Removing a door latch or lock can leave behind unsightly holes that stand out, especially if you’re repainting or repurposing the door. Fortunately, filling door latch holes is a straightforward DIY project that requires only basic tools, common materials, and a bit of patience.

With the right preparation and technique, you can repair these holes so they blend seamlessly with the rest of the door surface. The steps below walk you through the process from start to finish, helping you achieve a smooth, paint-ready result.

1. Smooth the Hole and Surrounding Surface

Before filling a latch hole, it’s important to smooth the area so the filler can bond properly and dry evenly. Any raised paint, splinters, or rough edges will affect how clean the final repair looks.

Use medium-grit sandpaper (around 120–150 grit) to gently sand away loose paint and rough wood around the hole. Sand just enough to create a flat, even surface — there’s no need to remove more material than necessary.

If there are stubborn ridges or chipped edges, carefully scrape them away with a putty knife. Use light pressure and work slowly so you don’t gouge the surrounding wood. Taking your time here will make the filling and finishing steps much easier.

2. Remove Dust and Debris

After sanding and scraping, dust and paint particles often collect inside the latch hole and on the surrounding area. This debris can prevent the filler from adhering properly.

Use a vacuum to remove dust from the hole and door surface. A brush or narrow nozzle attachment works best for reaching inside the cavity. Once vacuumed, wipe the area with a slightly damp paper towel or cloth to remove any remaining residue.

Make sure the surface is completely dry before moving on to the filler.

3. Prepare Your Filler

Once the latch hole is clean and completely dry, it’s time to prepare the filler. The type of filler you choose depends mostly on the size and depth of the hole you’re repairing.

Common options include:

Wood filler, which works well for small to medium latch holes and surface-level repairs

Epoxy wood filler, which is stronger and better suited for deeper or wider holes that need extra durability

For example, if you’re filling a shallow latch hole left behind by a removed strike plate, a standard wood filler is usually sufficient. If the latch hole is deep or the wood around it is damaged or crumbly, an epoxy wood filler will provide a stronger, longer-lasting repair.

Some fillers come ready to use straight from the container, while others require mixing two components together before application. Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the packaging, as mixing ratios, working times, and drying times can vary between products.

If you’re using a two-part filler, mix only a small amount at a time. These fillers begin to harden shortly after mixing, so preparing too much at once can lead to wasted material. Work within the recommended time window to ensure the filler spreads easily and bonds properly.

Once the filler is mixed to the correct consistency and is still workable, you’re ready to move on to filling the latch hole.

4. Fill the Latch Hole

Use a putty knife to apply the filler to the latch hole. If you don’t have one, any flat, smooth-edged tool will work, such as:

a cut-up credit card

a paint stirrer

a ruler

a butter knife

Scoop a small amount of filler onto the tool and press it firmly into the hole. Start at the edges and work toward the center, pushing the filler deep into the cavity to eliminate air pockets that could weaken the repair.

For shallow holes, a single layer of filler is usually enough. For deeper latch holes, apply the filler in thin layers, pressing each layer firmly into place before adding more. Slightly overfill the hole so the filler sits just above the surface — this allows you to sand it perfectly flush once it dries.

After filling the hole, smooth the surface with your tool using light, even strokes. The flatter you make it at this stage, the less sanding you’ll need later.

If the hole is especially deep, allow the first layer to dry according to the product’s instructions before applying additional thin layers. Continue building up the filler until the surface is level with the surrounding door material.

5. Let the Filler Dry and Smooth the Surface

Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the recommended drying time and allow the filler to set fully before sanding. This ensures the repair hardens properly and doesn’t pull out of the hole.

While the filler is still slightly soft, you can gently wipe away small ridges or excess material with a damp paper towel or cloth. This step can save time later by reducing how much sanding is needed.

Once the filler has fully dried, it will usually change to a lighter, more uniform color. At this point, sand the area smooth using fine-grit sandpaper until it blends evenly with the surrounding door surface.

After sanding, you can apply primer and paint if needed to match the rest of the door and complete the repair.

Final Thoughts and Helpful Tips

Filling door latch holes doesn’t have to be complicated, and with the right approach, the repair can look nearly invisible once finished. Taking your time during each step — especially surface preparation and drying — will make a noticeable difference in the final result.

A few extra tips to keep in mind:

Always apply filler in thin layers rather than trying to fill deep holes all at once. This helps prevent shrinking and cracking as the filler dries.

Sand lightly and gradually. It’s easier to remove more material than to fix an area that’s been over-sanded.

If you plan to paint the door, applying a primer over the repaired area will help the paint blend evenly and prevent the patch from showing through.

For stained or natural wood doors, choose a stainable wood filler and test it on a small area first to check color matching.

With patience and attention to detail, filling a door latch hole is a manageable DIY task that can restore the door’s appearance and prepare it for its next use.

Things to Consider When Buying Screw Hole Repair Kits

First off, several products on the market could turn out to be useful to fix a stripped screw hole. However, the high number of models and kits might make a choice much more challenging, especially if you are sure which one is the best screw hole repair kit for your situation.

The Material You Are Dealing With

Before heading towards the nearest hardware shop, it is worth considering what material you are dealing with. If you need to fix a stripped screw hole in a wooden surface such as a table or door, you might need to buy a specific repair kit that allows you to conserve the look and quality of your furniture.

These repair kits, specifically designed for wooden surfaces, are easy to use and allow you to complete the process without having to be an expert in DIY. Wood repair kits are suitable for both screw holes and broken furniture, and they are made of epoxy, tinted to match the look of your wooden items.

Alternatively, if you need to fix a screw hole that is in a plastic or metal surface, and you need the screw to withstand increased weights, you should opt for products that are commercial-grade or tested for high-strength.

Indeed, picking the wrong repair kit if the screws are an integral part of the item’s structure might represent a health and safety hazard. And, of course, it can damage the furniture even further!

What Your Budget Is

Most repair kits on the market are suitable for any budget, cheap, and accessible. You might decide to buy them online and save a little more. This is only suitable if you are already confident with DIY, and you know what the best repair kit for your situation is.

Alternatively, you might decide to go to a hardware shop and speak to an expert. They can help you pick the product that suits your situation and the material you are dealing with. Such experts might also give you useful information on using your just-bought repair kit in the best way.

Generally, there is no real need to call in an expert to fix your stripped screw holes. Most DIY kits are readily usable for most surfaces and materials.

How Comfortable You Are With DIY

Screw hole repair kits are designed to be accessible and affordable by anybody, and they can be used to repair the majority of stripped screw holes. However, not all of them are so easily usable or include easy-to-follow instructions.

So, when you are picking the best screw hole repair kit for your situation, you should make sure that you can complete the whole process without running the risk of ruining the furniture.

If you have bought your repair kit online, you might also find tutorial videos for you to follow, such as this one.

If you prefer to purchase it from a store, speaking to an expert in the shop might help you get the guidance you need.

Alternative Solutions for Stripped Screw Holes

There are also other DIY options to repair your stripped screw holes that can help you in an emergency or when the nearest hardware shop is closed! Check out the easiest screw hole repair methods below.

Use a Different Screw

Using a different screw is the most obvious solution to implement. It might not offer you the professional, clean result that repair kits will provide. However, it can be an optimal way to keep your door working until your repair kit arrives!

For this method, everything you need is a longer — but not necessarily larger — screw than the one that was inserted before. Everything you will need to do is replace the old screw with the new one. Just make sure that the new screw can fit through the hole and reach the wood or other material that is still healthy.

As a test, you can proceed by checking whether the wood provides grip to the new screw. If it does, you can hand your door or home decoration!

Use Toothpicks to Fill the Hole

This DIY method for repairing a screw hole cannot be considered among the cleanest or elegant solutions. However, it can help you ensure that nothing will fall or that the panel behind will be subjected to further damage.

For this method, start by inserting one or more toothpicks (depending on the diameter of the hole) into the screw hole. Then, with scissors, a hammer, or your fingers, break the toothpicks off, so they are at the same level as the panel.

The toothpicks will fill the panel area that has been damaged and will provide additional grip to the screw. Now you can reinsert or replace the screw. You might need to try this method a few times until the toothpicks hold the screw in place.

Buy Plastic Anchors

Plastic anchors for wooden or drywall panels are among the easiest and most economical solutions to fix your screw holes.

Start by using a drill to create a larger and deeper hole exactly where the previous one was.

This step ensures that the internal surface of the hole that was damaged is removed. Once it is smooth and healthy, you can insert the anchor, and then the screw.

For a more precise result, you might also decide to use a countersink. For this, replace the drill bit with a larger countersink than the hole and slowly drill through the surface. Do so only for the first millimeters. This ensures that the crown on the anchor (which is larger than the body) can stay flushed to the surface below.

You can learn more about this screw hole fixing method in this video.

Use a Body Filler for Larger Holes

For larger holes, you might not be able to use a wood or drywall anchor. Indeed, these holes might be too large or caused by an excessive strain added on the nail. There might also be wall or panel damage to address.

So, to fix a larger hole, you might need to invest in a body filler or putty such as Bondo. This solution can be hand-mixed and will allow you to decide how strong you would like it to be.

If you are planning on reinserting the screw after fixing the hole, you will need to follow the steps below:

Create a larger hole by drilling through the existing hole.

Start pressing the body filler solution against the hole until it starts to fill it.

Lubricate a screw with a product such as WD-40.

Place the screw in the hole filled with body filler (you are creating a cast for the screw).

Add some body filler around the screw to seal it.

Wait for the solution to dry.

Remove the body filler in excess (the one around the screw).

Remove the screw.

Now you have a smaller hole that ensures a higher level of gripping on the new screw.

