Storing a mattress isn’t always as simple as sliding it into a corner. When space is limited, stacking mattresses may seem like an easy and practical way to keep things organized.

However, mattresses are large, flexible, and sensitive to prolonged pressure, which makes proper storage more important than it might initially seem. The way you store them can affect their shape, support, and overall lifespan.

In this article, you’ll learn what to consider before stacking mattresses and how to store them safely. Stacking can work in some situations, but the best approach depends on storage time, mattress type, and where they’re being kept.

How Mattresses Handle Weight During Storage

Mattresses are built to support weight evenly when someone is lying on them, not to hold concentrated pressure for weeks or months at a time. When you stack mattresses, the bottom mattress bears the full weight of everything placed above it, which can stress materials that are not designed for prolonged compression.

Over time, this constant pressure can compress foam layers, weaken internal springs, or cause padding and support materials to shift out of place. Firmer mattresses may tolerate stacking slightly better than soft foam or pillow-top designs, but even they are not immune to long-term compression or structural wear.

Storage Time Matters More Than Position

One of the biggest factors in mattress storage is duration rather than positioning alone.

Stacking mattresses for a few days or even a few weeks is usually not a problem, as most materials can recover once the pressure is removed. Issues tend to appear when mattresses remain stacked for months at a time. Prolonged stacking increases the risk of permanent sagging, reduced support, and uneven comfort.

If you’re planning to store a mattress for an extended period, minimizing constant pressure and ensuring adequate airflow becomes far more important than saving a small amount of floor space.

The Role of Airflow and Environment

Mattresses need consistent air circulation to stay dry and free from moisture-related damage. When they are stacked tightly together, airflow between them is significantly reduced, especially if the stack is placed directly on the floor. In environments with higher humidity, this lack of ventilation can allow moisture to build up inside the mattress materials over time.

Basements, garages, and storage units without climate control are particularly risky. Even mattresses stored in protective covers can trap moisture if airflow is poor, increasing the likelihood of mold or mildew growth, lingering odors, and gradual material deterioration.

Mattress Type Makes a Difference

Not all mattresses respond the same way to being stacked during storage. How well a mattress tolerates it depends largely on the materials and internal construction.

Foam and memory foam mattresses are generally more vulnerable to compression damage. Prolonged pressure can cause foam layers to lose their ability to fully rebound, leading to permanent indentations or reduced support.

Innerspring and hybrid mattresses may hold their shape slightly better due to their internal coil systems. However, they can still suffer from uneven wear, bent coils, or padding shifts if stacked for long periods.

Latex mattresses are known for their durability, but they also benefit from proper ventilation and limited pressure during storage. Without airflow, even latex can trap moisture and develop odors.

Tip: When storing more than one mattress, stacking mattresses of similar size and firmness helps distribute weight more evenly and reduces the risk of distortion or long-term damage.

When Stacking Mattresses Can Make Sense

Stacking mattresses can be a practical option in short-term situations, such as during a move, temporary storage between leases, or while completing home renovations. In these cases, stacking helps save space and keep mattresses out of the way without causing immediate damage.

To reduce risk, it’s important you:

Use breathable storage covers to allow airflow

Keep mattresses off the floor to prevent moisture buildup

Limit the stack height to reduce pressure damage

Place firmer or heavier mattresses on the bottom

The key is to treat stacking as a temporary solution and avoid relying on it for long-term storage.

It’s also worth noting that storage considerations are different from sleeping arrangements. If you’re thinking about using stacked mattresses for sleep rather than storage, our article on whether it’s safe to sleep on stacked mattresses goes into more detail.

Smarter Ways to Protect Mattresses in Storage

So, what are better ways to store your mattress? For longer storage periods, separating mattresses or storing them flat individually is often the safest approach. This reduces constant pressure on materials and allows for better airflow around each mattress.

Standing mattresses on their side can also work for short-term storage, provided they are properly supported and not bent or leaning unevenly.

Choosing a clean, dry, climate-controlled storage space is equally important. Checking on stored mattresses occasionally and allowing them to air out can help prevent moisture buildup, odors, and long-term damage, ensuring the mattress remains in good condition when it’s needed again.

In Summary

Stacking mattresses for storage isn’t automatically a bad idea, but it does come with trade-offs. Short-term stacking in a controlled environment is usually fine, while long-term stacking increases the risk of damage and moisture problems.

If preserving the comfort and lifespan of your mattress matters, minimizing pressure, maintaining airflow, and limiting storage time are the most important factors to keep in mind.

Stacking mattresses might seem like a quick fix that offers extra height, more cushioning, or a temporary sleeping solution when furniture is limited. It’s common in dorms, guest rooms, kids’ sleepovers, and even minimalist setups. But is it actually safe to sleep on stacked mattresses?

The short answer: sometimes, but there are important risks and limitations you should know about.

Why People Stack Mattresses

To understand whether sleeping on stacked mattresses is safe, it helps to first look at why people choose this setup in the first place. In most cases, stacking mattresses is a practical, space-saving solution meant for comfort or convenience rather than a permanent sleeping arrangement.

To create extra height without a bed frame: Stacking mattresses can raise a sleeping surface off the floor, which may feel more comfortable or accessible, especially in rooms where a bed frame isn’t available or desired.

To make a firm mattress feel softer: Adding a second mattress (often a softer one) can provide extra cushioning and pressure relief for sleepers who find their primary mattress too firm.

For temporary sleeping arrangements: Stacked mattresses are commonly used for short-term situations such as moving, renovations, dorm living, or camping indoors when a traditional bed isn’t practical.

To accommodate guests or children: During sleepovers or when hosting overnight guests, stacking mattresses can be an easy way to create additional sleeping space without investing in extra furniture.

For floor-sleeping or minimalist living: Some people prefer minimalist or floor-based sleeping setups. Stacked mattresses can offer a balance between sleeping directly on the floor and using a full bed frame.

While stacking mattresses may appear harmless and convenient, the safety and comfort of this setup depend largely on how the mattresses are stacked, the surface underneath, and who is using them — all of which we explain later in this article.

Potential Safety Risks

Even with the practical benefits, convenience doesn’t always equal safety. Sleeping on stacked mattresses can introduce several potential risks that are important to understand before using this setup, particularly related to stability, support, airflow, and hygiene.

Instability and Sliding

Mattresses are not designed to lock together or remain stable when stacked. When placed on top of one another — especially on smooth or hard flooring — they can shift, slide, or separate during the night.

This instability increases the risk of falling off the stack, sudden movement while sleeping, or injury when getting in and out of bed.

Softer foam mattresses and uneven stacking tend to make this problem worse, as they compress more easily and offer less structural stability.

Poor Support and Spinal Alignment

Each mattress responds differently to body weight and pressure. When mattresses are stacked, the top mattress may sag unpredictably while the lower mattress compresses unevenly beneath it.

This can cause the body to sink in unnatural ways, leading to poor spinal alignment. Over time, improper support can result in back, neck, or joint pain, particularly for adults, heavier sleepers, or those who already experience physical discomfort. (Source)

Overheating

Stacked mattresses significantly reduce airflow, especially when they are placed directly on the floor. Limited air circulation can trap body heat, increase sweating, and create an uncomfortable sleeping environment.

Foam mattresses are especially prone to heat retention, which can make stacked setups feel excessively warm and disrupt sleep quality.

Moisture and Mold Growth

Lack of ventilation can also allow moisture to build up between mattresses or underneath the stack. Over time, this trapped moisture may lead to mold or mildew growth, unpleasant odors, and gradual mattress deterioration.

This risk is even higher in humid climates, poorly ventilated rooms, or basement sleeping areas, and it increases significantly when mattresses are stored in a stacked position for long periods of time.

Hygiene & Dust Accumulation

In addition to moisture issues, stacked mattresses can trap dust, allergens, and debris between layers. Without regular cleaning and airing out, this buildup may affect air quality and overall sleep hygiene over time.

That said, stacked mattresses aren’t automatically unsafe in every situation, particularly when they’re used thoughtfully.

When Stacked Mattresses Can Be Okay

Stacked mattresses can be reasonably safe in certain situations, as long as a few important conditions are met:

The setup is temporary, not long-term: Stacked mattresses work best as a short-term solution, such as for guests, travel, or transitional living arrangements, rather than as an everyday sleeping setup.

Mattresses are stacked evenly and flat: Both mattresses should lie completely flat and align properly to reduce uneven pressure, sagging, or shifting during sleep.

The stack is placed on a non-slip surface: Using a rug, mat, or textured flooring underneath the mattresses can help prevent sliding and improve overall stability.

The sleeper is an adult or a supervised child: Adults and older children are better able to adjust their position and avoid falls, making this setup safer for them than for very young sleepers.

The mattresses are similar in size and firmness: Matching mattresses are less likely to slide or compress unevenly, providing more consistent support and reducing movement. The larger mattress should always be placed on the bottom, never on top of a smaller one.

For short-term use, such as hosting a guest for a few nights, this setup is generally fine when proper care and attention are taken. However, all of these conditions should be met for stacked mattresses to remain a reasonably safe option.

Who Should Not Sleep on Stacked Mattresses

Despite being acceptable in limited situations, stacked mattresses are not suitable for everyone. Infants and toddlers should never sleep on stacked mattresses due to the increased risk of suffocation and falls. Elderly individuals may also face higher risks, as instability and added height can make getting in and out of bed more dangerous.

