You bought an expensive set of high-quality curtains, only to discover that they are too long for your needs. What do you do now? Should you replace them with more fitting ones or just let the fabric puddle on the floor, as messy as that may look?

Luckily, there is another option. Instead of spending more money or settling for a look you don’t like, you can shorten your curtains to a suitable length. And the best part is that you don’t even need to trim them or use the sewing machine. Follow our simple hacks to alter your curtains without breaking a sweat!

1. Tie Back and Blouse

Wall-mounted tieback hooks like these are an excellent way to give your long curtains the lift they need. Instead of placing them beside the curtain panels, attach them to the wall just behind the drapes. That way, when you tie the curtains back, they will appear shorter, achieving that particular look you are going for.

To add some elegance and sophistication to your tiebacks, make sure to neatly blouse them. That will create puffiness in the upper part, giving your curtains a unique style.

2. Create a New Hem

When your curtains are too long for a tieback to be of much help, you may shorten them by creating a new hem. That can be done using a sewing kit, but there is a different, quicker way that involves folding, straight pins, and iron-on hem tape.

Here is how to make a no-sew hem in a few simple steps.

Step 1: Fold the Bottom of the Curtain

To achieve the desired length of your curtain, hang it and then fold the bottoms until they only brush the floor. Alternatively, you can measure the height between the floor and the curtain rod and mark it on the curtain, using it as a guide for folding. However, if you choose the hanging technique, you’ll avoid having to take measurements, which is certainly a plus.

If your curtain is too long, fold it over twice or three times until you manage to neatly tuck in all excess fabric. Trimming the material is also a good option for those who don’t mind cutting their drapes.

Step 2: Use Straight or Safety Pins

Once you fold the curtain to achieve the appropriate length, secure the fold using straight or safety pins. Slide them horizontally through the fabric, and don’t worry if you can see them on the curtains — you will take them out later anyway.

Step 3: Iron the Fold

Place the curtain onto the ironing board and heat the iron to the appropriate temperature indicated on the curtain label. Do that even if the curtain is hanging — just place the board directly under it.

Afterward, remove the pins and carefully run the iron over the fold. That way, you will create a crease, keeping the fold in place even without the pins. If you have more than one fold, make sure to iron both the top and bottom ones.

Step 4: Place and Secure the Iron-on Hem Tape

The iron-on hem tape is an excellent way to keep your fold in place. Put it on the inside of the fold, closer to the bottom crease. Make sure that none of the tape is showing on the outside, as it could melt during ironing and create a sticky mess.

Once the tape is in place, fold the fabric over it once again and begin ironing. Make sure to be careful not to ruin the curtain. Press the iron down onto the fabric for a few seconds, then lift it and move on to the next section. It’s important not to run the iron over the material, as it might crease and remain stuck to the adhesive in that position.

Step 5: Trim the Excess Material

This final step is optional, but it might be very helpful if you have plenty of excess fabric. Use a sharp pair of scissors to trim the material and go slowly to keep the line straight. If you don’t entirely succeed, don’t worry — this edge will be on the inside of the curtain and, therefore, out of sight.

3. Use Curtain Clips

Possibly the easiest way to shorten your curtains without trimming or sewing is by using curtain clips with hooks or rings. We recommend nine clips per panel, but the number ultimately depends on the look you are going for. The more clips you put, the more luxurious your drapes will be, so keep that in mind when deciding.

No products found.

To shorten the curtain using the clips, measure the length your drapes need to be, then fold the top to achieve it. Ensure your fold is oriented towards the back, as that will make it invisible from the front.

Once you have your fold, it’s time to fasten it using curtain clips. Arrange them evenly, measuring the space carefully. If you’re using nine clips as recommended, you won’t need to measure at all.

Simply place one clip on each end of the curtain and one in the center. Then, the following two clips should go halfway between the center clip and the leftmost and rightmost clips. Finally, add the remaining four in between the ones already in place.