Make the Most Out of Wood Dowels

Anybody who has at least once taken a trip to Ikea has a few wooden dowels around the house. To fix your screw hole with these pieces, use a drill to create a hole through which they can fit. Make sure they are of the same length as the screw you wish to use.

Then, using a hammer, insert the dowels in the holes you have created. You will need to make sure that they are completely inserted and flush with the panel. Now you can reinsert the screws in the same place — benefiting from a new and integral wooden surface!

Concluding Thoughts

If you have noticed that one of the screws holding your doors or cabinets together has become loose, there is no need to call in a professional. Indeed, you can fix it yourself with minimal investment. Screw hole repair kits are designed to be used by anybody, regardless of your level of expertise.

However, when deciding on the best screw hole repair kit for your situation, you should be mindful of the material you are dealing with, your budget, and your DIY skills. Keeping these factors in mind allows you to complete the job without worrying about ruining your furniture!

In a well-designed kitchen, sometimes the best feature is the one you don’t even notice.

A concealed pantry door, also known as a hidden or integrated pantry door, is the ultimate blend of form and function. It keeps your pantry discreetly tucked away while maintaining the clean, uninterrupted flow of your cabinetry or wall design.

You might be aiming for a minimalist look, trying to make the most of a small space, or simply adding a creative design element. No matter the goal, a hidden pantry door brings both beauty and utility to your kitchen.

Below, we explore the most popular styles, smart design ideas, and tips to help you hide your pantry in plain sight.

What Is a Concealed Pantry Door?

A concealed pantry door is a hidden or camouflaged entrance to your pantry that blends seamlessly with the surrounding wall, cabinetry, or architectural elements.

These doors often match your kitchen cabinets, mimic wall paneling, or are built into shelving units, making the pantry practically invisible unless you know where to look.

This approach is ideal for both walk-in and reach-in pantries and is often used in modern, transitional, and minimalist kitchens where visual simplicity and clean lines are a priority.

Hidden Pantry Door Ideas

1. Cabinet-Front Pantry Door

One of the most popular and seamless concealed pantry door styles, the cabinet-front pantry door is designed to look like part of your regular kitchen cabinetry. It’s typically crafted to match your cabinet fronts in color, material, hardware, and scale, so it blends in flawlessly with the rest of your kitchen.

When closed, it may appear to be a tall pantry cupboard or an appliance panel, but it opens into a walk-in or reach-in pantry behind the scenes. Depending on your layout, you can opt for single or double doors, or even a faux cabinet panel that swings open.

To truly sell the illusion:

Use continuous lines and matching crown molding.

Consider a push-to-open mechanism to eliminate the need for visible handles.

Integrate it beside your fridge or tall oven tower for a natural visual break.

Best for: Seamless design integration in modern, transitional, or traditional kitchens that prioritize symmetry and clean cabinetry lines.

2. Wall Paneling or Shiplap Door

If your kitchen includes shiplap walls, wood paneling, beadboard, or vertical slats, your pantry door can be perfectly camouflaged by continuing those materials across the entrance. These types of hidden doors create a clean, uninterrupted architectural feature while still providing full access to storage.

This method is often paired with a touch latch system so the door opens with a light push — no handles, hinges, or frames to give it away. You can also install subtle vertical grooves or custom millwork to break up the wall rhythmically, disguising where the pantry entrance begins.

To pull it off well:

Align all panels or boards perfectly between the wall and door.

Paint the door the same exact shade (and finish) as the wall.

Keep baseboards and crown molding unbroken across the entire wall, including the door.

Best for: Creating a minimalist, cottage, or coastal-style feature wall with hidden functionality.

3. Bookshelf Door or Hidden Sliding Panel

For a bit of drama and surprise, turn your pantry door into a faux bookshelf or art-covered sliding panel. When closed, it looks like a decorative feature filled with cookbooks, framed art, or even wine bottles, but it cleverly conceals a fully functional pantry behind it.

A hidden bookshelf door can be hinged or pivoted, while a sliding panel can move along a barn-style or recessed track. These designs work especially well in open-concept layouts or where your pantry backs onto a dining room or hallway, rather than traditional kitchen cabinetry.

To take the concept further, you can incorporate interior lighting that automatically turns on when the door opens, making it both practical and visually impressive. Or maybe install magnetic locks to add an extra layer of security or simply helps keep curious hands at bay, ensuring your hidden pantry remains both stylish and discreet.

Best for: Statement-making kitchens, open layouts, or homes where the pantry adjoins a living space and you want to turn the entrance into a talking point.

4. Appliance-Matching Pantry Door

In high-end kitchens with integrated appliance walls, your pantry door can be cleverly disguised to match built-in refrigerators, freezer columns, or tall oven units. This creates a cohesive, uninterrupted look where every vertical surface appears to serve the same purpose until, one panel opens to reveal a hidden pantry.

To achieve this polished look:

Use the same cabinet panels and appliance-style handles that appear on your fridge or freezer.

Align door heights and widths so the pantry blends naturally into the appliance bank.

Consider touch-to-open or recessed pulls for a handle-free option.

This type of design works especially well in kitchens where the pantry is adjacent to or within the main cabinet line. It’s a sleek way to hide everyday items without breaking the streamlined, built-in aesthetic.

Best for: Luxury kitchens or modern spaces with a fully integrated design scheme and flush cabinetry.

5. Pocket Door or Sliding Door Hidden in Trim

A pocket door is one of the most space-saving concealed pantry options, especially useful in smaller kitchens or narrow walkways where a swinging door might get in the way. The door slides into the wall cavity, making it disappear completely when open.

To make it truly “invisible,” finish the door in the same color, trim, or paneling as the surrounding wall. You can also use a simple groove or finger pull rather than traditional handles for a more discreet look.

If space allows, a double pocket door can provide a wider opening, perfect for walk-in pantries. Pocket doors also work well as transitions between the kitchen and adjacent utility rooms or storage areas, maintaining a smooth, unobtrusive flow throughout the home.

Best for: Compact kitchens, galley layouts, or spaces where door clearance is an issue.

6. Mirror or Chalkboard Pantry Door

Want to add functionality and personality? Turn your pantry door into a mirror, chalkboard, whiteboard, or art panel. This approach conceals your pantry while giving you a practical surface that is ideal for writing grocery lists, weekly menus, reminders, or even doodles.

A full-length mirror helps brighten small kitchens and visually expands the space. A chalkboard or dry-erase board creates an interactive element that’s great for kids, meal planners, or busy households.

Creative variations:

Frame the board or mirror in the same trim as your cabinetry or wall paneling to help it blend in.

Use magnetic chalkboard paint behind the panel for additional function.

Try a gallery-style door with rotating art prints or family photos to keep the look fresh.

Best for: Family-friendly kitchens, multi-use spaces, or anyone who wants hidden storage with a functional twist.

7. Flush Hidden Door With No Trim or Handle

For a truly minimalist and architectural look, a flush hidden door offers complete visual simplicity. This type of door sits perfectly level with the surrounding wall (no trim, no molding, no visible hinges) and typically uses a push-latch mechanism so there’s no need for a handle.

When closed, the door blends into the surface like a chameleon, making your pantry disappear into the background. It’s a favorite among architects and designers working with modern, monochromatic, or high-end minimalist interiors.

Design notes:

Works beautifully with flat wall panels, painted drywall, or even concrete or stone veneer.

Best paired with shadow gaps or minimalist baseboards to maintain crisp transitions.

Use high-quality concealed hinges to ensure perfect alignment and durability over time.

Best for: Modern, minimalist, or gallery-style kitchens where visual simplicity is paramount.

8. French Door Disguise

For a touch of elegance that still keeps your pantry partially hidden, try using French doors disguised as tall cabinet panels. Use frosted, reeded, or opaque glass to blur the contents inside while keeping the lightness and charm that French doors are known for.

The beauty of this option lies in its versatility: the doors can swing outward or inward, and you can choose the level of opacity depending on how much you want to reveal. With matching hardware and adjacent cabinet finishes, they blend into a traditional or transitional kitchen effortlessly.

To elevate the look, you might add LED backlighting or glass shelves inside the pantry to create a subtle glow. Coordinating the glass finish with other kitchen elements (such as cabinet inserts or pendant lights) can help unify the space and enhance the overall design.

Best for: Elegant, transitional, or European-inspired kitchens that want classic charm with functional concealment.

9. Hidden Pantry Under the Stairs

For homes with staircases backing onto or near the kitchen, that often-overlooked triangular space can be transformed into a hidden pantry. Use custom millwork to cover the opening with wall panels, sliding doors, or even a faux bookshelf, turning an awkward nook into a clever storage solution.

Depending on the depth available, this space can serve as a compact reach-in pantry with shelving or be expanded into a small walk-in area. To maintain a discreet appearance, the door can be finished to match existing trim, paneling, or wall paint, allowing it to blend in seamlessly with the surroundings.

Smart upgrades, such as pull-out pantry drawers or rotating shelves, help maximize the utility of tight quarters, while motion-sensor lighting adds convenience, especially in dimly lit or enclosed spaces.

Best for: Compact homes, open-concept layouts, or kitchens in need of creative space-saving solutions.

10. Pivot Door Pantry

A pivot door adds instant architectural flair to your pantry. Unlike traditional hinged doors, pivot hinges are set at the top and bottom of the door, allowing it to rotate smoothly on a vertical axis. The result? A pantry door that swings open in a dramatic, almost floating fashion.

This style is ideal for wide or oversized doors and works well with flush walls, slab wood panels, or even metal-clad surfaces. When closed, it can align perfectly with adjacent walls or cabinetry, maintaining a sleek appearance.