Additionally, people with chronic back, neck, or joint issues are likely to experience discomfort or worsening pain due to the lack of consistent support and proper spinal alignment. For these groups, a stable, supportive bed setup is a much safer and healthier option.

Safer Alternatives to Stacking Mattresses

Those who need greater stability and long-term comfort can choose from several safer alternatives that provide the same benefits without the added risks.

Mattress Topper Instead of a Second Mattress

A high-quality mattress topper can soften a firm mattress or add extra cushioning without compromising stability. Toppers are designed to work with your existing mattress, providing pressure relief while maintaining proper support. They are also easier to remove, store, clean, and replace than an additional mattress.

For example, this mattress topper from BDEUS features a memory foam layer and a fitted cover with a total height of five inches, offering noticeable elevation. Its deep-pocket design helps keep the topper securely in place, reducing the risk of slipping or shifting during sleep.

Folding Bed or Rollaway Bed for Guests

Folding beds and rollaway beds are designed specifically for temporary use and offer a stable, self-contained sleeping surface. They often include built-in support systems that are far safer than stacking mattresses. When not in use, they can be easily stored away to save space.

For more ideas, check out our article on the best temporary beds. It covers a variety of options suitable for guests and other short-term sleeping needs.

Tatami Mat or Bunkie Board for Floor Setups

Tatami mats and bunkie boards provide firm, structured support for floor sleeping while allowing better airflow beneath the mattress. This helps reduce heat retention and moisture buildup. They also protect the mattress from direct contact with the floor, improving hygiene and durability.

Bed Frame or Platform for Elevation

A proper bed frame or platform raises the mattress off the floor while providing stable, even support. This helps maintain correct spinal alignment and reduces the likelihood of sagging over time. Elevating the mattress also improves airflow, which can help prevent moisture buildup and extend the life of the mattress.

As you can see, these alternatives offer similar benefits while providing better support, ventilation, and overall stability, making them far safer and more comfortable options than putting mattresses on top of each other.

Final Verdict: Is It Safe?

Sleeping on stacked mattresses can be safe in the short term, but it’s not ideal for regular or long-term use. The main concerns are stability, health issues, heat retention, and moisture buildup.

When stacking mattresses, the setup should be stable, well-ventilated, and used only as a temporary arrangement. For everyday sleep, investing in a properly supported mattress setup is always the safer — and more comfortable — choice.

Anyone left with an extra mattress they no longer need can explore options for proper storage, even in small spaces, or learn how to dispose of it responsibly through our related guides.

No air pump? No problem. Inflating an air mattress without one is easier than you think, and chances are you already have everything you need. From plastic bags to hair dryers, there are several clever ways to get the job done using common household items.

This guide covers six simple and effective methods to blow up an air mattress when you’re in a pinch — at home, outdoors, or anywhere in between. Let’s get your mattress full and ready for sleep, no pump required.

1. Use a Plastic Bag

Blowing up an air mattress with a plastic bag might sound strange at first, but it’s actually a simple and surprisingly effective method. It’s especially handy when you’re camping or anywhere without electricity or tools.

Here’s how to do it:

Find a large plastic bag. The bigger the bag, the more air it can hold, making the job faster. A standard trash bag works great. Smaller bags will still work, but you’ll need to repeat the process more often.

Attach the bag to the mattress valve. Hold or tape the bag opening tightly around the air mattress valve to prevent air from escaping.

Fill the bag with air and squeeze it in. Trap air inside the bag by swinging or puffing it up, then press the bag to push the air into the mattress. Repeat this step as many times as needed until the mattress is inflated to your liking.

Seal the valve. Once the mattress is full, quickly seal the valve to keep the air inside.

If you’re a visual learner, here’s a helpful video demo of this method:

2. Use a Hair Dryer

A hair dryer can be a quick and easy tool to inflate your air mattress — as long as it has a “cool” setting. This method is ideal if you’re indoors or somewhere with access to electricity.

Important: Never use hot air. It can melt the valve, damage the mattress, or even cause it to burst.

Here’s how to safely inflate your air mattress with a hair dryer:

Lay the mattress flat. Place the air mattress on the floor in an open space and make sure it’s fully unfolded.

Plug in the hair dryer. Position it near the mattress valve and ensure you can comfortably reach it.

Set the dryer to the cool setting. Remove any nozzle attachments to allow better airflow.

Hold the dryer against the valve. Aim the airflow directly into the valve. You may need to hold the dryer at an angle or create a seal with your hand for better airflow.

Turn it on and let it inflate. The mattress should begin to rise. Continue until it reaches your desired firmness.

Seal the valve. Once full, quickly close the valve to lock in the air.

This method might not be as fast as a pump, but it’s surprisingly effective in a hurry!

3. Use a Leaf Blower

Got a leaf blower lying around? You can use it to inflate your air mattress in seconds. Whether it’s electric or gas-powered, most leaf blowers are powerful enough to get the job done quickly.

Note: This method can be a bit loud and overpowered for smaller mattresses, so use with care!

Here’s how to do it:

Lay the mattress flat. Make sure it’s spread out on the floor with enough room to expand fully.

Position the leaf blower. Place the nozzle directly over or into the mattress valve. You may need to hold it tightly or wrap duct tape around it to prevent air from escaping.

Turn on the blower. Power it up and let it blast air into the mattress. You’ll see it inflate almost immediately.

Turn it off and seal the valve. As soon as the mattress is inflated, switch off the blower and close the valve quickly to avoid losing air.

This is one of the fastest methods — perfect when you’re in a rush or just don’t feel like pumping by hand.

4. Use a Vacuum (With a Blower Function)

While vacuums are best known for sucking things up, many models (at least shop vacs) have a blower mode — and that feature can come in handy for inflating an air mattress.

Before starting, make sure your vacuum has a blower function. You can check the user manual or look online for your model’s specs. If it does, you’re good to go!

Here’s how to inflate your air mattress using a vacuum:

Set up the vacuum for blowing. Some vacuums require you to move the hose from the “suction” port to the “exhaust” port. Others may have a dedicated blower attachment.

Lay the mattress flat. Give it plenty of space to expand fully and unfold it completely.

Attach the hose to the valve. Hold the vacuum nozzle securely against the mattress valve. You can wrap a towel or rubber band around the connection to help prevent air leakage.

Turn on the vacuum. The air should start flowing into the mattress. It might take a little longer than a leaf blower but will still be faster than doing it manually.

Seal the valve. Once the mattress is fully inflated, turn off the vacuum and seal the valve quickly to trap the air.

This method works especially well for shop vacs or multifunctional vacuums with powerful airflow.

5. Use a Bike Pump

If you have a bike pump at home, it can double as an air mattress inflator. While it might take a bit more effort than an electric option, it’s a reliable and straightforward solution, especially for camping or emergencies.

Tip: You may need an adapter to fit the pump nozzle into the air mattress valve snugly. If you don’t have one, try creating a seal with tape, a rubber band, or even your hand.

Here’s how to use a bike pump to inflate your mattress:

Lay the mattress out flat. Make sure it’s fully unfolded and on a clean surface with enough space to expand.

Attach an adapter (if needed). Some air mattress valves don’t match standard bike pump nozzles, so an adapter can help create a tight seal.

Insert the pump nozzle into the valve. Secure it as tightly as possible to avoid air escaping while pumping.

Start pumping. Use steady, consistent strokes to push air into the mattress. This may take a few minutes, depending on the mattress size and type of pump (hand or foot).

Stop once fully inflated. Once the mattress feels firm enough, remove the nozzle and quickly close the valve to trap the air.

It’s a bit of a workout, but it gets the job done!

6. Blow It Up Manually (With Your Mouth)

If all else fails, you can always inflate your air mattress the old-fashioned way — with your lungs. This method is far from ideal, particularly for larger mattresses, but it can work in a pinch if you have no tools or devices available.

Note: This can be tiring and may cause lightheadedness. Take breaks as needed, and don’t overexert yourself.

Here’s how to do it safely and effectively:

Lay the mattress flat. Unfold it completely and place it on a clean, open surface.

Clean the valve. Since your mouth will be in direct contact, wipe the valve with a disinfectant or clean cloth to remove dirt and bacteria.

Create a good seal. Place your mouth over the valve, ensuring it’s completely covered so air doesn’t escape as you blow.

Start blowing. Take deep breaths and blow air steadily into the mattress. Rest in between if you start to feel dizzy or tired.

Continue until full. It might take several minutes, especially for a full or queen-sized mattress. For a single or smaller mattress, it’s more manageable.

Get help if needed. If you’re struggling to finish, ask a friend or family member to take over. Just make sure to clean the valve before swapping!

Once the mattress is inflated to your liking, close the valve tightly and you’re done.

To Sum Up

Lacking a pump doesn’t have to be a setback. With a bit of creativity and some everyday tools, you can still get your air mattress fully inflated and ready for use.

The methods in this article offer simple solutions for just about any situation:

Method

Best For

Requires Electricity?

Effort Level

Plastic Bag

Camping or outdoor use

Moderate

Hair Dryer

Indoor use with outlets

Low

Leaf Blower

Fast inflation at home

/ (gas or electric)

Low

Vacuum (blower)

Homes with shop vacs or blower mode

Low–Moderate

Bike Pump

Campers or cyclists

Moderate

Manual (mouth)

Last-resort / no tools at all

High

Once you’ve chosen the method that fits your setup, the key is to make a tight seal at the valve and keep at it until the mattress feels firm. With the right technique, comfort is just a few steps away — even without a pump.