The last thing you need to do is slide the hooks or rings onto the rod. Once you’re done, all that’s left is to admire your new curtains that are now just the perfect length!

4. Fold a New Rod Pocket

Many curtains come with a rod pocket that allows you to easily slide them onto the curtain rod. Even if your curtain doesn’t have a rod pocket, you can make one and hence shorten your drapes to the desired length.

First, you need to fold the top of the curtain twice, making sure that the fold is positioned towards the back. If your drapes already have a rod pocket, it’s enough to make just one additional fold. Also, the fold should be twice as wide as the curtain rod, allowing you to easily mount the curtain when you finish.

Once you’ve created the folds, pin the pocket with straight or safety pins. Remember to keep the sides open, though, as you’ll need to slide the rod through them.

From here, you can hang the curtain just as it is, complete with safety pins. That’s a good solution if you’re looking for a temporary fix. However, if you need something more permanent, complete steps 3 and 4, described in the “Create a New Hem” section. The iron-on hem tape will ensure your new rod pocket stays firmly in place.

Finally, it’s time to slide the curtain onto the curtain rod. The gap you find in the folds of the fabric is your rod pocket, so simply insert the curtain rod into it. Spread out the drapes, and there you have it!

5. Raise the Rod

If you’re looking for a long-term solution and have enough space on your wall, you can raise the rod instead of altering the curtains. This option will make your window look larger and simultaneously eliminate any unpleasant puddling of the excess fabric on the floor.

Raising the rod requires drilling new holes into the wall, as well as patching and repainting the old ones. In other words, it’s not something you can repeatedly do, so make sure you get the measurements right immediately. If your curtain is five inches too long, the curtain rod should be raised by five inches too.

6. Shrink Your Curtains

If your curtains are only slightly longer than you want them to be, you might not have to modify them at all. A quick wash in the washing machine could be all it takes to shrink them to a desirable size.

In fact, some cotton curtains come with specific instructions on how to shrink them. Typically, you will succeed after a single try if you use a boil wash and dryer. Sometimes, it might take more than a single wash, but eventually, you will surely see the difference.

So, how come curtains shrink during washing so much that curtain manufacturers make them longer to account for this difference? Well, it’s because the threads are starched, stretched out, and dried during the manufacturing process. But once you wash them, they will naturally shrink, as they can’t retain that same tautness.

Of course, if your curtain is still too long despite the shrinkage, you’ll need to try one of the methods mentioned above. But don’t do anything before the first wash, as it might prove unnecessary.

Final Thoughts

With the right tools and know-how, shortening the curtains isn’t a particularly difficult task. We’ve given you a few tips, and now it’s up to you to choose the most suitable technique for your drapes. And if you approach the task carefully and methodically, the result is sure to be more than satisfying!

Setting up new curtains is almost always a pleasant experience. You take them out, give them a wash, and once they’re nice and dry, you spread them open and hang them in front of your windows. Whether they are transparent, blackout, or any other type, they bring a lot of aesthetic appeal to the room. Therefore, it’s definitely not the most enjoyable sight when you see a lot of wrinkles and creases on them.

Naturally, creasing is expected with curtains, especially new ones. After all, manufacturers have to fold them during the packing process, and even the most highly skilled packers leave a wrinkle or two. And unlike clothes, you can’t always use an iron to straighten curtains — the material may just be a little too sensitive to the heat.

So, what can you do? Well, in this article, we will go over a couple of easy methods to get rid of wrinkles and creases on new curtains. And yes, these methods completely steer clear of standard ironing.

1. Steaming the Curtains

Most home decor experts and cleaners will recommend steaming your curtains, especially if they’re brand new. Of course, before you can do that, you will need to obtain a portable steamer. Luckily, you can buy them online for a reasonable price.

TURBO STEAM POWER: Turn up the heat with this Conair...

SMOOTH OPERATOR: The Conair steamer for clothes...

3-IN-1 ATTACHMENT: This portable steamer for clothes...

CONAIR FABRIC STEAMERS: Our garment steamers have...