This style stands out by bringing a sculptural, modern vibe to the kitchen. It’s especially effective in spaces with tall ceilings or expansive feature walls, where the door’s unique motion and scale can have maximum visual impact. Depending on the material and finish, a pivot door can either blend in for a minimalist look or serve as a bold statement piece.

Best for: High-design or architectural kitchens that want both functionality and a showstopping design element.

Tips for Designing a Concealed Pantry Door

Designing a hidden pantry isn’t just about making it invisible but also ensuring it functions just as beautifully as it looks. Here are some expanded tips to help you pull off a concealed pantry door that’s both practical and polished:

Use continuous materials:
Seamlessness is key. Whether your door is built into cabinetry, wall paneling, drywall, or shiplap, using the exact same material and finish for the door and surrounding surfaces is what makes it “disappear.”
→ Match cabinet fronts, align panel grooves, and ensure uniform paint sheen for a flawless look.

Avoid bulky hardware:
Large knobs, hinges, or pulls will instantly give away your secret. Instead, choose concealed hinges, magnetic push-to-open latches, or finger pulls routed into the door edge. These subtle mechanisms keep the door streamlined and unobtrusive.
→ Bonus: touch-latch doors are great for hands-free access when cooking.

Maintain function:
While the goal is concealment, don’t sacrifice usability. A hidden door should open easily, close securely, and never obstruct foot traffic or adjacent cabinetry.
→ Pocket, pivot, or soft-close mechanisms work well depending on your kitchen layout. Test your door swing path before installation.

Layer lighting:
Strategically placed lighting can draw the eye away from the pantry entrance while highlighting other design elements. Consider under-cabinet LEDs, sconces, or overhead pendant lighting to guide attention toward open shelves or statement pieces.
→ Inside the pantry, add motion-activated lights to boost visibility and enhance the reveal.

Think about framing:
The trim — or lack of it — plays a huge role in concealment. Use flush baseboards, frameless jambs, or even continuous crown molding that runs right over the door to keep the sightline uninterrupted.
→ For a more modern look, skip trim altogether and go with a flush-set slab door for a gallery-wall effect.

Consider glass if you want semi-visibility:
Frosted, ribbed, or reeded glass pantry doors offer a unique middle ground between hidden and open storage. They maintain a light, airy look while subtly obscuring the contents inside.
→ Curious about glass pantry doors? Explore more design ideas here.

Who Should Consider a Concealed Pantry?

A hidden pantry door is a highly functional solution for many types of kitchens and homeowners. Here’s who benefits most from integrating a concealed pantry:

Small kitchens with limited visual space:
In compact kitchens, open shelving or visible pantry doors can make the space feel busy. A concealed pantry door helps visually declutter the room, allowing the rest of the design to shine.

Minimalist and modern homes:
If your style leans toward clean lines, simplicity, and architectural balance, a hidden door blends right in. It maintains the minimalist flow of your space without compromising storage needs.

Luxury and custom-built kitchens:
High-end kitchens often emphasize integration and seamlessness, where even appliances and storage are hidden. A concealed pantry adds to that sophistication, offering both convenience and design continuity.

Busy families with messy zones:
Let’s face it, not every pantry is Pinterest-ready every day. A hidden pantry door allows you to keep the “lived-in” side of life tucked away, without constant upkeep or styling.

Entertainers and open-concept homes:
If your kitchen is part of an open living area, a concealed pantry can keep the backdrop tidy and consistent while guests are over. It creates a streamlined aesthetic, especially during dinner parties or holidays when presentation matters.

Final Thoughts

A concealed pantry door is a beautiful way to create visual harmony and make your kitchen feel more streamlined and intentional. From sleek modern spaces to cozy farmhouse kitchens, hidden pantry doors can be tailored to suit any style.

And the best part? It’s not just for show. Hidden pantries are fully functional, often easier to organize, and offer the joy of surprising guests with a “secret” room behind a wall or cabinet.

Ready to hide your pantry in plain sight? With the right materials and layout, your pantry can disappear completely — until you need it.

A pantry door might seem like a small feature, but with the right style, it can transform the feel of your entire space. Glass pantry doors are one such upgrade — blending design, function, and personality in a single statement piece.

But before you commit to transparency, it’s worth exploring what glass pantry doors truly offer beyond just aesthetics. Let’s break down the pros, cons, and design tips to help you decide if they’re the right fit for your kitchen.

Advantages of Choosing a Glass Pantry Door

Let’s start by taking a closer look at the many benefits of incorporating a glass pantry door into your home.

1. Aesthetic Appeal

Glass pantry doors instantly add elegance and openness to a kitchen. They can be customized with frosted, etched, or clear finishes to complement any design style — from farmhouse rustic to sleek contemporary. Their clean lines and reflective surfaces elevate the visual appeal of the space, creating a refined focal point.

2. Visual Accessibility

One of the greatest benefits of glass doors is that they allow you to see what’s inside without opening them. This can help with inventory management, reducing the chances of overbuying or forgetting what you have. It’s also a handy way to quickly check if you’re running low on essentials.

3. Enhanced Light Flow

Glass doors allow natural and artificial light to pass through, making smaller or darker kitchens feel more open and bright. This is especially useful in galley kitchens or layouts where the pantry is located in a darker corner of the room.

4. Customization Options

From stained and frosted glass to panels etched with decorative text or patterns, there’s a wide range of options to make your pantry door truly unique. You can personalize the glass to match your kitchen’s theme or even include fun decals like “Pantry” or botanical motifs.

5. Creates a Sense of Openness

Unlike solid doors, glass doesn’t visually divide the space. This can make your kitchen feel larger and more connected, particularly in open-concept layouts. It’s a great trick for maximizing the sense of space without knocking down walls.

6. Showcases Your Organization

If you’re proud of your neatly arranged dry goods, matching containers, or labeled jars, glass doors let you show off your pantry organization in style. A well-organized pantry behind glass can serve as a design element in its own right.

7. Easy to Coordinate With Existing Decor

Glass is a neutral material that blends well with virtually any color palette or cabinetry style. Whether your kitchen leans traditional, industrial, or ultra-modern, a glass pantry door can integrate seamlessly without clashing.

8. Adds Property Appeal

Well-designed glass pantry doors can elevate the perceived value of your kitchen, which is often a major selling point in real estate. Buyers appreciate thoughtful design details, and a chic pantry door can help leave a lasting impression.

The Drawbacks of Glass Pantry Doors

While glass pantry doors offer undeniable charm and versatility, they aren’t without drawbacks. For some homeowners, the same qualities that make them attractive can also introduce challenges in terms of maintenance, privacy, and practicality.

Before deciding to install one in your kitchen, it’s worth weighing the potential downsides to determine if glass is truly the right fit for your lifestyle.

1. Requires Tidy Shelving

Since glass doors reveal the contents of your pantry, organization becomes key. If you’re someone who tends to stash groceries haphazardly, clear glass might not be the best choice. Messy shelves become part of the kitchen’s visual landscape and can detract from the room’s overall design.

2. Maintenance

Glass shows fingerprints, smudges, and dust more easily than wood or solid doors. You’ll need to clean them regularly to keep them looking their best, especially in high-traffic kitchens or homes with children. Smudged glass can quickly shift the look from chic to shabby if neglected.

3. Privacy Concerns

Not everyone wants their pantry contents on display. While frosted or textured glass offers a level of privacy, it may still reveal silhouettes or darker items inside. If discretion is a priority for you, solid doors may provide more peace of mind.

4. Potential for Breakage

Though tempered glass is engineered for safety and durability, it’s still glass. There’s always a small risk of scratching or shattering, particularly in homes with young children, pets, or heavy kitchen traffic. Repairs can also be more expensive and time-consuming than replacing a standard wooden panel.

5. Style Limitations in Certain Spaces

While glass doors can be very adaptable, they may not suit every kitchen style. For example, in very rustic or ultra-traditional homes, glass may feel out of place or overly modern — unless carefully balanced with matching materials and accents.

6. Cost Considerations

Depending on the type of glass and customization involved (like etching, framing, or specialty finishes), glass pantry doors can be more expensive than standard wooden or MDF doors. Homeowners working with a tight renovation budget may find them less practical.

7. Heat and Glare

In kitchens that get a lot of natural light, clear glass can reflect sunlight in a way that causes glare or additional heat buildup. This might not be a major issue, but it’s something to consider if your pantry is located near a sunny window.

Are Glass Pantry Doors Worth It?

After weighing the pros and cons, the question remains: are glass pantry doors truly worth the investment? The answer depends on your lifestyle, design preferences, and willingness to maintain both the door and the pantry behind it.

For those who prioritize aesthetics and enjoy maintaining a tidy space, glass pantry doors can be a standout feature. They lend elegance and lightness to a kitchen, and when paired with thoughtful organization, they transform a basic storage area into a stylish visual element. In modern, open-concept kitchens, a well-designed glass door can enhance the flow of natural light and tie together the overall decor.

However, homeowners who prefer low-maintenance materials or need to keep clutter out of sight may find the drawbacks less appealing. Frequent cleaning, the need for organization, and potential privacy concerns are valid considerations.

Cost can also be a determining factor. While basic clear glass doors may be relatively affordable, custom designs, specialty finishes, and installation can add up quickly. But for many, the added visual appeal and functionality justify the investment.

The verdict?

Glass pantry doors are worth it if you’re aiming to elevate your kitchen design and don’t mind a little extra upkeep. With the right style and thoughtful planning, they can add long-term beauty and utility to your space. If privacy or mess is a concern, opting for frosted or textured glass can give you the best of both worlds — style with subtlety.