While air mattresses are handy and have come a long way in terms of durability, there are still some problems that you may face using them. One of the most frequent issues you may encounter is the formation of a bubble.

Bubbles develop in an air mattress due to overinflation, wear and tear, improper handling, or poor quality. Fixing it may require deflating and re-inflating the mattress. Sleeping on a bulged mattress is unsafe for prolonged periods, and a bubble is a sign of irreversible damage in an air mattress.

Keep reading to find out more about bubbles in air mattresses. I’ll also review how they are formed, solutions to the problem, and ways you can ensure that you don’t get any. Let’s get started!

Why Your Air Mattress Develops Bubbles

Your air mattress develops a bubble (or more of them) when there is uneven air pressure inside it. This is likely to happen when the mattress is over-inflated, but it can be a result of poor quality materials or even wear and tear on an old mattress.

In order to avoid getting a bubble in your air mattress, I’d first like to explain how that bubble forms. Basically, the air inside the mattress is pressing against the interior walls. When the pressure is uneven or too high, some of the material may become weaker and allow for more air to push it outwards, creating a bubble.

Before you understand how to remedy or prevent the situation, it’s best to understand the reasons for bubble formation. Here are the main ways that an air mattress could develop a bubble:

Over-Inflation

The most common way a bubble forms in an air mattress is over-inflation. Most people prefer their mattresses to be slightly firm. Usually, people over-inflate their air mattresses in hopes of making them firmer.

While this is the most common reason for bubble formation, there is a simple solution to fix it — just deflate the air mattress and start over. However, it is worth mentioning that each time you over-inflate the mattress, you’re causing minor irreversible damage to the material. This leads to the mattress wearing out faster.

Worn-Out Materials

Air mattresses are typically made of a PVC (polyvinyl chloride) material — which is a fancy way of saying they are made of sturdy, flexible plastic. However, despite its durability, the material can only stretch so much. When a mattress is repeatedly inflated, the plastic material of the mattress wears thin.

Over time, the worn-out material of a mattress cannot withstand the air pressure within. In turn, the uneven pressure will lead to the formation of a bulge in the air mattress.

Poor Quality Materials

Another reason that a bubble may form in an air mattress is that the material used to make the air mattress is of poor quality. Using cheaper, low-quality materials may reduce the cost (and price) of the mattress, but it does mean that the mattress is not likely to last very long. Caring for a low-quality mattress is considerably harder than doing so for a high-quality one.

Generally, the PVC used is thinner and thus more likely to wear out when over-inflated, leading to easier bubble formation. Additionally, if the mattress is manufactured with low-cost processes, the seams may be very weak. The seams may not be able to handle even the slightest over-inflation.

Misuse

Improper use of an air mattress will inevitably lead to a bulge somewhere in the mattress. Aside from inflating it above its capacity, there are a few other ways you may be misusing your air mattress:

Exceeding the maximum weight limits. The user’s manual usually includes a limit to the total weight that the air mattress can withstand. Continually using the air mattress with heavier objects (or people) on it will likely lead to uneven distribution of air pressure and wear out of the PVC material. Both these issues typically lead to a bulging in the air mattress.

Keeping it inflated for prolonged periods. Most manufacturers recommend that an air mattress should be deflated periodically in order to reduce strain on the material. This issue is more prominent if the air mattress is kept over-inflated.

Improper storage. Although unlikely, improperly storing your air mattress could lead to damage to the material, which may cause bubbles.

Drastically changing ambient temperature. Changes in ambient temperature affect your air mattress because if there is a stark difference between its internal and external temperatures, more pressure is applied on one side of PVC materials. This difference leads to stretching and can cause bubble formation.

Easy Steps to Fix a Bubble in Your Air Mattress

You can fix a bubble in an air mattress by deflating and re-inflating it. However, this process wears down the material of the mattress over time, and preventing a bubble from forming is always better.

Regardless, fixing the bulge in your air mattress isn’t too difficult. Here are the steps in more detail.

1. Deflate the Mattress Completely

To begin fixing the bubble in your air mattress, deflate the mattress completely. This allows the material to relax and may help reduce the bubble. Open the valve to let all the air out, and gently press on the bubble area to help the air escape.

2. Inspect for Damage

Once the mattress is deflated, inspect it for any damage. Look for any tears, holes, or weak seams around the bubble area. If you find any damage, mark the spot so you can address it later.

3. Patch Any Leaks

If there are punctures or tears contributing to the bubble, you’ll need to patch them. Use a patch kit designed specifically for air mattresses. Clean the area around the hole, apply the adhesive, and place the patch over the hole. Make sure to allow it to dry according to the kit’s instructions.

4. Reinflate the Mattress Slowly

After addressing any damage, reinflate the mattress slowly. This helps ensure even air distribution and allows you to check if the bubble reappears. Gradually add air to the mattress, stopping once it is firm but not overly tight.

If you’re interested in learning alternative ways to inflate your mattress without a pump, be sure to check out our article for creative solutions.

5. Redistribute the Air Manually

As you inflate the mattress, if you notice a bubble beginning to form again, stop and gently press on the bubble to push the air to other areas. Continue inflating while keeping an eye on the bubble to ensure it doesn’t return.

6. Consider Professional Repair or Replacement

If the bubble persists despite your efforts, it could indicate a significant defect in the mattress. In such cases, contacting the manufacturer for repair options or considering a replacement might be necessary.

Is It Safe to Sleep on a Bubbled Air Mattress?

Sleeping on an air mattress with bubbles is not safe, especially for prolonged periods. The mattress might pop, but it is more likely to cause back pain and other spinal health issues.

It’s worth noting that air mattresses aren’t particularly good for back support and are only meant for temporary use. However, this problem is exacerbated if you’re sleeping on an air mattress with bubbles. Not only will it be uncomfortable, but it can lead to serious irreversible damage to your back. Symptoms of conditions such as a slipped disk can become more prominent if someone is sleeping on an air mattress with a large bulge.

Of course, there is also the risk that the mattress will be punctured because the bubble is a weak point in the mattress’ exterior structure. While this is not dangerous per se, it may be startling during the nighttime if the air bed bursts during your sleep. The damage to the air bed would be practically irreversible.

Tips for Keeping Your Air Mattress Free of Bubbles

By now, you’re probably wondering if there is a way to prevent bubble formation in your air mattress. If you care for your mattress properly and avoid misusing it, you can significantly prolong its lifespan. Here are a few ways you can avoid getting a bulge in your air bed:

Pump Carefully

Regardless of the quality of your air bed, it is always a good practice to pump slowly and carefully. If you are pumping air too fast into the mattress, you run the risk of over-inflating it or uneven inflation.

Some people even invest in a pressure meter to control the flow of air into the mattress, although this solution may not work for all air bed models.

Invest in a Dual Pump System

Dual pump system air mattresses are more expensive, and rightly so. The two pumps are not both used in the inflation process. Instead, one is used as normal (to inflate the mattress), and the other pump is used to monitor and maintain pressure within the mattress.

The system is highly successful in preventing unnecessary overinflation and helps keep the mattress firmer for longer. This EnerPlex Air Mattress on Amazon is a good example. It comes in several different sizes and it’s very durable.

Periodically Deflate Your Air Mattress

Keeping the air mattress inflated for a long time puts a lot of strain on the exterior plastic and the seams. Ensure that you deflate your air mattress periodically, especially if you do not intend to use it for a prolonged period.

For example, you might consider deflating the mattress when you wake up a couple of times every week and re-inflating it before you sleep. The only problem with this prevention strategy is that you run the risk of over-inflating the air mattress if you are not careful.

Monitor Room Temperature

If the temperature in your room drops for any reason, your air mattress will deflate slightly. Although the amount of air that leaves the mattress may not be noticeable, it can accumulate over time. Moreover, the air inside the mattress contracting can cause an imbalance in the air pressure and lead to bulging.

To avoid this problem, make sure that the ambient temperature around the air mattress doesn’t fluctuate too drastically. If you intend to turn off the heat in your room, consider deflating the mattress first or raising it off the floor.

Avoid Excess Weight

As I’ve mentioned earlier, manufacturers usually provide a recommended weight limit for each air mattress model. The limit is based on rigorous testing that is done on the air mattress to determine how much the air bed can handle without being damaged (either by rupturing or through other means).

Before you purchase an air mattress, consider who will be using it and whether their weight falls roughly within the weight limit. Additionally, do not place heavy objects on the mattress, especially while it is inflated.

Heavy objects place a lot of pressure on the air mattress and therefore weaken the material. Increased pressure on a small part of the air bed can lead to it bursting.

Regular Inspection

Before you inflate your air mattress, it’s a good idea to inspect the entire mattress for any uneven areas. It’s easier to fix a small bulge than wait for a larger one to develop.

Furthermore, make sure that you are watching your mattress during the inflation process. Look out for any areas that are inflating faster than others. If you feel that one part of the mattress is rising higher than the rest, stop inflating and even out the air.

You may need an extra pair of hands while inflating for this purpose. Have your partner press down on the bulging part of the mattress as you inflate it.