                See on Amazon

The first step is to fill the steamer with distilled water and choose the appropriate setting. Once you do, start from the top of the curtain and move the steamer down, line by line. Do the same on both sides of the curtain. Since most wrinkles tend to be caused by moisture, the dry steam ought to get rid of them fairly quickly.

2. Washing the Curtains

New curtains will require a wash, just to make sure you’re hanging a clean set in front of your windows. With that in mind, put them into your washer and choose the appropriate option for the type of curtain you have. Some are made of cotton, others of linen, or even pure silk.

When you’re done with the washing, place the curtain somewhere where you can actually spread it out completely, avoiding any additional creasing. If you have a clothesline and it’s sunny outside, simply hang the curtain out to dry. For indoor drying, lay it down on a flat floor or over a stairway railing.

3. Humidity Process

The humidity process method works best for small creases. It’s similar to steaming the curtains, but it doesn’t involve any gadget that you need to buy beforehand.

First, take your curtains and place them in your bathroom so that the creases are facing outward. Next, turn the hot water on and leave it for a few minutes. Soon enough, hot steam ought to start forming and filling up the room.

When you have enough steam, close the tap and shut the bathroom door. The captured steam will slowly smooth out the wrinkles. The process will take a while, but you’ll be more than pleased with the results.

4. Hair Dryer

Speaking of small creases, if you want a process that’s a little faster and doesn’t involve you taking the curtain down, try using a hair dryer. Any model will do, but if possible, try to use an extension that narrows the flow of air for better results.

When you plug in your hair dryer, aim directly for the wrinkles, keeping the air stream on them for a little while. Make sure to use a low-heat setting. Otherwise, you risk damaging the fabric. In a matter of minutes, the wrinkles should be all gone.

5. Letting the Curtains Hang

Some people want their wrinkles gone as soon as possible, and for them, the hair dryer method will do the trick. But if you’re not in a hurry to smooth your curtains out, you can always try the good, old ‘hang ‘em out’ approach.

Position your curtain in front of a fan or a window during a warm, sunny day. Naturally, make sure you expose as much of the curtain as possible. Then, simply let the curtain sit there for several hours, maybe even a whole day. Though it will take a while, each and every wrinkle should go away spontaneously due to the curtain’s own weight if exposed to the sun or mild air circulation.

6. Clothes Dryer

It might seem like overkill to some homeowners, but electric dryers can do wonders for wrinkled clothes. In fact, some models (like this one) specifically advertise an anti-wrinkle feature or two.

The process itself is simple enough. All you have to do is use a moist cloth or towel, placing it alongside the curtain in the dryer’s drum. Next, choose the permanent press cycle option and click the power button. The machine will do the rest; not only will the wrinkles disappear, but you’ll also have a fresh, warm, soft curtain to hang over the window.

7. Boiling Water

Steam from a hot shower will help get rid of creases, mainly due to it being at such a high temperature. Generally speaking, if hot air is present next to a moist item, that item will dry faster than usual.

So, with that in mind, how do we use boiling water to unwrinkle curtains? One way involves soaking a towel in piping-hot water and then hanging it (or just placing it) right behind the curtain. The heat that the towel retains ought to remove any creases and folds within hours.

8. Wrinkle-Release Sprays

Judging by the sales and user reviews, wrinkle-release sprays are all the rage this season. There are so many options out there to choose from, and each of them has its benefits. Some of them are even 3-in-1 options, combining anti-wrinkling with air freshening and odor removal.

No products found.

The process is rather straightforward. All you have to do is spray the desired amount of the liquid onto the wrinkled spot. Once you’re finished, you need to pull down on the curtain to help it straighten. It’s also important to spray from a distance of at least 10 inches to avoid damaging the fabric with too much liquid.

9. Saltwater Method

Sometimes, you’ll have to soak your curtain in a solution to help it straighten out. One relatively safe method involves mixing water and salt in a pot. A few tablespoons in 1 l of water will do the trick. Once you have your mixture, soak the curtain in it for about 3‒4 minutes. Once the time is up, take the curtain out and rinse off any remaining salt water so that it doesn’t seep into the fabric.