Styling Your Glass Pantry Door: Practical Design Tips

Incorporating a glass pantry door into your kitchen design isn’t just about choosing a material but creating a visual and functional feature. Here are some practical and creative tips to help you make the most of your glass pantry door.

1. Choose the Right Type of Glass

If privacy is a concern, opt for frosted, ribbed, seeded, or etched glass to obscure pantry contents while still allowing light through. For a clean, modern look, clear glass offers full visibility and a sleek finish. Textured or patterned glass provides a balanced option — stylish, semi-private, and eye-catching.

2. Coordinate With Kitchen Style

Your glass pantry door should complement the overall style of your kitchen. Match the frame material and color with your cabinetry or trim for visual harmony. Black-framed glass works beautifully in modern, industrial, or minimalist spaces, while natural wood frames lend a cozy, traditional feel to farmhouse or cottage-style kitchens.

3. Think About Functionality

Choose a door type that suits the flow of your kitchen. Swinging glass doors are classic, but in tight spaces, sliding barn-style doors or pocket doors can be more practical. Pocket doors tuck away when open, offering a streamlined, space-saving solution, while barn doors add charm and personality.

4. Add Labels or Designs

Make your pantry door pop with custom elements. Vinyl decals, etched lettering, or stenciled designs like “Pantry,” “Dry Goods,” or decorative flourishes bring a personal touch and can clarify the door’s purpose, especially in open-concept layouts.

5. Use Interior Lighting

Lighting inside the pantry can dramatically enhance the look of a glass door. Soft LED strips or motion-activated lights improve visibility, highlight organization, and add a welcoming glow that doubles as ambient lighting in the evening.

6. Frame It Creatively

Beyond basic metal or wood, consider unique frame styles like arched tops, divided panes, or French-style grids to add architectural interest. Framing can dramatically affect the visual weight and character of your glass door.

7. Accessorize With Hardware

Don’t overlook handles and hinges. Sleek brass or matte black hardware can add a pop of contrast or tie in with your kitchen’s faucet and lighting fixtures. Consistent finishes across cabinetry and pantry hardware help create a polished look.

8. Think About What’s Behind the Glass

Since what’s inside the pantry will be at least partially visible, consider using matching jars, baskets, or storage bins to keep things tidy and visually appealing. Even frosted glass benefits from clean, cohesive storage behind it.

9. Balance With Other Elements

If you’re adding a glass pantry door, consider balancing it with other transparent or reflective elements in the kitchen like glass cabinet inserts, mirrored backsplashes, or open shelving to create a cohesive visual rhythm.

Final Thoughts and Tips

Glass pantry doors offer a smart way to blend aesthetics with everyday function. They can brighten up a dark corner, showcase your perfectly organized shelves, or simply add a touch of elegance to your kitchen. But like any design decision, success lies in the details.

Before you install a glass pantry door, here are a few final tips to keep in mind:

Plan your pantry layout: Use matching jars, baskets, or labels to keep your storage visually appealing, especially if you’re using clear or semi-transparent glass.

Think long-term: Opt for tempered or safety glass to ensure durability, especially in busy households.

Consider a hybrid approach: If you love the look of glass but want occasional privacy, think about pairing your door with an interior curtain, window film, or sliding panel for added flexibility.

Create a seamless look: If you’re aiming to make your door flush with the wall or hidden like a cabinet, check out our article for more creative ideas.

Don’t forget the frame and hardware: These small elements can dramatically change the vibe of your door. Go modern with matte black, classic with polished brass, or rustic with distressed wood.

In the end, glass pantry doors are a worthwhile option for those ready to embrace both their beauty and the extra care they require.

The door latch is one of the most essential components of a functioning door. If your door latch isn’t retracting properly, there could be several underlying causes — but the good news is that most of them are relatively easy to fix.

Common culprits include a broken spindle, loose door knobs, a misaligned strike plate, or debris causing a jam. Fortunately, these are all issues you can often resolve yourself. You might need to replace the spindle, tighten the knobs, or realign the strike plate to get things working again.

Tip: A latch can sometimes be fixed by gently jiggling the doorknob, especially if the latch won’t extend or retract. Avoid forcing it, as that could worsen the issue.

Let’s take a closer look at these potential problems and walk through some practical solutions to help you get your door back in proper working order.

1. Faulty Internal Mechanism

What’s the Problem

You may be dealing with a faulty internal mechanism if you notice that the door latch is stuck or won’t retract. This is especially common with older latches as they age, and we use them regularly. However, it can also happen to new latches if we don’t install them correctly.

The internal mechanism of your door latch can easily become stuck if you do not install it properly. Whether it is a broken spindle or something else broken, many things can go wrong with a door knob and cause the latch to not retract. These issues can be difficult to diagnose if you don’t know what to look for.

If your door latch just doesn’t budge, you may be dealing with a broken or faulty spindle. A spindle is an important metal piece connecting the latch to the door handle. It allows the door to function properly by making the latch respond to the doorknob turning. If it is broken or faulty, then the door latch will no longer respond to the turn of the knob.

How to Fix

If the problem is a broken or damaged spindle, you can fix it. You will need to replace it with a new spindle. You can buy them individually without purchasing an entirely new door knob kit. Once you have the replacement spindle, here’s how to replace it:

Start with an opened door, as this won’t work with a closed door

Unscrew and remove both door knobs

Once the door knobs are off, you will see the broken or damaged spindle

Remove the old spindle being careful to get every piece if it breaks

Replace it with the new spindle

Reattach both knobs

Loosen or tighten the knobs as needed to make sure the spindle is tight

Once you complete the above steps, your door latch should work as new again. If the problem was not a broken spindle, we have some further recommendations on what could be wrong.

2. Jammed

What’s the Problem

If your door latch doesn’t move with or without the aid of the doorknob, then you may want to consider a jam. Many things can build up inside the mechanism, causing it to no longer retract. This is especially relevant for older door latches as they tend to gather rust and other debris over time.

You may wonder how rust or other materials can collect on the interior of your door latch. As they are metal, they can rust with exposure to water. So, if your door is leading outside or in an area that is prone to getting wet, rust is probably the culprit.

If this is an interior door, then rust is less likely, but still not impossible. You may also want to consider dust or random debris getting stuck there. If you have kids or have some occasionally visit your home, it is always possible that there is now something inside the latch mechanism.

How to Fix

If there is a jam causing your door latch to no longer work, then you can most likely fix it yourself, assuming there is no major damage. If you think rust is the problem, consider applying WD-40 to the door latch. Make sure you coat the entire latch and try to get as much as possible inside of it too.

Let the WD-40 dry for about 30 minutes and reapply two or three times if needed. After the third application, you should notice a major difference in how the latch responds to you. You probably aren’t dealing with rust if you don’t see any difference.

If you are dealing with dust or something jammed inside of the latch, you should take the door latch apart. Start by removing the door handle, then remove the door latch. You can only see inside some of the mechanisms even after removing them. Use this opportunity to clear out any dust or debris, then replace the latch and test it.

3. The Door Latch and Strike Plate Are Not Aligned

What’s the Problem

If your door latch doesn’t retract only when you try to open a closed door rather than all the time, you may have an issue with the alignment. The strike plate on your door is the metal piece screwed to your door frame that holds the latch when you close the door.

When you install a strike plate, you align it with the door knob. Over time, it can become unaligned due to changes in the door frame. A wooden door frame may expand with weather changes or as it gets wet, which can cause the strike plate to no longer align with the latch.

Sometimes, this issue can cause your door not to latch properly when you close it. If you’ve ever had to adjust the knob position slightly, it was most likely caused by this. However, this misalignment can also cause you to struggle to open the door, making it seem like a stuck latch.

In this case, it is not a problem with the latch at all. What is happening is that the movement of the strike plate causes the door latch to fall into the strike plate incorrectly. While it still allows the door to close, the friction of metal on metal can make it very difficult for the latch to retract. This can make it seem like a bigger problem when friction is actually the main culprit.

How to Fix

There are a few different possible solutions for this problem. First, you should consider applying some sort of lubricant like WD-40. This will help prevent friction when closing the door and allow you to open it more easily. Spray a generous amount on both the door latch and the strike plate.

This creates a temporary albeit effective solution. However, you should consider further repairs to prevent this from happening again in the future. One thing to consider is why this is happening. Most of the time, a moving or misaligned strike plate happens when a door or door frame expands or contracts due to weather changes or getting wet.

Of course, we can’t stop these things from happening as these are natural occurrences over time. However, there are a few ways to keep this under control. First, you can move the strike plate to match the new alignment. This may be a temporary solution as the door frame may continue to shift as it expands and retracts.

Alternatively, we recommend considering a different type of wood for your door that is not as easily affected by the climate. Of course, this is a costly and major change to your home. So, it may not be an option for everyone. However, this is the most effective solution if you want a long-term fix to strike plate misaligning.

4. Sticky Mechanism

What’s the Problem

Sometimes when things get stuck, it is simply because they have come in contact with something sticky. This can be the case with a door latch mechanism. If you frequently use the door, sticky material left on your hands can become part of the doorknob, latch, or strike plate.

This is especially likely if the door latch still works occasionally, but you have to put a lot of force behind it. The latch may hesitate to move and then snap into place quickly. If this happens, there is probably a substance on or in the door mechanism, making it stick.

This can happen when you use the door while working with stuck materials. It may also happen if you attempt to do any repairs by the door that require sticky substances. As the substance dries or hardens, it will have more of an effect on the door latch.

How to Fix

If you find yourself in this sticky situation, the first thing you want to do is get it unstuck. You can do this by trying multiple times to turn the knob. If this doesn’t work, then lightly tap the door latch with a hammer to free it. Sometimes freeing the latch and opening it repeatedly is enough to fix it.

