this method only for synthetic or PVC sandals as these are more resistant to the substances found in WD-40.

For leather fabrics that need lubrication, just stick with your old-school petroleum jelly.

7. Break in Your New Pair of Sandals

A pair of sandal’s age can also be a good risk factor for the suction noise. You may think this could be because the sandals are old, and that could be true, but even new sandals pose problems.

In particular, sandals with comfy cushions that ensure you don’t hurt your feet when you walk long distances also make for noisy footwear. Cushions provide tiny air pockets that need prolonged and constant application of pressure to compress.

To get rid of these air pockets, after buying your new pair of sandals, use them around the house until the suction noises are gone. Constant compression releases trapped air and prepares your sandals to be noise-free when it’s time to use them outdoors.

8. Fix Damaged Layer/s

Suction noise can sometimes get tricky. We get so used to thinking suction noise is just produced between the skins of our feet and our sandals’ insoles, but after doing all that we can, our footwear still keeps on making the annoying sound.

This time, the problem could be that your pair of sandals is going through the natural wear and tear process, and the surfaces of contact between the layers of your sandals are the ones making the noise.

Sweat may not anymore trap the air bubbles in your insoles but release them once in a while through a resounding farting noise. However, the spaces in between your inner sole and midsole or your midsole and outer sole invite air to come in. They trap them when you exert pressure as you walk and release them the very moment you raise your heels.

It’s almost the same annoying sweat story, except for the fact that you wouldn’t have to apply the fix as often as if it were a perspiration problem.

Gorilla Glue will typically do the magic. Just make sure to get rid of trapped dirt within the layers so that the exposed surfaces are smooth and are expected to adhere completely with each other.

If dirt is still present when you attach the sandal layers, you end up leaving air pockets that’ll once again connive with water and other sources of moisture to get the annoying suction noise you’ve been trying to avoid.

9. Get Rid of Smooth Outsoles

When your sandals go through wear and tear, it doesn’t only break in between the layers. Due to constant friction, the outsoles may eventually smoothen, exposing you to danger while walking down the slippery streets.

Now, this overly smooth sole doesn’t only put you at risk for accidents but also for the farting sound produced when the smooth surface rubs on concrete.

To get rid of smooth outsoles, you can use a fine-grained sandpaper to gently rub through the surface of your soles until the friction between them and the ground is back to normal.

10. Dry Your Sandals

Finally, you’ll have to remember to make sure that your sandals have completely dried before using them again. There’s almost no better recipe for suction sounds than trapped air and water present in all of the sole layers.

You can simply leave your sandals to dry under the heat of the sun and get back to them by nighttime. It should be ready for use the next morning.

Key Takeaways

When dealing with annoying suction noise on your sandals, you must check for at least five main causes:

The sandals are new and you need to break them in.

The sandals are old and they need repair.

The sweat coming from your feet traps air within your sandals, and the air is released when you lift your feet and relieve the pressure.

Friction between your feet and your sandals needs to be minimized.

Friction between your feed and your sandals need to be increased.

Identifying which of the five most common reasons for the suction noise leads you to your solution.

Your noisy neighbors are ruining your quality of life, so you want to get back at them. You’ve spoken to the offenders, written to them, and complained to the proper authorities about the problem, all to no avail. After three strikes, they’re out of chances, and you want revenge.

Before choosing to retaliate against your noisy neighbor, consider that, instead of fixing the problem, revenge may anger the noise-maker as well as other neighbors.

This article will take an in-depth look at ways to get back at your neighbor and, hopefully, avoid becoming the neighborhood outcast.

1. Take Your Neighbor to Small Claims Court

You can sue your noisy neighbor for money damages in small claims court, and it’s relatively easy. The procedures for filing with small claims courts can vary from state to state, so check with your local court for this information.

You will be required to ask the court for an exact amount in monetary damages, and while small claims judges can award you less money than you request, they cannot give you more. That is where the problem lies.

In many noise cases, it is difficult to prove actual monetary damage. If you spent money to soundproof your home, that is an expense you could claim. To better understand what damages are recoverable from a noisy neighbor in an area’s small claims court, consult a local lawyer.

2. Do Noisy Chores Early in the Morning

Try to figure out when your neighbor is home and enjoying some quiet time. Then schedule your noisiest chores for maximum disturbance.

Loud indoor chores for apartments and townhouses would include using the washer and dryer, moving furniture, and vacuuming.

I have never had a powerful vacuum that wasn’t a little noisy. So you don’t need a special one for noise. I suggest a machine that works on surfaces in every room in order to clean wherever it will aggravate the neighbor.