It’s vital that you use warm water for this process. Cold water will not have any effect while piping hot water can damage the fabric.

10. The Water-Vinegar Combo

Vinegar seems to have many different uses around the house, from cleaning to pickling food. For the purposes of this method, make sure to use white vinegar.

Mix an equal amount of white vinegar and warm water, then soak a towel in the mixture. Next, hang the towel behind the curtain and leave it there for a while. After the towel has dried up, remove it slowly. The wrinkles should all be gone by that point.

Make sure not to handle any open flames next to the curtains while the towel is up. Vinegar is highly flammable, and even a tiny amount can cause a massive fire that can spread via the curtains to the rest of the house.

11. Fabric Softener

If you don’t have the right type of vinegar handy, you can do the same method with the drying towel by using a fabric softener. Any brand will do, but make sure it’s liquid.

Pour 1l of warm water into a vessel and add a bit of fabric softener, then mix it all up. When you’re done, soak a towel and hang it behind the curtains. Not only will this method help you get rid of wrinkles in a short amount of time, but it will make both the curtains and the towel smell nice.

12. Hair Straightener

Hair straighteners are actually quite effective when it comes to ironing regular clothes, so they should be able to perform the same with curtains. As you would with shirts or trousers, make sure to drag the straightener along the length of the curtain, starting from top to bottom.

However, don’t use this method on curtains that are made of highly sensitive material like silk.

13. Vacuum Cleaner

Vacuum cleaners are a great de-wrinkling tool, whether you use the standard model or the handheld portable one. All you have to do is apply the tip of the hose to the creased spot and use suction to hold it even for a while. Don’t go overboard, though, since this action can actually rip a curtain.

14. Ice Cubes

This method involves placing ice cubes into bowls and then putting them behind each half of the curtain. Of course, when removing the bowls, make sure to part the curtains slowly. That way, you won’t knock down the water in the bowls and get the fabric all wet.

De-Wrinkling Curtains In a Nutshell

Ironing curtains may be an effective way to do away with wrinkles and creases, but it doesn’t always work. Hopefully, this article has helped you decide on the best supplementary method of wrinkle removal. All it takes is some effort and ingenuity, and your curtains will be straight and smooth as silk.

Outdoor curtains are effective at protecting you from the sun and other elements. However, even when there’s a small amount of wind, they can blow and billow around you, causing much irritation. How can you keep them from blowing around?

Once you have read this article, you’ll have some valuable tips for keeping your outdoor curtains from blowing in the wind so that you can enjoy your time outdoors more. So let’s get started.

1. Place Weights in the Hem

One of the most common methods of preventing outdoor curtains from blowing around is to attach weights to the hem. This makes the curtains heavier at the bottom and less likely to blow around in the breeze. However, when there’s a stronger wind, you may need to use another method as well.

These weights can be any small objects you have lying around your home, including:

Washers, large screws, or bolts

Marbles

Small and heavy toys

Fishing weights

Stones or pebbles

Heavy-duty magnets

To attach weights to the hem, you will need to use a seam ripper to open the curtain’s hem. You can then place your small, heavy items into the hem and sew the hem together again. Try and attach the weights by sewing them onto the hem or using fabric glue, which prevents them from moving around and provides more stability.

For added stability, you could attach a few weights to the side hems. Gravity will cause them to slide down, so you need to glue them down or sew them onto the fabric.

If your outdoor curtains are made from sheer or lightweight fabric, you’ll be able to see the weighted objects through the material, which can be an eyesore. In this case, you may want to paint the objects the same color as the fabric to make them less visible.

You may also need to remove the weights when you wash or dry clean your outdoor curtains. In this case, to make things more convenient, you might want to use velcro or buttons to secure the hem instead of sewing it.

2. Magnetize Your Curtains

Magnetizing your curtains will work well if they have metal railings and are close to large metal objects. You’ll need to buy about a dozen heavy-duty magnets and then place them into the bottom, outer, and inner side hems.