If opening and closing the latch repeatedly did not fix the problem, you should consider taking apart the mechanism and cleaning it. It is not enough to apply a lubricant this time, as it may not react well to being mixed with whatever sticky substance is in there. So, take apart the doorknob and clean it fully to remove any substance that may cause it to be sticky.

To keep this from happening again, make sure you clean the door knob, latch, and strike plate regularly. This will help prevent sticky substances from drying and causing latch issues before it gets bad enough to stick again.

5. Faulty Door Knob

What’s the Problem

Finally, if the above problems and solutions do not help you figure out why your door latch won’t retract, you may be dealing with a faulty door knob. You can test this pretty easily by attempting to push in the door latch without turning the knob. If the latch goes in easily with a push but doesn’t move when you turn the knob, you most likely have an issue with the knob.

This could mean a simple problem like loose screws, or it could indicate something bigger like a faulty knob. It can be difficult to diagnose this issue without trying multiple fixes first. So, let’s discuss what you can do to determine if your door knob is the problem.

How to Fix

First, try tightening the screws around your door knob. If they are too loose, then they will not come in contact with the spindle and, therefore, won’t allow the latch to move. Remember, only tighten the door knobs as much as you need to. If the knobs are too tight, you may not be able to turn them, or you may break or bend the spindle.

If tightening the knob doesn’t fix the problem, you may need to get a new system. Each of the above solutions allows you to fix the problem with minimal cost, but you can’t fix everything. If something is wrong with the knobs or the internal mechanism that allows the knobs to work, you may be better off buying and installing a new system.

Consider the Warranty

Always check with the manufacturer if you decide to replace the knob. It is very common for manufacturers to provide long warranties for their door knob mechanisms. Some even provide a lifetime warranty. So, no matter how long ago you purchased the mechanism, always contact the manufacturer to see if it is still under warranty.

If it is under warranty, the company will most likely provide you with a replacement or with a missing or broken part that you need for no cost. This can help prevent you from spending more money on a new set. So, call the manufacturer and explain the problem you are experiencing. They may just give you a new one for free.

Final Thoughts

If your door latch won’t retract, there are many different possible reasons. Thankfully, most of them are fixable and won’t cost you a lot of money. Try some of our above solutions before you go searching for a new door knob set to help save you some time, hassle, and money.

Also, don’t forget to contact the manufacturer, as door knobs tend to have a long warranty period. This can also help save you money in the long run.

Traditional closet doors often take up space or lack character, but there’s no need to settle for ordinary.

With so many innovative alternatives available, you can find a solution that fits your needs while enhancing the look and feel of your room. From practical options like pocket doors that save space to creative ideas like chalkboard panels or repurposed vintage shutters, your closet can become a stylish and functional part of your home.

1. Curtains and Drapes

Replacing closet doors with curtains or drapes is an easy and stylish way to add softness and personality to your space. With endless options in colors, patterns, and textures, curtains can seamlessly blend with your existing decor or create a bold statement that makes your closet stand out.

Imagine sheer white curtains flowing in a breezy, coastal-inspired room or the luxurious depth of velvet drapes in a cozy, bohemian setting. Curtains are not only simple to install but also incredibly flexible — you can easily swap them out to match the season or refresh your space as your style evolves.

This approach works particularly well in casual, eclectic, or bohemian interiors, where the movement and texture of fabric add warmth and a relaxed, inviting feel.

2. Rolling Shades

Rolling shades, commonly used for windows, offer a sleek and minimalist alternative to traditional closet doors. Made from materials like fabric, bamboo, or synthetic blends, these shades roll up and down effortlessly, providing a clean and simple way to conceal your wardrobe.

Their compact design makes them ideal for small spaces where maximizing every inch of floor and wall space is crucial. For a modern look, choose neutral-toned or patterned shades that complement your room’s aesthetic. If you prefer a more natural feel, bamboo shades add warmth and texture, making them a great choice for earthy, organic designs.

With rolling shades, simplicity meets functionality, offering a streamlined and space-efficient solution that works beautifully in minimalist and space-conscious homes.

3. Barn Doors

Barn doors offer a striking and functional alternative to traditional closet doors, making a bold design statement while enhancing the character of any room. Mounted on a sliding rail above the closet, they bring a rustic charm that blends seamlessly with various interior styles.

Whether made from distressed wood for a farmhouse-inspired look or sleek panels with metal accents for a modern touch, barn doors are incredibly versatile. They complement everything from industrial lofts to cozy cottages and even contemporary spaces that incorporate natural textures.

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, barn doors are highly practical. Since they slide to the side rather than swinging open, they help save valuable floor space — an ideal solution for smaller rooms. This blend of style and functionality makes barn doors a timeless and eye-catching choice for any home.

4. Open Shelving

If you’re aiming for a clean and modern look, replacing your closet doors with open shelving can transform your storage space into a stylish, curated display that enhances your room’s decor.

The key to making open shelving work is organization. Neatly folded sweaters, color-coordinated clothing, or elegantly arranged shoes can serve as both functional storage and design elements that reflect your personal style. This setup not only highlights your belongings but also creates a more open, airy feel, making the room appear larger and brighter.

Open shelving is especially well-suited for small spaces or industrial-inspired interiors, where its raw, minimalist design blends seamlessly with urban aesthetics.

5. Accordion Doors

Accordion doors are a smart, space-saving solution for closets, especially in smaller rooms where maximizing every inch matters. These foldable doors neatly collapse to one side, allowing easy access without taking up extra space.

Available in a range of materials, including wood, vinyl, and fabric, accordion doors can complement various interior styles. Textured wood panels work well with rustic or mid-century designs, while sleek vinyl options suit minimalist spaces. Their versatility makes them a seamless addition to almost any decor.

Lightweight and easy to install, accordion doors are a great choice for renters or anyone looking for a temporary yet stylish alternative. Their blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal makes them a popular option for tight or unconventional spaces.

6. Pocket Doors

Pocket doors are the ultimate space-saving solution for closets, combining functionality with a clean, minimalist aesthetic.

Unlike traditional doors, pocket doors slide directly into the wall when opened, virtually disappearing and freeing up valuable floor and wall space. Their sleek design makes them particularly appealing in small rooms or areas where swinging or sliding doors might feel bulky or restrictive.

While installing pocket doors requires specialized hardware and some structural modification, the result is a seamless, polished look that elevates both the form and function of your space. This makes them a long-term investment, particularly suited for high-end or custom-designed homes where every detail matters.

7. Beaded Curtains

Beaded curtains offer a playful, retro-inspired alternative to traditional doors, adding texture and movement to your space. Lightweight and easy to install, they bring a sense of charm and whimsy, making them a perfect fit for bohemian, eclectic, or artistic interiors.

With a wide range of colors, patterns, and materials available, beaded curtains provide endless opportunities for personalization. Whether you prefer shimmering metallic beads for a touch of glamour or colorful wooden designs for a more natural, earthy vibe, there’s a style to match any aesthetic.

While they don’t provide full coverage like solid doors, beaded curtains are ideal for those who prioritize creativity and individuality over convention. They add a unique, free-spirited touch to any room, making your closet feel like a statement piece rather than just a storage space.

8. Shoji Screens

Inspired by traditional Japanese design, Shoji screens offer a striking yet understated option. Crafted with wooden frames and translucent paper or fabric panels, they create a harmonious balance of privacy and light, allowing soft, diffused illumination to enhance the space while keeping closet contents discreetly hidden.

Available in classic natural wood or sleek contemporary finishes like black or espresso, Shoji screens are both timeless and versatile. Their clean lines and minimalist aesthetic make them particularly well-suited for modern, Asian-inspired, or Zen-style interiors, where they bring a sense of balance, tranquility, and refined elegance to the space.

9. Repurposed Items

For a truly unique and personalized touch, consider repurposing vintage materials like shutters, salvaged doors, or reclaimed wood panels as closet doors. This creative and eco-friendly approach not only adds character but also infuses your space with a sense of history and charm.

Imagine the rustic beauty of antique French shutters painted in soft pastel hues, bringing a romantic touch to a shabby-chic bedroom. Or the industrial edge of weathered metal doors, repurposed for a modern loft, seamlessly blending old-world craftsmanship with contemporary design. Each piece carries its own story, transforming your closet into a one-of-a-kind focal point.

The DIY nature of repurposed materials allows you to customize them to match your aesthetic perfectly. Keep them raw and weathered for an authentic, rustic feel, or add fresh paint, stain, and new hardware for a more polished, modern look.

Beyond aesthetics, repurposing materials also contributes to sustainability, making this option a win-win for both style and the environment.

10. Chalkboard or Whiteboard Doors

You can transform your closet into an interactive and functional feature with chalkboard or whiteboard doors. Ideal for children’s rooms or creative spaces, these doors double as a blank canvas for doodles, reminders, and to-do lists.

A chalkboard door infuses a touch of rustic, schoolhouse charm, making it an excellent choice for vintage or farmhouse-inspired interiors. On the other hand, a whiteboard door offers a sleek, modern aesthetic that seamlessly fits into contemporary spaces, providing a clean and organized look.

Both options are budget-friendly and easy to achieve as DIY projects. Simply paint an existing door with chalkboard paint for a writable surface, or apply adhesive whiteboard film for an instant transformation.

11. Mirror Panels

If you’re looking to combine practicality with elegance, full-length mirror panels make an excellent choice for closet doors. Not only do they conceal your wardrobe, but they also reflect light, brightening the room and creating the illusion of a larger space.