Stretch Out Your Mattress

Last but not least, it’s good practice to allow your mattress to stretch out naturally. When a mattress is fully inflated, and you sleep on it, it naturally deflates a little. However, this will cause stretch on the areas where your bodyweight is pressing onto the mattress. The uneven stretching can make it easier for a bubble to form on pressure points.

To avoid uneven stretching of the mattress, it’s best to inflate it completely and leave it for 24 hours without putting any weight on it. This will ensure that the air mattress stretches out naturally without any added pressure. It may deflate slightly, so you may want to re-inflate it after the stretching-out process.

Store Your Air Mattress Correctly

When the mattress is deflated, it is recommended that you store it in a cool, dry place in the same packaging that the manufacturer has provided. Check the instructions manual for specific recommendations on how to store your air bed.

Proper storage ensures that the exterior material of your air mattress doesn’t get damaged while it is stored. For example, pressing too hard on the seams stretches them too much and gives way to bulging.

Final Thoughts

Bubble formation in an air mattress is a common issue that many face at one point or another. Luckily, by following our tips, you can fix the bulge in your air mattress. With proper care and correct usage, you can also prolong the life of your air mattress and avoid getting those pesky bubbles moving forward.

Suppose you’re looking to transport a mattress from point A to B and don’t want to hire a truck — it’s a tempting thought to strap it to the roof of your car. But before you do that, please read this helpful guide on safely securing a mattress to your roof rack.

To secure a mattress on a roof rack, you’ll need two ratchet straps, a ladder, and a strong helper. The idea is to tie the bed snugly enough so it does not flap around in the wind, but not so tight as to damage the mattress or car paint.

This article will guide you through the process of strapping a mattress to your roof rack step-by-step. This method will work in a pinch, although it’s not the safest or most recommended way to transport a mattress. However, you can do it safely and effectively by following my expert tips. Let’s dive right in!

1. Make Sure You Properly Secure Your Roof Rack to Your Car

Before you even think about putting a mattress on your roof, you must ensure you have adequately secured your roof rack to your car. If it’s not, the whole setup could come crashing down on the highway, landing you in a potentially tight spot with law enforcement.

To check if your roof rack is adequately secured, grab it from the middle and try to wiggle it back and forth. It should be snug with no movement. If loose, tighten the bolts or straps holding the roof rack.

You might also want to check the manual for your specific roof rack to see if there are any special instructions on securing it properly. For example, some roof racks need special tools to tighten the bolts correctly.

If you notice damage like rust or cracks, it’s probably a good idea to replace your roof rack before putting anything on it. After all, you don’t want your mattress crashing down on your windscreen because of a faulty roof rack.

2. Remove Anything on the Car That Could Poke the Mattress

Most cars and SUVs come with an antenna or some other kind of protrusion on the roof. And while these might not seem like a big deal, they can cause a lot of damage to a mattress if you don’t remove them before strapping it down.

I made this rookie mistake once. I was moving a mattress and didn’t remove the antenna from my car before securing it to the roof rack. As you can probably guess, the antenna ended up poking a hole in the mattress. And let me tell you, it wasn’t fun trying to patch that up.

I ended up having to buy a new mattress, so learn from my mistake and remove anything that could potentially puncture your mattress before strapping it down.

3. Have Your Helper Take Position on the Ladder

Ok, so this is where things get a little physical. You will need a helper to strap a mattress to a roof rack. And not just any helper, but someone strong enough to lift the mattress onto the roof with little help.

Once you’ve found your helper, have them sit on the ladder next to the car. They should be close enough to the roof rack to reach it, but not where they’re in danger of breaking your windows.

However, it is essential to remember that ladders can be dangerous. If you or your helper are uncomfortable using one, please don’t attempt this method. You could pursue other ways to transport a mattress that don’t involve heights.

4. Place the Mattress on the Roof Rack

Once your helper is in position, it’s time to load the mattress onto the roof rack. You first want to center it on the roof rack, so it’s evenly balanced. You don’t want it hanging off to one side or the other, leading to stability issues.

If the mattress is too heavy for your helper to lift on their own, you can try rolling it onto the roof. But be careful not to damage the mattress or your car.

Also, I don’t recommend transporting a king-size mattress on top of a small car. It’s just too big and unwieldy. If you have a king-size bed, you might consider renting a van or truck for the day.

5. Use Straps or Ropes to Secure the Mattress to the Roof Rack

After the mattress is in place on the roof rack, it’s time to secure it so that it doesn’t fall off while you’re driving. The best way to do this is with ratchet straps.

You can get these at any hardware store, and they’re inexpensive. Just make sure that you get the right size for your mattress. You don’t want the straps to be too loose or too tight.

I suggest getting 15-foot-long straps to have sufficient length to work properly. These straps will handle anything you throw at them, even two mattresses. Always get quality straps that won’t snap on you while driving.

I highly recommend the AUGO Ratchet Tie-Down Straps. This 15-foot ratchet strap set offers secure S hooks that are rubber-coated to protect your vehicle and possessions and a quick-release latch for extra fast tightening. They also come in a 4-pack and offer 2,200 pounds of breaking strength which should secure your cargo!

If you don’t have access to ratchet straps, you can also use a rope to secure the mattress. But be warned, this method is not as reliable as using straps. Rope can stretch and come loose over time, so it’s not the best option if you’re looking for a bulletproof solution.

Once you have the straps, loop them around the mattress and through the roof rack. It would be best to do this near both ends of the mattress. Then, tighten the straps so the bed is snug against the roof rack. You don’t want it to move around at all.

If you’re using rope, tie it off as tightly as possible. Ensure the knots are secure and won’t come undone while driving. Also, take into account weather conditions such as high winds.

6. Drive Carefully and Watch for Overhanging Objects

Now that you have secured the mattress to the roof rack, it’s time to hit the road. But before you do, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

Drive carefully: You don’t want to go around corners too fast or make sudden stops. The mattress could shift on the roof and come loose.

Be on the lookout for low bridges or overhanging objects. It could be damaged beyond repair if the mattress hits one of these. So take it slow and be careful.

Have someone in the passenger seat who can keep an eye on the mattress and ensure it’s still secure. But if you’re driving alone, you’ll have to be extra careful.

7. Unload the Mattress Carefully From Your Roof Rack

Once you’ve arrived at your destination, it’s time to unload the mattress. Here’s how you can do it safely:

Make sure that the area is clear. You don’t want anyone or anything to be in the way when you unload the mattress. Some mattresses can be heavy, especially spring mattresses.

Take your time. Securing your mattress is not a race — if you rush, you could damage the mattress or your car. You also want to coordinate with your helper, so everyone knows what to do at what time.

Be careful not to drop the mattress. Ideally, you should have someone there to help you lower it down gently. But if you’re alone, take your time and be careful.

Once the mattress is on the ground, remove the straps or rope, and your work is complete!

Things to Know When Transporting a Mattress on a Roof Rack

Is It Illegal to Carry a Mattress on Your Roof Rack?

The short answer is: No; you will not get in trouble with the police for carrying a mattress on your roof rack. But you might get some unwanted attention.

Carrying a mattress on top of your car is legal — as long as it does not obstruct your vision and is securely tied down.

If the mattress is not adequately secured, it could fall off while you’re driving and cause an accident. This negligence amounts to reckless driving, and you could be ticketed or even arrested — so be sure you properly secure your cargo!

So, it would be best to take the time to secure the mattress properly using high-quality straps. If you do, you shouldn’t have to worry.

Do You Need a Special Roof Rack to Carry a Mattress?

No, you don’t need a specialized roof rack to carry a mattress. Any roof rack will do, as long as it’s big enough to fit the bed and you have straps long enough to go around the mattress and secure it to the rack.

You also want to be particularly careful of the front strap. It is the most likely point of failure, so ensure it’s tight and secure. You also want to ensure it is as close as possible to the mattress’s front edge.

What if You Don’t Have a Roof Rack?

Yes, you can strap the mattress to your car even if you don’t have a roof rack. You can use ratchet straps or rope to secure the bed to the car. However, the securing strap will have to pass through the car’s interior, so it’s essential to ensure that it won’t damage the car’s upholstery.

It’s also essential to ensure the mattress is secure and won’t slip off the car while driving.

If you’re not confident in your ability to strap the mattress to your car, you can always ask for help or watch a few YouTube videos on how to use ratchet straps, such as this handy tutorial:

When to Hire a Van or Moving Company

Here’s the thing:

Hiring a van or moving company is probably not worth your time or money if you only move one mattress and its box. You can easily transport this setup on top of your car with planning and effort.

However, if you’re moving several items or your mattress is very large or heavy, it might be worth your while to hire professional help. They’ll have the proper equipment and experience to do the job quickly and safely.

So, if you’re moving a mattress, ask yourself if you need a van or a moving company. If not, save yourself some money and do it yourself. You can also hire or borrow a van or truck for a day if your car is not suitable for the task.

Can You Fold the Mattress and Squeeze It Into the Back Seat?

You cannot always fold a mattress. For example, you cannot fold spring mattresses. But if you have a memory foam mattress, you might be able to fold and squeeze it into a reasonably tight space.

The idea is to wrap the mattress in plastic or hold it down with a ratchet strap, so it stays in place after folding. Then you can try to squeeze it into the back seat. But be warned – this is not as easy as it sounds.