My favorite is the Oreck XL Commercial Vacuum Cleaner. It will beautifully clean your carpets, wood, laminate, and tile flooring, flatten to reach under your bed, and if you time it right, annoy your neighbor.

If you have a yard, mow the lawn or use a weed eater or leaf blower to rattle your neighbor’s quiet time. Any lawnmower you happen to have will do; however, an older gas-powered number is probably the loudest one that you can find.

When using a weed wacker, you’ll want to get as close to their property line as possible. The cordless, rather than wired, type of weed eater should make this easy as pie. Some leaf blowers offer a grinding function that will up the noise level.

3. Encourage Your Kids to Be Noisy

Let your kids give your neighbor a taste of his own medicine. Imagine the aggravation a dance party with loud music or an indoor wrestling match can cause in an apartment or townhouse. A raucous game of dodgeball or soccer can shatter the quiet outdoors.

Your child should be practicing their musical instrument every day to improve their skillset. Make sure they play in an area that ensures your neighbor gets the full serenade experience.

A band practicing in your home, garage, or yard might even drive a neighbor to surrender from the noise war. You can be the supportive parent who allows their kid’s band to practice at your home. If you don’t have children, you could invite a local kids’ band to practice at your home (I bet their parents would be thrilled).

Not enough noise yet? Think about the entire high school marching band and invite them over to practice in your front yard.

4. Let Your Dog Make Noise

Even quiet dogs can be encouraged to make noise. My dog rarely barks, but I have two great toys that the little terrier loves making noise with.

The Wobble Wag Giggle Ball emits a high-pitched giggle when shaken or rolled. My dog loves pushing and tossing and shaking this toy for endless hours of fun indoors or out, and she can get loud while doing it.

Most dogs, including mine, love treat balls. This type of toy slowly releases treats as your dog pushes it around, banging loudly into walls and furniture. Ruby wags her tail furiously as I fill the ball with her cookies. When I give it to her, she will keep playing even after the treats are gone, hoping some food will appear. The more frantic she becomes, the harder she pushes the toy, and the louder it bangs.

If your dog will bark on command, have it bark anytime your neighbor gets too loud.

5. Practice an Instrument

Playing a musical instrument is very rewarding, even more so when you know it will annoy your noisy neighbor. If you don’t play but have always wanted to, what could be a better time to start?

Didgeridoo produces a loud, reverberating sound that is very unusual. Your neighbors can’t help but hear the noise and wonder if they’ve been transported to the Australian Outback.

Have you always wanted to rock the world with your guitar playing? Stop wasting time. Start now! Practicing with the amp turned up to the max can help you realize your dream and piss off your neighbor.

Why not form a band, especially if you can draft some other neighbors that are sick and tired of the noise-maker?

6. Play Loud Music or Sound Effects

With a good set of speakers, you can blast loud music or sound effects toward your neighbor’s home. You can place speakers high on the wall to annoy upstairs neighbors, on the floor for downstairs, and facing the wall for those next door. A weather-proof wireless speaker is great for annoying the house next door.

Is there a particular kind of music that your neighbor plays loudly? Blast the opposite kind right back at them, only louder. If they like rock, you can play country. If they enjoy gospel music, you can boom rap.

When their loud sex wakes you in the middle of the night, turn up the volume and play some sound effects that will turn off that loving feeling. I think fart sounds, which can be found online, will kill the mood pretty quickly.

For loud arguments, I suggest playing a bit from a laugh track in response to every screamed remark. You could play some roaring laughter right after your neighbor screams, “I never loved you!” You can currently buy some very annoying old laugh tracks available to download or on CD for shaming a shrieker. It might also work on people having loud sex.

7. Play Basketball

Dribbling a basketball and throwing the ball against the hoop’s backboard can provide endless hours of noise outside. Don’t worry about your skillset. The worse you are, the more practice it will take, and each time the ball misses the hoop and crashes against the backboard, you’re adding to an environment of annoying sounds.

Just imagine your neighbor’s displeasure when you invite friends over to enjoy a noisy game of hoops. Make sure to cheer for each other.

8. Exercise Loudly

Forget quiet and meditative exercise when you are seeking revenge on your obnoxious neighbor. Do it loud and earth-shaking.

Many years ago, my upstairs neighbor drove me crazy doing step aerobics late at night. The whole apartment seemed to shake. Jumping jacks and running in place are also excellent choices.

Be sure to enhance your ceiling-shaking exercises with loud music for the complete revenge sensation. Late night or early morning moves over a noisy downstairs neighbor can help you get fit and get even at the same time.

9. Have a Loud Party

You can host a loud party and invite all your other neighbors. Indoors or out, your unrepentant loud neighbor can’t help but see or hear everyone else at your over-the-top noisy party.