Sleek and versatile, mirrored doors effortlessly complement both traditional and modern interiors, adding a touch of luxury and sophistication. They serve a dual purpose — keeping your closet hidden while providing a convenient full-length mirror for outfit checks and daily styling.

To maintain their shine, regular cleaning is essential, but their timeless appeal and functional benefits make mirror panels a smart investment. They enhance both style and utility, making your space feel more open, polished, and practical.

12. Room Dividers

Room dividers are a stylish way to conceal your closet while enhancing the overall decor. Available as folding panels, fabric curtains, or even decorative screens, these dividers come in a vast array of materials and styles.

They are especially practical in multipurpose spaces or rental homes, offering flexibility and ease of repositioning. They can also be repurposed as decorative accents elsewhere in your home, adding versatility.

While room dividers may not fully block the view of your closet, their charm and adaptability make them a popular choice for those seeking creative and temporary solutions.

For a fresh, nature-inspired twist, consider plant-based dividers. These options range from freestanding panels draped in cascading greenery to vertical garden frames that double as both a functional barrier and a stunning statement piece.

Not only do plant-based dividers soften the room with vibrant colors and organic textures, but they also introduce the calming essence of nature indoors. Perfect for bohemian, earthy, or eco-conscious homes, these dividers promote a serene and natural aesthetic, transforming your closet area into a lush and inviting space.

In Conclusion

Choosing the right closet door alternative can do more than just conceal your wardrobe — it can transform your space, reflecting your personality and enhancing functionality.

Whether you embrace minimalist rolling shades, repurposed vintage charm, or lush plant-based dividers, your closet can become a design element that complements and elevates your home. The possibilities are as endless as your imagination.

Still worse is the prospect of that door literally rusting off its hinges and making the problem that much worse.

Basic metal joint and hinge maintenance is important, and that starts with making sure they are properly lubricated. That said, there’s a lot more to choosing the right joint lubricant for your door than simply finding one that can stop the squeaking.

Door Hinge Lubricants 101

Here’s what you should look for in the
best six door joint lubricants.

What is it? For those not in the know, lubricating oil is just what it sounds like, oil that can help your door’s hinges and similar connectors remain lubricated.

Why is this important? The less lubricated these joints are, the more corroded they become and the more friction they experience, with both of those conditions exacerbating one another. Squeaky door hinges are just a symptom of the greater problem, and they’re just the beginning.

When searching for lubricating oil for metal hinges, some of the most important factors to consider include:

Whether they are multipurpose (ie, eradicate rust and act as a preventative treatment)

The surface to which you are applying the oil

The method of application (ie, dabbing, spraying, etc.)

Whether or not the oils in question are eco-friendly

Low enough viscosity to effectively penetrate the surface in question

Good enough lubricity to smooth the metal’s movement

Top 6 Lubricating Oils for Door Hinges

1. WD-40 Specialist Multi Purpose Lubricant

Not all hot tubs are technically
“Jacuzzis,” but the brand association is so strong that we call them as such,
and the same is true here. WD-40 is by far the best-known and best-acclaimed
lubricating oil on the market, and has been for decades.

As the name would imply, this is a specialized variant of the best-selling lubricating oil legend. It comes in a spray can, a definite plus for those for whom storage considerations are a serious concern.

No products found.

The spray itself is silicone-based and
works to lubricate as well as coat surfaces with a water-proof solution. It is
also resistant to dirt. What’s more, it dries fast, ensuring fast-acting
solutions without you having to wait around for it to dry or seep into the
metal.

One reason WD-40 has such a strong
reputation is the fact that it’s an all-purpose spray insofar as it not only
fights rust and improves lubricity, but can also be used on a variety of
surfaces. In addition to metal, it can be safely employed on rubber, plastic,
and vinyl. What’s more, it isn’t just or even primarily for use on door hinges,
but can be used to fight rust and improve performance on any number of
components.

Finally, WD-40 has a good reputation for
safety, which is hugely important. The last thing you want is for your attempts
to lubricate your door to instead make it an unintentional hazard. The spray
itself is essentially harmless as long as you use it safely and keep the room
in which it is being used well ventilated. It may not have the raw power some
other options on this list boast, but it is by far the most well-acclaimed and
versatile choice.

See on Amazon

2. Permatex White Lithium Grease

One of the strongest selling points for this lubricant is the fact that it can be used for metal as well as plastic surfaces, as well as surfaces which combine the two. This can be incredibly useful for situations where you have hinges or other components that are made of two or more materials. With a lubricant like Permatex, you don’t have to switch between different oils, you can use the same one to treat them together when applying them to door hinges.

No products found.

What’s more, the lubricant itself is
tough, fast-acting, and can do a great job of dealing with not just rust, but
other environmental factors such as heat and moisture as well.

This is especially important given the
fact that incidents such as rust hardly ever happen in a vacuum. Factors such
as cold and moisture cause it, which means that any lubricant which is to serve
as a long-term solution will need to be capable of standing up to and
counteracting those conditions.

If there is any downside to this offering
from Permatex, it’s the fact that it is on the messier side so far as
lubricating oils are concerned. Where WD-40 offers a simple, no fuss no muss
application, this can cause a bit of a mess if you aren’t careful. As long as you
do take precautions, however, and know what you’re doing, it can be a very
effective rust-fighting lubricant.

See on Amazon

3. CRC White Lithium Grease

“Big
things come in small packages.”

“Deceptively simple.”

“Elegance in simplicity.”

You can drag out a litany of tropes regarding simplicity and effectiveness with CRC’s offering here, and they would all be accurate. The bottle itself is small and simple, betraying nothing of the rust-fighting power it contains. In fact, it is so powerful that it almost boomerangs around to become a concern, as it may be too powerful for use on smaller-scale projects. If you are looking for a simple lubricating oil to dab on your door hinges, this may pack more of a punch than you bargained for.

No products found.

That said, this is an incredibly potent rust-fighting lubricating oil. It was designed with automotive work in mind, and it shows. It is incredibly adept at removing rust and improving lubricity when applied to the kinds of metallic and plastic surfaces commonly used in car parts. In addition, it can be quite effective when dealing with garages. As such, while this can be applied to door hinges, you’ll want to ensure it’s not “too much” for them.

Not only is this a potent lubricant, but it is also quite durable. Once you apply it, you can count on it lasting a good long time. It may be a bit messy when applied, but if you can deal with that, you’ll have an incredibly potent rust-fighting agent on your hands.

See on Amazon

4. DuPont Teflon Lubricant

As stated, one of the most important factors to consider when reviewing different rust-fighting lubricating oils is their ability to withstand the elements. Fighting rust won’t do much good if it can just come back time after time.

DuPont’s offering here does a great job of standing up to the cold and moisture that can commonly cause rust as well as general corrosion. Just as importantly, it is able to stand up to high temperatures as well. Given how much we tend to associate rust with cold and moisture, that latter risk factor is often overlooked, to the detriment of hinges and metallic components everywhere.

No products found.

This offering, thus, does a great job of
providing all-around protection against the elements, no matter what they may
be.

Another nice point about this lubricating oil is the fact that it’s relatively odor-free. Not only is that nice from a personal comfort and decorating standpoint, but it also means a reduced risk of fumes.

On the flip side, this is another
lubricating oil which can be messy to apply to metal surfaces.

If you are interested in a weatherproof
lubricating oil, however, this may well prove an effective choice for door
hinges that are caught between interior and exterior spaces, such as those for
your front door.

See on Amazon

5. Prolong Super Penetrating Lubricant PSL40010

This is another example of big things coming in small packages. Prolong Super Lubricants is one of the new kids on the block in the penetrating oil business, being less established than WD-40, CRC, and other names on this list. Nevertheless, sometimes it takes a new entrant to shake things up for the batter, and that’s what Prolong Super Lubricants is trying to achieve with options such as this.

No products found.

This option excels in breaking down rust.
It is also great for all manners of treatments for friction, especially on
metal surfaces. What’s more, not only does it do a good job of helping ease
that friction, but it can also take care of that annoying squeaking sound as
well. This option works especially well on hinges, nuts, joints, and similar
components.

One thing to be aware of is the fact that,
unlike WD-40 and some other options on this list, this option is not spray-on,
but rather comes with a traditional application stick. This would not be a
problem per se if not for the fact that the stick can sometimes have trouble
getting into tight metal spaces. If you intend to use it for light application
purposes on surfaces such as door hinges, however, this is nevertheless a solid
new option to explore.

See on Amazon

6. CRC Lithium Grease Spray

Most of the lubricating oils on our list have fallen into one of two usage camps. Either they have been “weak” enough to be used in a variety of manners on many different surfaces, or they are so “strong” as to be too potent for certain surfaces. This offering from CRC does a great job of straddling those two extremes, being strong enough to be effective on most metal surfaces without being so strong as to pose a long-term risk.

No products found.

That isn’t to say that this option isn’t
without its specialized uses as well. In addition to generalized use, it is
best used for lubricating bearings.

In addition, this is yet another
lubricating oil that does a good job of being weatherproof. That said, it is
worth noting that this spray dries much faster than other options on this list.
On the one hand, some may find that beneficial and convenient, as it means you
don’t have to wait around forever for the spray to dry. On the other hand,
however, it may dry too fast for some, and once it dries, its effectiveness may
plateau or begin to diminish.

As with so many things, however, it’s good
while it lasts, and can provide a good deal of lubricity with minimal viscosity
when applied to door hinges suffering from too much friction.

See on Amazon

When and How to Lubricate Door Hinges

As stated above, left untreated, these kinds of door issues can result in the friction becoming so bad as to make it hard to impossible to operate the joint, and the corrosion can get bad enough to cause the door to literally fall off its hinges.