The mattress might not fit, or you might have difficulty getting it into the car. And even if you manage to get it in, there’s a good chance it will be damaged.

So, unless you’re desperate, we wouldn’t recommend trying to fold the mattress and squeeze it into the back seat. It’s just not worth the hassle.

Final Thoughts

That’s all there is to it. Now you know how to strap a mattress to a roof rack. Remember to take your time, be careful, and use ratchet straps or rope to secure the bed. Then you can hit the road with your mattress in tow.

Also, if you’re not confident in your ability to strap the mattress to your car, you can always ask for help. The experienced person will strap it down for you so that you can hit the road with peace of mind.

There are many different reasons to purchase an air mattress, and there are almost as many different sizes of air mattresses. If you buy an air mattress for a spare bedroom or temporary bed, then a queen-size mattress might be your best option.

The dimensions for the queen-size air mattress vary between 56-62 inches wide to 76-80 inches long and anywhere from 9-25 inches deep.

So, let’s discuss the specifics of queen air mattresses and why you might want to choose a queen size. I’ll tell you about the most common dimensions for a queen-size air mattress and give you some recommendations based on size and weight so you can find the best one for you!

How Big Are Queen-Size Air Mattresses?

A queen-size air mattress might be a good option if you are looking for a more comfortable option during a camping trip and have a large enough tent. These mattresses are also easier to pack away than larger varieties, making them perfect for people who occasionally have visitors.

Queen-size air mattresses are generally 60x80x9 inches. However, there are several different heights, and they can be up to 25 inches thick.

A larger air mattress, such as a queen-size one, is typically best for a spare bedroom rather than camping simply because most tents will not accommodate the larger air mattress. However, if you have a large tent, nothing beats having all the room and thickness a queen-size air mattress offers.

Queen-Size Air Mattress Dimensions Vary by Brand

Unlike regular beds, air mattress sizes can vary.

Most of the time, the mattress’s thickness is what will change the most by brand. However, the length and width can also be different, usually ranging from 70 to 80 inches long. In some cases, it can be as short as 52 inches.

Coleman air mattresses are one of the better brands. You can pick up an excellent Coleman queen-size air mattress on Amazon for around $70-$140. There are, of course, less expensive options; however, if you plan on any long-term use, it is a good idea to spend a little bit more money. Intex and Beautyrest are also good options for longer-term use.

Enerplex is another good brand. They offer considerable height differences for their queen-size air mattress, ranging between 9-18 inches. They also provide a high-speed, built-in pump, making airing up even a queen-size bed quick.

Examples of Queen Air Mattresses With Different Dimensions

When it comes to affordability, you do not have to sacrifice quality. There are excellent brands of air mattresses, some with manufacturer warranties, all offering queen air mattresses with different dimensions.

So, let’s look at the best queen air mattresses and find one with dimensions and features that fit your needs. All of these mattresses are available on Amazon, so check them out if one interests you:

Queen Size Coleman Camping Cot: Best For Camping

If you’re looking for a queen-size air mattress for camping, I highly recommend the Queen Size Coleman Camping Cot. I personally love this one because it has a built-in cot.

It comes at only 59″L x 22″W x 78″T. However, weighing in at almost 42 pounds, it is not light, so it’s best for “glamping” or car camping.

Do Queen-Size Sheets Fit Queen-Size Air Mattresses?

Most queen-size sheets fit queen air mattresses, but if your air mattress is particularly thick, you may need king or deep-pocket queen sheets. Even the longest and widest queen air mattresses can fit in queen sheets, but some double-high air mattresses may be too thick for the pockets.

Why Use an Air Mattress?

An air mattress is an excellent choice if you need a temporary bed because you are traveling or having visitors. While most of the manufacturers recommend against full-time use of an air mattress, many people do use them daily for the bed instead of a more expensive traditional mattress.

Depending on why you want an air mattress can factor into the size you end up with. While the dimensions on the queen-size bed may not vary, the amount of weight you put on the mattress could. Most queen-size mattresses can handle up to 600 lbs, with a few capable of holding up to 700 lbs.

If you recently moved or are planning on moving, or if you know that your residence is going to be temporary, an air mattress may be a good option. The versatile nature of the bed, the ability to store it easily, and the ability to quickly inflate or deflate most brands make it a favorite for many travelers.

In Conclusion

There are a lot of different brands of air mattresses available. While the dimensions aren’t that different from one brand to another, they vary slightly.

Choosing the best one for your needs comes down to deciding which brand you like best, what extras are essential, how you plan to use it, and how much you are willing to spend.

Selling a used mattress in the United States might seem like a no-brainer, but it turns out that there are some specific laws surrounding this activity. Whether you want to dispose of an idle mattress from your house or sell it and buy a new one, it’s essential to understand the legalities involved. So, you may wonder if selling a used mattress is illegal.

Selling a used mattress is not illegal in most parts of the United States. However, selling a used mattress in some states is unlawful and may attract a fine. In other states, you can only resell a mattress if it meets specific requirements like tagging and labeling.

In the rest of this article, I’ll discuss the federal and state laws on selling used mattresses. I’ll also cover how you can successfully sell your used mattress. Keep reading to find out!

What States Is It Illegal to Sell Used Mattresses?

The only state where no one is allowed to sell used mattresses is Kansas. However, the following states ban retail of these pre-owned items; Louisiana, Indiana, Maryland, and Washington. However, you should always check with your local health department if unsure.

The table below shows the states where it’s illegal to sell used mattresses:

State

State Code

Conditions

Kansas

KS

Not allowed at all

Louisiana

LA

It’s illegal for retailers

Indiana

IN

It’s illegal for retailers

Maryland

MD

It’s illegal for retailers

Washington

WA

It’s illegal for retailers

Table: States where it’s illegal to sell used mattresses

In some states, you should contact your local health department for clarification. These states are the following:

Wyoming (WY)

Alaska (AK)

Idaho (ID)

Maine (ME)

Nebraska (NE)

North Dakota (ND)

Oklahoma (OK)

Rhode Island (RI)

South Dakota (SD)

Federal Laws on the Resale of Pre-Owned Mattresses

The federal government devised laws to regulate the resale of mattresses in the United States. This regulation is because used mattresses increase the spread of bed bugs, dust mites, and scabies. Mattresses are conducive hiding places for bed bugs since they offer tight spaces for the pests to reside.

The following are some federal government laws regarding the resale of mattresses:

Cleaning Requirements for Used Mattrasses

Some states pay special attention to the mattress’s condition before being sold. For example, in states like California, you can’t resell a mattress with visible soiling or stain marks. Such a mattress is considered “unsanitary” and illegal to sell. You can only resell such a mattress if you first clean and disinfect it.

In other states, you must sanitize the mattress and encase it in plastic before selling it. This policy is to protect the buyer from any germs or bacteria that might be on the mattress.

Labeling Requirements for Pre-Owned Mattresses

The federal government also requires all people selling mattresses to place a label indicating they are “used.” This label should also include the following information:

The name and address of the seller.

The date that they sold the mattress.

A statement that the mattress is “used.”

The seller must place this label in a conspicuous location on the mattress.

The labeling requirements protect buyers by helping them know what they are getting. The following are the color-coded systems used to label mattresses and their meanings:

White: It indicates a new mattress made with new stuffings. Apart from the white color, the government stipulates that retailers selling new mattresses must add the tag “New.” In this case, you can claim against the retailer if you find reused parts on the mattress.

Yellow and Red: They indicate sanitized or rebuilt mattresses. In other words, these are used mattresses that have been cleaned and repaired.

Pesticide Application Requirements for Second-Hand Mattresses

Another law concerning the sale of used mattresses and other second-hand objects is that they should be free of bed bugs and other pests. The best way to meet this requirement is to have the mattress treated with pesticides by a licensed exterminator.

You should also take measures to prevent bed bugs from infesting your mattress in the first place. This prevention includes regularly vacuuming your bedroom and using encasements on your mattress and box spring.

Used Mattress Filling Regulations

Your Mattress filling usually comprises materials like cotton, latex, memory foam, wool, or feathers in the mattress. When selling a used mattress, you must ensure that the filling is still in good condition — because some fillings can break down over time and become lumpy.

You can only reuse or sell mattress parts like springs in some states because springs are the most durable part of a mattress.

Used Mattress Flammability Standard

Bed fires were on the rise in the US. from 2000 to 2005, leading to the death of at least 95 people yearly. As such, the federal government moved in to combat the menace by enacting the mattress flammability standard.

The federal government passed a flammability standard in July 2007 to fight bed fires, which, in most cases, resulted from flammable mattresses. The flammability standard prescribes the mattress testing code for ignition resistance when exposed to substances like a lighted cigarette.

During the initial 30 minutes of the test, the government requires that the mattress not exceed a 200 kW peak heat release rate. The total heat release should not exceed 10 MJ over the first ten minutes of the test.

All mattresses made after July 2007 must comply with this federal law. Thus, you must ensure the mattress complies with this law before reselling it.

State Laws on the Selling of Used Mattresses

While federal laws provide a general overview of what you can and cannot do when reselling a used mattress — state laws offer more specific regulations. The difference is that each state has its own set of rules concerning the sale of used mattresses.

For instance, in Texas, you must clean the mattress and attach a tag indicating it is a used item. On the other hand, your mattress must not have visible stains before selling it if you live in California. As such, it’s necessary to contact your state’s consumer protection office to get more information about the specific laws in your area.