Turn up the music full blast and dance. Maybe you can host a karaoke or air guitar contest with the winner decided by applause level. In a good-sized yard, party-goers can play baseball, soccer, or volleyball. If you want to get back at downstairs neighbors, you can tell your guests to wear loud heels.

For the kids, you can rent a bounce house or an inflatable waterslide to enjoy outside. Inside, they can play Stomp the Balloon. Every child has a balloon tied to each ankle for this game, and they run around trying to stomp each other’s balloons. The last kid left with an unpopped balloon wins. The game is hilarious and noisy.

Just keep in mind, even if the purpose of this party is revenge, the most important thing is to have a good time.

10. Bang on the Ceiling, Wall, or Floor

Banging on the ceiling, wall, or floor is a tried and true method of letting your apartment or townhouse neighbor know they are too loud. People have probably been doing this since apartments and townhouses existed.

Most people time this strategically to annoy their neighbors at the height of their noise indiscretion. You can use a broom handle, a mop handle, or even a rubber mallet.

An invention called the NOISE Strike Back on Amazon by Yunshangwange replaces the tools mentioned above for banging on the ceiling and the floor. This ceiling thumper retaliates with noise and vibrations against either your upstairs or downstairs neighbors.

11. Stink It Up

Next time your neighbor has a noisy outdoor party, you can create a stink that will drive their guests away.

If you have a dog poop can, place the can next to the offending neighbor’s property with the lid removed for a real stench. If you don’t have a dog, clean up your neighborhood by picking up unclaimed dog poop. Then you can place it in a can for later use. The old open-dog-poop-can trick is very effective in hot weather.

Plantskydd Animal Repellent is a great gardening accessory that will create a massively foul odor for your neighbor’s next party. This product prevents herbivores, such as deer and rabbits, from damaging your garden, and I have had great success with it for years.

The only drawback is that it stinks to high heavens for the first 24 hours. Fortunately, you only have to spray it every two months to protect your garden, but you can use the repellent more often without harm.

Spray this product on your property near the area where your neighbor is hosting their yard party. The smell from Plantskydd is sure to make their guests leave early, but it won’t make them sick.

This animal repellent doesn’t even harm the birds and bees. It only frightens herbivores because it contains animal blood and smells like a predator made a kill in the area. The deer and rabbits can smell it long after the scent fades from the human nose. So Plantskydd is a great nontoxic product for the garden and revenge.

Noise complaints can be a nag for all parties involved, especially if you’re the one supposedly causing the ruckus. Whether it’s tired neighbors or your landlord filing the complaint, don’t worry; there are ways on how you can defend yourself.

Here are a few ways to defend yourself against noise complaints:

Warn your neighbors ahead of time

Check for quiet hours

Ask your landlord or the police for a warning

Determine the validity of the complaint

Apologize if you are in the wrong

Know your rights

In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about dealing with noise complaints, including how to speak with your neighbor and what to do if the police are called.

Ways to Defend Yourself Against Noise Complaints

A noise complaint is a complaint formerly made from an outside source referring to excessive or distributive noise. The complaint could be made to the police, or if renting property, to a landlord.

Excessive noise repercussions may be written into state or local law or a lease, depending on where you live. Some noise complaints result in verbal warnings, while others may result in a fine or further consequence, depending on the severity and the frequency of the complaint.

Noise complaints are usually made at night, often against parties or playing loud music. A complaint can be made if noise is considered distributive to others and avoidable, such as music or screaming.

If the complaint refers to something like loud footsteps or normal activities such as in an apartment building, a complaint may not be valid. There are multiple guidelines to be followed regarding making noise and filing noise complaints depending on where you live.

Prevention and responsibility are the best ways to defend yourself against noise complaints.

Here are a few ways you can prevent complaints in the first place and what you can do after getting the complaints.

1. Warn Your Neighbors Ahead of Time

If you have a party or a get-together planned and you know it may get out of hand, warn your neighbors ahead of time! Not only is this the polite thing to do, but it can also prevent an initial complaint in the first place.

If your neighbors know you are taking the initiative to warn them of possible noise, they will form a stronger connection with you and be less likely to file a formal complaint.

Forming relationships with those around you can ensure more likeability and mutual respect, making neighbors reconsider their choice before picking up the phone.

You should also give your neighbor your phone number or a way to contact you so they can warn you ahead of time if the noise is getting too loud. Keeping communication about excessive noise between one another can eliminate the possibility of legal repercussions if the complaint is taken to a landlord or law enforcement.

2. Check for Quiet Hours

A lot of towns or private living complexes enforce quiet hours. Quiet hours are rules determining when you cannot make excessive noise and should make an effort to be quiet out of respect to neighbors and those who live close by.