That’s due to a buildup of rust, which is why one of the main things these types of lubricants accomplish is dissolving and otherwise removing rust from the surface in question. It does not do this by “just” cleaning rust away from the hinges in question but, in many cases, actively attacking and dissolving rust.

The best lubricating oils don’t stop there. The makers behind these oils understand that prevention is the best policy when it comes to solving a squeaky rusty door problem. As such, not only do they eradicate rust, but they coat the metal with a solution that helps prevent rusty buildup in the future.

Having read the above, two questions which
are bound to come to mind is whether weatherproof lubricating oils are really
necessary for “interior” hinges, and how to best apply the lubricating oil.

While weatherproofing naturally won’t matter for joints that are entirely interior, any that are borderline — such as those for doors and windows — can always benefit from it. Moreover, a key aspect of weatherproofing is the ability to combat moisture, which is always beneficial for hinges, joints, and other components, whether they are interior or exterior.

As for application, that will depend on personal preference and what you’re trying to achieve. Applying it with a stick can be more direct than a spray, but harder to manage. Sprays can cover a broad area effectively, but certain sprays are less targeted when it comes to spraying small, highly specific places.

Final Thought

All in all, you’ll want to review the
nature of your door hinge, determine the size of the area that needs to be
treated, and get a lubricating oil with a good deal of lubricity that fits your
criteria.

The small locking mechanism that holds your door shut is the only thing keeping unwanted visitors and the outside world away from your home. As a result, people often feel vulnerable, knowing that one hard push or kick is all it takes for an intruder to access their home.

Luckily for you, there are some methods and techniques you can employ to secure your doors from the inside.

In the following sections, I’ll explore some cheap and quick solutions as well as some longer-lasting alternatives. By the end of this article, you’ll be armed with all of the information you need to keep your door secured from the inside.

1. Use Door Stoppers

Sometimes the most straightforward solutions are the most practical and effective. One simple way to secure a door from the inside is by using door stoppers. Door stoppers are highly effective at stopping the door from moving by wedging it in place.

To secure your door using door stoppers, close the door and lock it. Next, push the thin side of the door stop beneath the bottom, and push until it’s stuck in place. This will keep the door secure and prevent it from coming loose and moving afterward, even if someone attempts to open it.

For best results, use two to three door stoppers placed evenly spaced across the bottom of the door. However, if you only have one door stopper, you can still use this approach.

Using door stoppers to secure your door from the inside is both a practical and cheap way of securing your doors and keeping you safe from outside dangers. Door stoppers are also straightforward to use and can last for decades without the need for replacement, making them a cost-effective investment in the long run.

2. Deploy the Chair Trick

Those of you with siblings close to you in age may remember this method of securing a door from the inside from your childhood years. This approach involves strategically placing a chair at an angle, so it blocks the door from opening from the inside.

Securing a door from the inside using a chair only works when the door opens inwards. If the door opens out, this method works from the outside and not the inside. At the same time, this approach works best with heavy chairs as the added weight secures the door in place and stops it from opening.

To secure a door from the inside using a chair:

You need to tilt the chair to a 45° angle with two legs of the chair facing out into the air.

Next, slide the top of the chair beneath the door handle.

Push the chair against the door until it’s secure.

The door is now secured in place as the chair prevents the handle from twisting, which keeps the door locked shut. The door method is practical and easy, requiring no specialized equipment for excellent results.

3. Install Security Bar

A security bar is a specialized piece of equipment designed for the sole purpose of securing doors from the inside. You can easily install a security bar without any high-end equipment in just a few moments. Therefore you won’t have to hire a handyperson to help with the installation.

Security bars are excellent devices for keeping you and your items safe while you sleep. All you have to do is put the security bar in place, and then you can rest easy until you take it down again. Check out some security bars available to buy on Amazon below:

Brinks 675-83001 Heavy Duty Door Security Bar
It’s a durable and adjustable security bar designed to keep your doors firmly secured. This bar can be used to secure both sliding doors and ordinary front doors. You also don’t need to install any screws or fittings for this security bar to function flawlessly.

Master Lock 265D Door Security Bar
It’s another affordable security bar available to buy. This make and model requires no complicated installation. Simply place one end of the bar beneath the door handle and put the other end securely on the floor. This security bar works on all types of flooring except mats and rugs.

While there are many advantages to using a security bar to secure your door from the inside, there are some drawbacks to this technique as well. For starters, it can be expensive to purchase a good quality security bar, and then some of these items also require additional installation. On top of this, a security bar can also be heavy and difficult for some homeowners to put up every evening.

4. Take Off the Handle

The vast majority of doors open and close using a handle or door knob, especially doors in your home. Therefore, if you want to close a door and ensure it remains shut, you can tamper with the handle.

Door handles and doorknobs are held in place by two to four screws. As a result, you can quickly and easily remove the handle with nothing more than the right screwdriver and a few twists of your wrist.

You can remove the door handle from a door from the inside in most cases. Removing the handle can secure the door and ensure it’s impossible to reopen until the handle is reinstalled.

It’s with noting at this point, however, that removing a door handle could get you trapped inside, especially if you’re unsure how to reattach it afterward. Check out this YouTube video for more information on removing and reinstalling door handles.

5. Use a Mop or Broom

Another cheap but reliable way of securing a door from the inside is by using a broom, mop, or other long piece of metal or wood. To use this technique, all you need to do is put one end of the brush, usually the side with the head, against the back of the door, underneath the handle.

Next, place the opposite side of the brush on the floor, ideally against a heavy object. Placing the brush in this position will prevent the handle from turning while adding additional reinforcements to the door. As a result, the door will be secured from the inside.

This technique is similar to placing a chair against the back of the door, although it’s even quicker and easier. However, brushes and brooms aren’t the most durable items. Therefore, this technique will only add limited reinforcement to the door and will not guarantee that the door remains secure.

Despite the fact that this is not the most durable method of securing a door, it will likely cost you nothing and is both quick and easy to install. As a result, using a broom or mop to secure a door from the inside is an excellent method for adding a little extra security to your home.

6. Put Some Heavy Weights Behind the Door

As I briefly touched on before, sometimes the most straightforward approaches are the most effective. One of the most practical ways of securing a door is by placing heavy objects up against it from the inside. Adding weight behind a door makes moving it very difficult, especially if the weight is significant enough.

You have a few options when it comes to heavy objects you can use to secure a door from the inside; here are a few examples below:

Bookshelf

Barbell weights

Collection of books

Large bottles of water

Bags of sand

Furniture

Bricks or cement blocks

Large kitchen appliances

Before you decide on what heavy object you are going to use, it’s important to remember that you are going to have to lift and move the weights every time you wish to open or secure the door. As a result, choosing an object like a fridge or bookshelf could be impractical and labor-intensive.

Perhaps the best way of placing weights behind a door is by using barbell weights. These items are heavy and relatively small in size. Therefore, you can add a considerable amount of weight to the door with less effort.

Moving heavy objects about isn’t a viable option for everyone. Some people may have health issues or physical ailments that make this method impractical. As a result, make sure that you’re physically able to move heavy objects regularly before choosing this technique to secure your doors from the inside.

7. Install a Door Brace

If you want to ensure that your front door is secured when you’re inside, you should look no further than a good-quality door brace. A door brace acts as a barricade that can withstand a tremendous amount of force without giving an inch.

A door brace works by one piece being installed directly into the floor inside the door. Another component is then slid into place behind the base of the door that locks into the piece in the flooring. As a result, moving a door secured by a door brace would require enough force to move the entire floor surrounding it.

The only drawbacks to door braces are the high initial cost for the pieces and the fact that installation can be complicated as a DIY job. However, if you want lasting security for your doors, this is likely your best option.

8. Get Deadbolts

Sometimes the traditional solutions are the most efficient. This can certainly be said for installing deadbolts on your door. A high-quality and robust deadbolt is a surefire way of adding additional reinforcements to your front door without needing to align an object or lift something heavy.

To secure a door using deadbolts, you’ll need first to install them on the door. Follow these steps to install deadbolts on your door:

Mark where the deadbolts will go on your door using a pencil.

Drill a hole in the wall/ door frame in line with the deadbolt.

Secure the deadbolt onto the back of the door you want to secure, and you’ll likely need to use a drill or screw gun for this step.

Close the door and check if the deadbolt is aligned properly.

It’s crucial that you properly mark where your deadbolts will go before starting the installation. Failing to do so will likely result in the lock not closing correctly. It’s also worth noting the best place to install the deadbolts is typically on the top and bottom of the door along the lateral support beams.

When drilling the hole for the bolt to go through in the door frame or wall, the hole you drill must be big enough to fit the bolt but not so big that the bolt is loose in the hole.

Lastly, when installing the lock onto the back of the door, it’s worth paying extra for good-quality screws. After all, if the screws break or come loose, the deadbolt will be ineffective at securing the door from the inside.

Once your deadbolts are successfully installed, all you need to do is slide them closed to secure your doors from the inside. You can purchase good-quality deadbolts from your local hardware store or locksmith.

9. DIY Barricades

If you want to secure your doors from the inside, you can take some extreme measures to ensure you do so successfully. One way to ensure the door is secured is by installing makeshift barricades that prevent the door from opening.

You can do this by screwing or hammering a thick piece of wood across the door and into the frame. This will definitely secure the door, although it will also leave holes in the door or the frame. Think of your favorite cartoon characters and how they would secure a door using wood and nails.

While this method is highly effective, it’s expensive, requires building materials, and damages structures in your home. Not to mention the fact that you’ll come across as a paranoid character to your neighbors should they see you’ve barricaded yourself inside with planks of wood.