If you’re a buyer, you should be aware of the warranty and return policy of the store from which you’re buying the used mattress. Some stores may not accept returns or issue refunds for used mattresses.

What States Is It Legal to Sell Used Mattresses?

There are over 30 states where it is legal to sell used mattresses, including California, Florida, Hawaii, New York, New Mexico, and Texas. However, each has specific regulations regarding the sale requirements — so you should research your regional health legislation.

The table below shows the states where it’s legal to sell used mattresses:

State

State Code

Selling Conditions

Alabama

AL

Never claim that a used mattress is new

Michigan

MI

Label the mattress

Arizona

AZ

You must sanitize the mattress before selling

Arkansas

AR

Don’t claim that the mattress is new

California

CA

The mattress must be free of stains

Colorado

CO

Sanitize the mattress before they sell

Connecticut

CT

Sanitize and label the mattress appropriately

Delaware

DE

Sanitize the mattress before selling

Florida

FL

Sanitize the mattress before selling

Georgia

GA

Label used fillings

Hawaii

HI

Label the mattress

Massachusetts

MA

Label the mattress

Illinois

IL

Label the mattress

Lowa

IA

Label the mattress

Kentucky

KY

Label the mattress

Minnesota

MN

Sanitize the mattress

Mississippi

MS

Label the mattress

Missouri

MO

Label the mattress

Montana

MT

Label the mattress

Nevada

NV

Sanitize the mattress

New Jersey

NJ

Sanitize the mattress

New Mexico

NM

Sanitize the mattress

New York

NY

Retailers require a special license

North Carolina

NC

Sanitize the mattress

Ohio

OH

Label the mattress

Oregon

OR

Label the mattress

Pennsylvania

PA

Label the mattress

South Carolina

SC

Sanitize the mattress

Tennessee

TN

Label the mattress

Texas

TX

Sanitize and label the mattress

Utah

UT

Label the mattress

Vermont

VT

Don’t claim that a used mattress is new

Virginia

VA

Sanitize the mattress

Washington

WA

Only for individuals

West Virginia

WV

Label the mattress

Wisconsin

WI

Label the mattress

Louisiana

LA

Only for individuals

Maryland

MD

Only for individuals

Indiana

IN

Only for individuals

Table: States where it’s legal to sell used mattresses

How to Sell Your Used Mattress

Selling your used mattress can be challenging due to a myriad of factors to consider. Some of these factors are:

The applicable laws in your state

The mattress’s age

Pricing

Advertising

Suitable marketplaces

We’ve created a step-wise guide below to help you get over these factors and sell your mattress quickly:

Know the Law Regarding Used Mattress Sales

As discussed, the laws on the sale of second-hand mattresses vary by state. While some states are lenient, others have strict regulations. As such, the first step is to research and find out the applicable laws in your state.

This research will help you avoid legal issues from selling your used mattress.

It’s worth noting that although some states permit reselling of mattresses, you must meet certain conditions. These conditions include:

The mattress must be clean and free of bed bugs

You must label the mattress

You must sanitize the mattress

Price the Mattress Competitively

Pricing is an essential consideration when you decide to resell your mattress. Your price for the mattress determines if you’ll get customers quickly.

Competitive pricing involves choosing strategic price points that make your mattress attractive to buyers based on the prevailing market competition.

To do this, you must first research the prices of similar mattresses in the market — which will give you an idea of how much to charge for your mattress.

You should also consider discounts if the mattress is old or has some wear and tear.

However, don’t sell the mattress at a price that’s too low; it might ruin your chances of making a profit.

Advertise the Used Mattress

After pricing your mattress competitively, the next step is to let people know it’s up for sale. You can put up physical posters in your neighborhood or advertise them on online platforms like Facebook. The focus is to make a compelling advert for potential buyers.

When promoting the mattress, make sure to include clear and attractive pictures. You should also highlight the critical features of the mattress as well as any benefits it has.

The advertisement must capture:

The mattress size

Fabrics

Age (how old is the mattress?)

How the mattress was used (for guests or primary bed).

Any issues related to the use of the mattress

Materials (latex, spring, memory foam, or polyfoam)

The asking price and whether it’s negotiable or fixed

It’s also essential to be honest about the condition of the mattress because buyers are likely to be disappointed if they find out that the mattress is not in your advertised state. Such a situation can damage your reputation and make it challenging to sell the mattress.

Find Suitable Marketplaces for Your Mattress

Now that you have an advert, it’s time to find where to get potential customers — this is where marketplaces come in.

You can use many online and offline marketplaces to sell your mattress. Some of these platforms are the following:

eBay

Facebook groups

OfferUp App

Amazon

Offline yard sales

Local classifieds like Craigslist

These platforms provide an excellent way to reach out to potential buyers. They also allow you to sell the mattress at a higher price.

It’s essential to note that some marketplaces may restrict the sale of used mattresses. You must research their terms and conditions before listing your mattress.

Moreover, the most active platforms in your area increase your chances of selling a mattress as quickly as possible. Thus, you should consider listing the mattress on multiple platforms.

Negotiate and Sell the Mattress

After advertising your mattress on your chosen platform, you should now wait for buyers to contact you. It’s time to negotiate once a buyer expresses interest in the mattress.

The negotiation process is an essential step in selling a used mattress because it helps you get the best possible price for the mattress.

You should be reasonable and considerate of the buyer’s budget when negotiating. It would help if you also tried not to be too attached to the mattress, as this might make it challenging to let go of it.

Once you’ve agreed on the price, it’s time to sell the mattress. Be sure to decide on a suitable payment method and delivery option with the buyer.

Here are some tricks to try if it takes long without getting a buyer:

Lower the price

Consider giving discounts

Advertise on more platforms

Create a more eye-catching listing title. Such a title must have a promise of what buyers should expect

Offer free delivery services

Final Thoughts

Selling a used mattress is a great way to make extra money. However, following the proper steps is essential to avoid legal or financial issues. These steps include: knowing the law, pricing the mattress competitively, advertising it, and finding suitable marketplaces.

Did you just notice a bed bug in your room – or wait, was it two? A couple of bed bugs is surely nothing to worry about, and killing them should rid your room (& home) of the critters, right? However, what if around every corner and inside every crack of your home, there’s a colony of bed bugs waiting to feast when you go to sleep?

If one room has bed bugs, all rooms in your home may have bed bugs. A bed bug infestation will generally start in a single room and is contained for a few weeks. Then, as the bed bugs start to reproduce and grow in number, they’ll eventually spread all over the house.

In this article, I’ll take you through a detailed overview of how bed bugs spread from room to room and how to tell if the infestation is growing. Below, I’ve also shared dedicated sections with guides on stopping bed bugs from spreading, ways to rid bed bugs from your home, and steps you can take to prevent an infestation from happening.

Will Bed Bugs Spread to Other Rooms?

Bed bugs will spread to other rooms with time, especially if you don’t bother taking quick action as soon as you find them in one of your rooms. If you take a lenient approach thinking only a few bed bugs will do no harm, they’ll quickly multiply and infest the whole house in a matter of weeks.

At first, bed bugs will only inhabit one of the rooms in your home, typically the bedroom. They’ll hide inside your bed mattress and come out at night to feed on your blood.

Now, if you’re extremely lucky and don’t have any female bed bugs in your home, the few male ones in your mattress will feast on your blood for a few months and then die.

That said, if you have even one female bed bug, it can lay 1-7 eggs daily, averaging around 200-250 in her lifetime. Each egg takes roughly a week to hatch, and the hatchlings will start to lay eggs within a week or two.

As you can imagine, if left unchecked, a single bed bug can grow into a colony of thousands within a couple of months. Moreover, every single one of them will need to feed on the blood of humans or other mammals to survive.

This hunger, and the bed bugs’ amazing ability to find warm-blooded hosts, will lead them to other rooms where your family members or pets sleep, thereby spreading the infestation throughout your home.

How Do Bed Bugs Spread Between Rooms?

Bed bugs can’t fly or jump, and we rarely see them walking across the floor. So, how do they spread from one room to another?

Bed bugs spread between rooms by latching onto your clothes or pet’s fur. They can also directly move from one room to another if they sense a food source.

Typically, bed bugs will hide inside your clothes, bedsheet, and other types of soft fabric. They can also inhabit old furniture, soft toys, and used books.

Now, when you unknowingly move one of these objects with bed bugs from one room to another, the critters also get free transport to a different part of your house.

For instance, bed bugs can get carried from your bedroom to the laundry room by latching onto your bedsheets and pillowcases. From there, they can again latch onto other clothes. And as you take your clothes to different areas of your home, the bed bugs get transported as well.

Now, while hitchhiking is the bed bugs’ preferred way of transport, they can also move between rooms very quickly, especially if they sense a food source. Typically, a bed bug can cover 100 ft in an hour, whereas they can reach top speeds up to 240ft/hour.

However, if bed bugs move from one room to another, won’t we be able to see them?

Well, yes, but not always.

It’s important to keep in mind that bed bugs are as small as an apple seed and as flat as a credit card. As a result, they can easily squeeze into cracks in the walls, doors, electrical sockets, or piping and then travel between rooms.

How to Know if Bed Bugs Have Spread to Other Rooms

You just noticed one or two bed bugs in one of your rooms.