Quiet hours usually take place between late night and early morning, when most people are trying to sleep. If the noise is above a certain decibel level during this time, it may be considered in violation of quiet hours.

Violating quiet hours may result in legal or landlord-enforced repercussions such as fines or eviction.

If you are planning something that may cause louder noise than usual, check for your local town or building quiet hours. Many towns may include this information under a Nuisance Order.

If you live in a rented or leased building, the information should be in your lease.

Try to plan your event around these hours or make an effort to lower the volume of your event once quiet hours begin.

If you have already received the noise complaint, check if quiet hours were violated. If you violated the rules, you might have to suffer the consequences.

However, if no quiet hours were enforced, you have a bit of defense for your case.

3. Ask Your Landlord or the Police for a Warning

If this is your first noise violation, you will often be let off with a warning. If it is not given to you directly by your landlord or a police officer, you can politely ask for a warning for your first violation before receiving consequences.

Allowing a warning is not mandatory, so you should not keep fighting for one if you are not given one.

In line with asking for a formal warning, you can ask your neighbors for a warning as well. If you communicate with them, as stated above, you can ask if they warn you of excessive noise before they file a formal complaint.

This again comes down to common courtesy and respect between you and those who live near you.

4. Determine the Validity of the Complaint

Sometimes, a noise complaint is made over something that is invalid or cannot be controlled.

Below are some examples of valid vs. invalid noise complaints:

Valid Complaint

Loud music

Partying

Barking dogs

Screaming or excessively loud talking

Invalid Complaint

Footsteps

Running water

Get-together that is over by predetermined quiet hours

If a complaint is made against you that is not valid, you can try to appeal to your landlord or police officer by providing details about the noise complaint and letting them determine if it is against the rules or not.

Often, neighbors can just be grumpy or tired when they file a complaint, and often police officers and landlords have more important things to attend to besides irrelevant noise complaints.

5. Apologize if You Are in the Wrong

If the deed was done and you are in the wrong, the only thing you can do to defend yourself is apologize and take whatever consequences are given to you. In the grand scheme of things, noise complaints are annoying, but they are not too severe and usually do not affect your personal record.

Apologize to your neighbors, the landlord, or the police officers and promise to be more respectful of other people’s spaces and personal lives. Sometimes if you’re very lucky, a sincere apology may even earn your way out of any consequences.

6. Know Your Rights

If the police or the landlord of your building come to your door for a filed noise complaint, it is important to know your rights regarding yourself and your property. I’ll share what you should do if the police, your landlord, or neighbor, show up below.

If Police Show Up

If the police show up at your door for a noise complaint, they are not allowed to enter your house uninvited without a search warrant.

Police are only allowed to stand at your door unless you give permission otherwise.

If they show up with a search warrant, you must let them in the house. If the police try to enter your home without a warrant or permission from you, they are breaking the law.

If the Landlord Shows Up

Since you are technically renting from the landlord, they may be able to enter your home from a noise complaint in many places.

Your landlord is obligated to investigate any noise complaints and gain details of the occurrence. The landlord’s and tenant’s rights in this situation may differ based on location and lease details.

If a Neighbor Shows Up

If your neighbor shows up at your door complaining about noise, you do not have to let them in, nor are you obligated to answer the door.

Your neighbor only has free access to their own rented unit.

However, if you do not answer the door, you may face repercussions of hostility and disrespect from neighbors in the future.

Tips to Keeping the Volume Down

If you have already received a noise complaint or are nervous about creating excessive noise, there are many ways you can take precautions to ensure you’re a respectful tenant or neighbor.

Keep the volume of your TV or music low. If you can hear it clearly from another room of your house, chances are your neighbors can hear it through the wall. You can also opt for headphones at night to reduce noise.

Warn guests of quiet hours ahead of time. Letting your guests know when it is time to quiet down can help reduce noise and avoid complaints. It is sometimes hard to get people to quiet down at the moment, especially while intoxicated or under the influence of something, but letting them know in advance could help them register its importance.

Have large gatherings earlier in the day. Try to plan to have your get-together end by the time quiet hours begin. People will be less likely to file noise complaints if their peace and quiet are not being disturbed.

Have the party somewhere else. Sometimes our walls are just too thin or our floorboards too squeaky. If this is the case, see if a friend or family member can co-host an event or let you hold it at their house instead, where there are fewer neighbors nearby.

Conclusion

In this article, I discussed the many ways to defend yourself against noise complaints and how to take precautions against them in the first place.

I also discussed your rights as an individual regarding noise complaints and the proper way to handle them. Hopefully, you can now reduce the number of noise complaints made against you or eliminate them in the future.