When building a house, people think about what type of door they will install. Screen doors provide a barrier between the outside and inside, but what else do they bring to the table?

Created by Gilbert, Bennett, and Company in 1861, screen doors are framed structures that allow light and wind while keeping leaves, snakes, birds, and other unwanted materials out. Made of plastic or metal materials, they move via hinge, slide, or magnetic strips.

Are you wondering what a screen door is and which type of screen door is best for you? Continue reading this article to learn more about the purpose and types of screen doors available, as well as the difference between screen and storm doors. Once you decide what you want, consider screen installation and required maintenance.

What Is the Point of a Screen Door?

If you are thinking about a screen door, you’re probably wondering what purpose they serve. As someone who doesn’t enjoy bug bites, insect prevention is a big selling point, but what other purpose does a screen door serve?

Mosquitoes and other insects carry diseases like typhoid and malaria. Before there was a cure for these diseases, bug bites had the potential to be lethal. Prevention is the best way to keep a person healthy, and in the late 1900s, screens, such as cheesecloth and metal screening, were in vogue to keep insects out and people healthy.

Security is another benefit of screen doors. When using a metal screening, a person can allow wind into the home and keep vandals and would-be intruders out. The rugged metal exterior is too intricate for thieves to work through and thus keeps homeowners safe.

Entryway breezes cool down the home and allow for circulation, but they present challenges. Open a door on an autumn day and watch the leaves rustle into the entry. Leave the door ajar for a few moments, and watch rodents enter the home searching for food, heat, and shelter. Fortunately, you can keep leaves and rodents out while relishing wind moving through a room or sun streaming onto your face with a screen door.

Knowing that screen doors serve a higher purpose, think about what type you want. What would be best in your home?

What Types of Screen Doors Are There?

When shopping for a screen door, it is essential to know what types are out there before you make your selection.

Ever heard the “screech-slap” of a wooden hinge door? These iconic screen doors are generally wood and have a rust-resistant metal screening. These doors can look basic and boxy or have curved, ornate wooden lines sculpted into them. There was a time when the screens on wooden hinged doors were painted works of art that provided homeowners with privacy and an air of fancy.

The “swoosh” of a sliding door contrasts quietly against a hinged door. These entryways are generally large and rectangular. These beauties, typically made of metal, allow maximum airflow and provide expansive views. It can be challenging when rectangular sliders don’t have metal sections near the middle where people tend to push; absent such a section, people can hastily run through a slider and knock it off its track.

Consider the look, sound, and use you desire when considering a screen door. Another option to consider is a storm door.

What Is the Difference Between a Screen Door and a Storm Door?

If you live in a northern area, you may have to deal with snow. Can a storm door help protect against the elements?

A storm door is a secondary door that swings from a point outside of the main entrance. These gateways protect the inside of the house against the elements and are sturdy enough to last for years. Storm doors can have glass or screens inside them, and the outside is usually plastic or metal.

While a screen can be wooden, porous, and great for warmer weather, a screen door is made of rigid material that can keep the elements out and protect the home from rain and snow.

Now that you understand what a screen door is and is not, you can select one and decide whether you can install it.

Can You Install a Screen Door on Any Door?

Once a screen door is purchased, you will need to figure out whether you want to DIY your way through the process or want to hire someone to install it for you. What makes the most sense to you?

Some people enjoy learning about jobs and completing tasks. Many DIYers can install a screen door at their home. The door that faces the inside of the house is the “interior” door, and the door facing the outside is the “exterior” door. Exterior products are exposed to the elements, so select materials made for exterior use. The small area that lines the doorway is a “jamb.”

Begin by measuring the height, width, and door jamb. Once you know what you are working with, purchase a product that fits your size. Look additionally at the reviews for any door you purchase-some will say that installation was a breeze. In contrast, others argue that a professional should install the door.

Here is a video to show you how to hang a screen door:

When you purchase a screen door, read the reviews and find out whether you want to do the installation or whether you want to enlist the help of a professional.

Conclusion

Screen doors were created out of necessity to keep insects out while wind and sun filtered in. Folks searching for screens decide whether they want a traditional screen door, a sliding door, or a magnetic screen door.

Screen doors differ from storm doors in that they don’t protect the home from the outdoors because elements like snow and rain can penetrate them. When you select a screen door, read all about the installation and decide whether you can install it yourself or whether you need to use a professional.

Rustic elements like barn doors are popular in contemporary interior design, but they aren’t traditional doors. Locking a door is critical for safety, but how can you lock a barn door?

You can lock a barn door if it is fitted with the appropriate lock. Latch locks are often used with barn doors, but a barrel slide bolt can be fixed if you prefer a key. Other options, such as a teardrop lock, are also available.

This article will focus on the different types of locks suitable for use with a barn door and the problems you might face when locking your barn door.

Defining a Barn Door and Why It’s Difficult To Lock

A barn door is a rustic-styled door that hangs in place and slides to open. It is different from a regular sliding door because it does not slide into the wall but rather alongside it. This distinction is what makes barn doors unique.

However, the sliding mechanism of this type of door is what makes it more difficult to lock the door. A traditional door is fitted inside the wall and is surrounded by a door frame. When a key is used to turn a standard lock, a metal bolt protrudes into the door frame — this isn’t an option with barn doors.

Traditional barn doors are locked using a padlock, but this is not suitable for a barn door used in interior design because it is a one-way lock. As such, you cannot open the door from the inside because you won’t have access to the padlock.

Locks Suitable for Use With a Barn Door

To lock interior barn doors, a variety of alternative locks are used instead of the standard lock. These locks enable the user to unlock/lock the door from both sides. Here are a few options to consider:

Secure but Flimsy: Hasp Lock

Another relatively common type of lock used with barn doors is a hasp lock. It consists of a hinged clasp that can be fitted with a key on the pinned side. Ths lock is suitable for barn doors because the pin and clasp don’t need to be at the same level.

However, it’s worth mentioning that this lock is only as strong as its weakest link — the hinge. As opposed to the sturdy and hard-to-break deadbolts of a barrel bolt lock, a hasp lock can break easily with a strong enough shove from those with malicious intent.

If you are considering using a hasp lock, try to buy the best quality possible. The Alise Clasp Keyed Hasp Lock is very sturdy despite the price. It’s also quite stylish.

One Sided: Latch Locks and Floor Bolts

For interior doors like bathrooms and bedrooms, you may not want or need to lock/unlock them from both sides. As such, a one-sided lock is more appropriate in these situations. For barn doors, you can easily install latch locks and floor bolts for one-sided control.

A latch lock is more appropriate for bathrooms and bedrooms. It is a typical hook and eye type of lock. While this type of lock is secure, the downside is that you cannot lock the door from the outside at all. Also, it is considered unsafe compared to modern bathroom locks that can be easily opened from the outside in an emergency.

There are several types of latch locks available. These include:

Hook-and-eye latch

90° flip latch

Chain latch

The differences between the types of latch locks are mainly aesthetic, so feel free to choose based on your preferences and the overall design theme of your interior space.

I prefer hook-and-eye latches like the Raswik 4”/10-cm Easy Lock. It’s stylish and provides convenient privacy and a little added security.

No products found.

Floor bolts are better suited for exterior doors that you only need access to from one side — such as a main entrance or even a backyard door. Also called a cane bolt, this is a type of lock where a large cane or rod runs vertically along the door and protrudes into a hole on the floor. Although highly secure, its use in interior barn-style doors is inconvenient.

Privacy Only: Teardrop Locks

If you are solely looking for privacy when locking your sliding barn door, a teardrop lock is a stylish option to consider. Note that this type of lock offers no security at all because it can easily be opened on the other side using a tool.

Teardrop locks work well with barn doors that have a large gap between the door and the wall. Basically, a triangular-shaped “latch” can slide into a socket in the door to keep it locked shut. These work best for bathrooms, bedrooms, or perhaps a kitchen. They serve the same purpose as a standard lock used on bathroom doors that can be unlocked from the outside using a screwdriver.

I found this DIYHD Stainless Steel Sliding Lock very easy to install. It’s made of durable stainless steel and fits well.

No products found.

Double-Sliding Barn Doors

While a single sliding barn door poses problems with installing a lock, double-sliding barn doors are entirely different. Firstly, a standard lock works well with this type of door because the bolt can protrude from one door into the other.

Hook and latch kits also work well with double-sliding doors, plus there’s a variety of stylish options available.

What to Consider When Shopping for Barn Door Locks

There are so many small details in interior design you might not have considered until you begin. However, these details can change the functionality of your home and affect the aesthetics tool.

Here are a few things you may want to keep in mind when shopping for locks for your sliding barn doors.

Privacy vs. security: Consider the function of the lock on your barn door. Do you only need privacy, or are you looking for something more secure?

Measure, and measure again: You’ll need to measure exactly how much room you have for the lock installation and how big a gap your barn doors have. If the gap is bigger than the lock, you won’t be able to lock the door.

Matching hardware: For aesthetic purposes, consider the color of the rest of your door’s hardware before deciding upon the lock to install. Because barn doors are super rustic, their hardware tends to be obvious, and any clashes would stick out.

Hollow vs. solid doors: For some locks, installation requires making space inside the door to fit some of the hardware. In that case, a hollow door won’t be compatible.

Flush mounted vs. surface mounted: Consider how you want the lock to look after the installation. Do you want to mount the locks flush so that little to no part of the lock protrudes out of the door? Or do you prefer mounting the lock onto the surface of the barn door? There is no right answer, but you should choose before doing your shopping.

Shopping for barn door locks shouldn’t be a complicated matter if you take into account the aforementioned points. This should help you eliminate unsuitable locks so you only choose from the best options to suit your needs.