How can you tell if these are the only bed bugs in your home? And more importantly, in case there are more, are they confined to that room alone, or have they already spread to other corners of your house?

The first thing you should do if you think you found bed bugs in one of your rooms is to ensure that they are indeed bed bugs and not some other type of insect.

If they are bed bugs, you need to act quickly.

Search every place around your home where bed bugs commonly hide out and look for signs of a bed bug infestation. If you notice bed bugs or signs of their presence in several rooms, it means they have spread throughout your home.

To help you out, I’ve prepared a guide on how to tell bed bugs from other critters, shared some of the most common places to search for them, and listed a few signs you should look out for.

Identifying Bed Bugs

There’s a wide variety of insects on the planet, and it’s easy to confuse them with each other. For instance, many people mistake fleas, carpet beetles, and cockroach nymphs for bed bugs.

Therefore, it’s important to ensure that you indeed have bed bugs in your home before you start worrying about whether they’ve spread and how to get rid of them.

A bed bug has an oval shape and is as flat as a credit card. In terms of color, they can have a reddish or brownish appearance, sometimes with black stripes.

If it’s fully grown, a bed bug is usually the size of an apple seed – around 0.3 inches in length, while hatchlings are much smaller. Anatomy-wise, bed bugs have 6 legs and short antennae that are segmented.

Fun fact: Dead bed bugs release a special odor that acts as a warning to other bed bugs about potential danger.

Places Where Bed Bugs Hide

Unlike most insects that build nests, bed bugs just crawl into places and live in groups. Their small flat body gives them a great advantage in finding residence inside small cracks and crevices around your home.

Initially, bed bugs will hide inside your mattress by burrowing a hole into the soft fabric. There they’ll stay hidden throughout the day and come out at night when you’re sleeping to feed on your blood.

Slowly, as the colony starts to grow, they’ll move on from the mattress and start taking refuge in your bedding. This can be inside your pillows, the pillowcase, bed covers, bed sheets, duvet, and so on.

As time goes by, they’ll travel beyond the bed and explore different nearby hiding spots. They especially love to hang around near old furniture, couches and sofa sets, carpets & rugs, cracks in the walls & floorboard, etc.

Overall, if something is soft enough to burrow into, or if it has cracks or ridges, a bed bug can hide or live inside it.

With this in mind, you want to thoroughly scan all the furniture around your home that’s soft like your mattress or has small cracks or indents.

Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation

Now that you know where to look for bed bugs, let’s talk about what to look for – the signs of a bed bug infestation.

That said, the most obvious sign you have bed bugs is if you see one on your bed or bedding or roaming around near a furniture or wall crack.

Besides this, you must also keep an eye out for potential clues bed bugs generally leave behind, signaling their presence. This includes the following:

You have blood stains on your bed sheet or mattress. This generally happens if you squash a feeding bed bug during your sleep.

You notice dark black spots on your bed sheet or mattress. These are bed bug fecal matter that they leave behind while feasting on your blood.

There are small flaky insect exoskeletons in the size and shape of bed bugs. As a bed bug matures to adulthood, they’ll shed their exoskeletons about five times.

There are eggs and egg casings near the places where bed bugs like to hide. It’s hard to tell whether the eggs are that of a bed bug or some other insect. That said, finding small pinpoint-sized eggs around your home is never a good sign.

If you notice these signs in different rooms, your home is infested with bed bugs.

How to Stop Bed Bugs From Spreading

As discussed, noticing bed bugs in one room doesn’t automatically mean that the insects have spread throughout the whole house. You might still have time to stop the spread and contain the bed bug infestation to just that room.

But how to do so?

Here are a few ways to stop bed bugs from spreading:

Don’t move anything out of the room. Since the main way bed bugs travel from one place to another is by latching onto things, restricting movement can help slow down the spread.

Wash the clothes and bedding that’s in that room separately. This will prevent the bed bugs from latching onto other items of clothing.

Wash your clothes in hot water and then dry them at the highest setting. Bed bugs will die within 20 mins if you expose them to 118°F. In case a particular fabric can’t be washed with hot water, see if you can dry them at a temperature higher than 118°F.

Wrap the mattress with an encasement. Covering the mattress with a bed bug-proof encasement like the Degrees of Comfort Mattress Encasement (available on Amazon) will lock the bed bugs inside, cutting them out of a food source and eventually starving them to death.

Use a steam cleaner to clean the floors of the infested room. A steam cleaner consistently releases hot steam and eradicates any bed bugs hiding inside the floorboard.

Use a vacuum cleaner to suck out the bed bugs in the mattress, headboard, or other furniture. Make sure to use a standard electric-powered vacuum cleaner because they have a stronger pull. Additionally, use one with a plastic hose since bed bugs can latch onto the ones that have brushes or bristles.

Cover up any cracks, dents, or seams you have on the walls. Bed bugs might be using these small spaces to hide or travel through your house. Covering them can limit their movement, reduce hide-out spots, and kill the ones already hiding in them.

Sleep inside the infested room. This might seem counterintuitive, but bed bugs need to feed on blood to survive. If you move to another room, they’ll leave the original room and spread across your home in search of a food source.

As you can see, containing a bed bug infestation in one room is no easy task. Not only do you have to go through this long list of preventive steps, but you also need to do many of these regularly.

It’s also important to take these preventive measures early while the bed bug population is still low.

However, if you tried following these steps to the best of your abilities but still found signs of bed bugs dwelling in other rooms in your household, you have a serious bed bug infestation in your home.

At this point, I’d refrain from trying any new DIY fixes as it’s extremely difficult to get rid of bed bugs by yourself. Instead, I’d recommend calling in a professional to help you out.

Conclusion

If one room has bed bugs, the critters have likely spread to other rooms as well.

Bed bugs will typically spread by latching onto your clothes, laundry, or pets and getting carried across your home.

They can also move quickly and will crawl through the narrow seams and cracks in the walls, electrical sockets, and piping to travel between rooms.

When managing bed bugs, recognizing the scent of these pests is important. Generally, the smell won’t become super apparent until you’re experiencing an infestation. However, you still want to know what they smell like and why they stink when you kill them.

Bed bugs smell when you kill them because they release a pheromone that alerts other bed bugs of their death. This reaction acts as a sort of warning for the group and is meant to help the other bugs escape danger.

In the rest of this article, I’ll go over what dead and live bed bugs smell like and the best way to detect these pests’ presence in your home. So, if you want to learn more about why bed bugs stink when you kill them, be sure to keep reading.

What Dead Bed Bugs Smell Like

Like a common stink bug, bed bugs give off a foul odor when threatened. As you can imagine, this odor is meant to deter predators and other potential threats. This warning smell can also go off when they’re killed, but what exactly does a dead bed bug smell like?

Dead bed bugs smell like a mix of musty and sweet. The scent may be milder when one or two bugs are killed. However, the more you kill, the more pungent the smell will be. This is because if you squish a bed bug, its scent glands get smashed and release all the smells contained within.

Ultimately, it’s not a pleasant smell, and squishing stink bugs can result in bloody stains on your furniture because bed bugs are full of the blood they feed on. In addition, these stains can add to the funk that accompanies these creatures.

What Live Bed Bugs Smell Like

So you’re probably wondering how the smell of live bed bugs compares to that of dead ones. Well, the scents have their similarities and differences. Bed bugs are pretty smelly when they come together in large numbers but can be harder to sniff out when there are just a few.

Live bed bugs are known to smell sweet or like cilantro. But in larger groups, they might smell like iron or dirty laundry. In addition, the scent can significantly change based on the number of bed bugs present. Therefore, using your nose to detect bed bugs is not the most effective method.

So if you detect a strange odor in your home, it’s always a good idea to check for these bugs since they can quickly get out of hand.

Large groups of bed bugs are often said to smell like:

Mildewed laundry

Stinky shoes

Blood

Rust

These scents indicate that many bed bugs may be in your home — and, most likely, your bed.

What a handful of bed bugs smell like:

Cilantro

Raspberries

Almonds

The Best Way to Detect Bed Bugs

Detecting bed bugs early is the key to preventing infestations. But it can be challenging to flush out the hiding places of these pests in your home. Luckily, I’ll be going over the best ways to detect bed bugs in your home.

Here’s how to find bed bugs hidden in your house:

Check your skin. If your skin has swollen and itchy bites on it, there’s a good chance bed bugs are nibbling on you at night.

Search your bedding for stains. Dried blood stains can signify bed bugs being squashed as you sleep at night.

Look for dark brown spots on fabrics. These spots are the bugs’ feces and can stain your bedding or other fabrics. The spots may look similar to a marker stain since they can bleed into fabrics a bit.

Look for signs of eggs. Bed bug eggs are tiny, white larvae-looking things. They tend to be laid in dark crevices.

Check under your mattress. Bed bugs hide under mattresses and other places where they feel they can remain undetected.

If you suspect a bed bug infestation, the best action is to call an exterminator immediately. Having bed bugs removed professionally is essential because these infestations can be challenging to fully eradicate, and the chemicals used can be pretty harsh.

Final Words

Bed bugs give off a foul smell when they’re killed because their scent glands have been crushed, and they’re excreting a warning smell to alert other bed bugs of danger. The smell can be unpleasant, like soiled laundry or blood.

Killing bed bugs can also result in unwanted stains since they’re generally full of blood, so it’s best to have them removed by a professional.

Small things like a toppled-over glass of orange juice to a night’s accident can be the reason for a wet mattress. Maybe you tripped on your way to breakfast on bed, or you left the window open during a storm. Be unlucky enough, and you might even manage to get your bed floating in a flood.

In this article, I’ll tell you how to dry your mattress, whether it’s a simple drink splash, a nightmare’s result, or an unfortunate pipe burst. Read on to learn more.

Eliminate the Source of Moisture

Before getting started, be sure to eliminate the source of moisture by following these steps:

Put away the spilled glass, close the overflowing faucet, or close the window to the storm.

Put away all the items that might be on the bed, including the pillows and sheets, and get the mattress somewhere dry.

Remove the bedding. It’s the first layer against the liquid and has most likely absorbed most of it.

Scoop off and dry off any excess water with a towel, pressing it down and drying it.

Discard the liquid in a bucket.

Repeat the process until there are no pools of water and the mattress is relatively dry to the touch or until a clean cloth doesn’t absorb any more water.

Ways to Dry a Wet Mattress

Then, it’s time to do something about the moisture in the inner layers. Here are a few options:

1. Apply Heat With a Hair Dryer

A hair dryer is excellent for small spills on the bed. If possible, prop the mattress up with some space behind it. Hold the hairdryer some distance from the bed and move it around for even drying. Do this for at least 15 minutes or even a couple of hours if necessary.

When using a hairdryer, there are two points to keep in mind:

Keep the hair dryer on low heat. Memory foam mattresses tend to have a more sensitive texture, so a continuous blast of hot air can damage their structure. Keep the hair dryer on low heat or even cold air. Cold air has a generally higher pressure and helps push out the moisture rather than evaporate it. You can push up the power if you’re in a hurry.

Keep your distance. Keeping the hair dryer too close to the mattress can damage the texture. It can also cause uneven drying since it locks the wind range on the bed. So for more even drying and minimal damage, keep at least a 10 to 12 inch (25 to 30 cm) distance from the mattress.

Before checking if your mattress is dry, make sure it has cooled down. Higher heat can give a false sense of dryness while the area is still quite wet. Similarly, coldness might provide a fake feeling of moisture.

2. Use Kitty Litter

Kitty litter will absorb moisture from deeper layers. Cover the wet area with a generous sprinkle of clean kitty litter and cover it with another towel for extra efficiency. Apply some pressure to push the litter down and absorb more moisture. Let it sit for up to 24 hours and vacuum the moist litter with either a wet-dry or regular vacuum.

3. Use Baking Soda

Baking soda is an excellent adsorbent that can suck up excess moisture from the deeper layers of the mattress. It also reduces unpleasant smells.

It works quite the same as the kitty litter but is more appropriate for smaller areas and spills. Cover the wet spot with baking soda, wait a few hours, and vacuum it up.

4. Use a Fan

If your mattress is wet throughout and the moisture has reached the opposite side, drying with a fan can be the best option.

To do this, prop your mattress up with a 3-foot (1 meter) distance from the wall or closed space to enable more airflow.

Direct the fan toward your mattress and set it on high. Even if your fan has automatic rotation, it’s best to keep at least 5 feet (1.5 meters) away, depending on the size and power of your fan. Move the fan around to make sure you get all the spots.

Don’t flip the mattress or put the fan behind it because it pushes the moisture out. So, changing the wind direction will push the water back in, which is counterproductive.

The drying process might take a couple of hours to days. So, be patient until all the moisture disappears.

Sometimes, you only have access to a ceiling fan. Although the situation isn’t ideal, not all hope is lost. In this case, you have to make sure the mattress is propped up. That means having it up from the ground at least 1.5 feet (0.5 meters). Make sure the bottom part isn’t covered as much as possible.

5. Put the Wet Mattress Under Sunlight

Drying your mattress in the sun is the traditional way of doing things, whether in the fresh air or just propped up against a chair in front of the window.

Although you won’t have the wind power of fans and hairdryers, the sun has natural disinfecting properties. It’s recommended to leave mattresses to air out in the sun as much as possible.

The location and season have a significant effect on how much sunlight you’ll have, which will also affect your drying time. As mentioned earlier, don’t forget to let the mattress cool down before checking the dryness.

How Long Does It Take for the Mattress to Dry?

The amount and type of liquid and how long the mattress has been exposed affect the drying time. If you’re dealing with a small spill of water, your bed can be ready to use in less than half a day. On the other hand, a soaked mattress can take up to a whole week to dry completely.

In most cases, you can clean up a child’s accident in a day, a night’s storm in a few days, and a dripping pipe burst in a week.

That said, if the exposure is considerable and you haven’t taken measures to fix the issue, the best approach is probably to throw the mattress away. Why?

Bacteria and mold begin to form a few hours into the accident, and by the second day, they’ve already spread to most parts of the mattress. As I’ll explain later, sleeping on a mold-infested mattress is dangerous and may lead to various health problems, including breathing difficulty, snoring, nasal congestion, insomnia, and blurred vision.

Can Mold Grow on Wet Mattresses?

Mold can grow on wet mattresses the same way it grows in all moist environments and rotten food. Other than mold, you should also beware of mildew, which is far more common.

Mildew is a surface-type fungus, meaning it doesn’t have deep roots. This makes it easy to remove with just a simple wipe. Mold, however, creeps into the mattress and spreads. It has a more fuzzy appearance, and removing it is far more complicated.

Other than having an unpleasant dank smell, mold spores can cause breathing problems and allergies. Headaches, exhaustion, and itchy eyes are also common symptoms. If these symptoms disappear a short while after you leave them, you should seek out the source since molding has already started.

How to Disinfect a Wet Mattress

Baking soda, sun drying, and wet-and-dry vacuum cleaning have disinfecting properties. But if you still feel the mattress needs more cleaning, here are a few tips:

Use an anti-bacterial aerosol or disinfectant spray. Make sure it doesn’t contain bleach since it damages the fabric.

Spray it on, let it sink a little, and give it time to dry. Don’t forget to get the corners, too.

To use a liquid disinfectant instead of a spray-on, use a rag and wipe it all over.

You can also make a DIY disinfectant spray using vinegar and baking soda.

These methods are best for surface-level disinfecting. If you’re suspicious of mold in the deeper levels of your mattress, either leave it to a professional or dispose of your mattress.

How to Dispose of Your Mattress

Sometimes, the damage is too much, and the mattress can’t be saved — whether it’s mold, a dense smell, or an over stubborn stain. You can dispose of, donate, or recycle your mattress in these situations.

Before you dispose of your mattress, make sure to check the warranty and the laws of your area.

Your warranty might not yet be expired, and the company may still be willing to give you a replacement mattress at a discount or cover some of your costs.

Some areas have laws against leaving large furniture or pieces of garbage outside your house, so you can contact a junk removal service to take care of your mattress for you. This usually comes with the cost of the rented workers and truck.

You can also donate your mattress. But please refrain from doing this if you think your mattress might contain mold or other types of health hazards.

Recycling a Dried Mattress

To prevent your mattress from ending up in a landfill, you can recycle it. You have two options: contacting a service or DIY.

You can find different places for recycling like the Mattress Recycling Council, finding a nearby recycling location, or asking your retailer about take-back services. Recycling usually costs far less than a junk removal service.

If you want to recycle the mattress on your own, start by taking apart the mattress and then cut the materials into smaller pieces.

Some parts might be easier to find recycling services for — like the springs, which can be reused as scrap metal, or the foam that can be converted into other by-products like carpet.

Some parts might even be usable in your household. For example, you can use the foam for a leak, the fabric as cloth, or the springs in the garage.

Other FAQs About Drying a Wet Mattress

Is a Mattress Ruined if It Gets Wet?

If a mattress gets wet, it’s not necessarily. A slightly damp mattress or a quickly dried one is still usable. However, if the mattress has been wet for more than 48 hours, mold and bacteria have already grown. In this case, keeping or drying the bed isn’t the safest approach.

If the water source was unclean, like a flood or a sewage malfunction, time doesn’t matter since the mattress is already unusable. You don’t want to sleep on such an infected mattress.

How Do You Dry a Mattress Quickly?

To quickly dry a mattress, take a towel or absorbent cloth and press it hard against the wet mattress to get as much moisture out as possible. Follow that with a hairdryer for about 15 minutes (or more if necessary) to get rid of the remaining water.

Can You Vacuum a Wet Mattress?

You can use a wet-dry vacuum to suck up more water from the deeper layers of your mattress or collect spills. Use the regular cleaning brush and vary the suction pressure until you have removed all the excess liquid.

Does Baking Soda Dry a Mattress?

Baking soda can be used to dry a mattress because it’s a highly effective absorbent. It’s especially effective when moisture has penetrated the inner layers but doesn’t work very well if the damage is extensive and the entire mattress is wet.

Key Takeaways

If your mattress gets wet, don’t panic! Grab a piece of cloth and press it against the mattress to absorb the water on the surface. Then, you can use kitty litter, baking soda, a wet-dry vacuum, or a fan to dry the moisture in the inner layers.

Don’t forget to disinfect and be careful with mold and bacteria growth since they can cause allergic reactions and other serious health issues.

As a last resort, you can always throw the mattress away or send it for recycling. However, there may be some costs involved.