Heavy-duty magnets have a strong magnetic field and it takes some force to separate them, making them perfect for withstanding windy conditions.

You can fasten the individual curtains together whenever the weather is windy by attaching the inner side hems together. This will create one curtain unit that is heavier and less likely to blow around.

Since the curtains contain heavy-duty magnets, they weigh more and are less likely to blow around in the breeze. Additionally, you can attach the outer curtain hems to nearby metal railings or objects to secure them further.

3. Consider Using Heavier Curtain Fabric or a Curtain Liner

Lightweight or sheer curtains look great outdoors as they create a whimsical effect for your outdoor space. The main drawback to sheer or lightweight curtains is that they blow around very quickly, even in the slightest breeze.

This can quickly become irritating, and a better solution would be to replace the lightweight fabric with a heavier one that’s not as likely to blow in the wind.

Blackout curtains tend to have denser fibers and weigh more than regular curtains. They’re also great at blocking out the noise and would make wonderful outdoor curtains to protect guests against the sun.

If you love your lightweight curtains and don’t want to replace them, you can attach a curtain liner to the inside of the curtains to make them heavier.

Shower curtain liners are an excellent liner option as they have been designed to prevent the shower curtain from billowing.

4. Attach the Curtains to Another Object With Velcro

You might have been interested in using the magnetizing option for your curtains, but this won’t be possible if the curtains don’t have metal around them. In this case, Velcro may be your best bet as it can securely fasten the curtain to a solid object.

Depending on the surrounding area, you can attach Velcro strips along a side wall or post to secure the outer edges of the curtains.

For maximum benefit, attach Velcro strips such as the strong with secure hold Velcro Stick On along the side inner hems so that the curtains are one unit and heavier.

If your curtains are long enough and the ground below them is solid, you can use Velcro strips along the bottom.

5. Wind the Curtains Around Heavy Pot Plants

This method of securing curtains so that they don’t blow around in the wind is a little different. If you urgently need a good solution, you don’t want to buy anything, or you’re on a strict budget, you may want to try winding your curtains around heavy potted plants.

It’ll work if you already have a few large plants or trees that have been potted in large and heavy containers. Since they’re very heavy, these pot plants will make excellent anchors for your outdoor curtains.

You’ll need to wind the curtains around the plants so that the curtains still provide sun protection to your guests but that they’re also securely fastened to the plant. You can do this by tying a gentle knot around the plant.

If the curtains are long enough, you could secure the edge of the bottom hem underneath the pot.

6. Use Decorative Curtain Tie-Backs

The primary function of decorative curtain tie-backs is to keep curtains out of the way and help them look attractive when they’re open by cinching them in the middle. Curtain tie-backs are normally made from decorative rope, ribbon, or metal.

Metal ones are typically fastened onto the wall, while rope tie-backs are loose.

If you already use curtain tie-backs for your outdoor curtains, experimenting with them to see if they can help prevent them from billowing in the wind can be a great idea.

Of course, you still want the outdoor curtains to perform their primary function of protecting your guests from the outdoor elements. You could, therefore, consider tying them back, loosening some fabric from the top half of the tie-back, and arranging them so that they can provide some protection.

Your outdoor curtains won’t provide as much protection as they would if they were completely open, but at least they won’t blow around, and you’ll be partially protected.

7. Wedge the Curtains Between Heavy Furniture

Wedging your outdoor curtains between heavy pieces of furniture, or other heavy objects, like large potted plants or trees, can prevent them from blowing around when it’s windy. While this isn’t a permanent solution, it can work if you need a quick solution and you have plenty of heavy outdoor furniture available.

It involves placing two rows of heavy furniture on either side of your outdoor curtains. Try and arrange the furniture so that it secures the curtains and doesn’t allow them to move.

If you want to use the furniture outside the curtains, you won’t be protected from the sun and wind, but anyone sitting on the other side will enjoy good protection, even when the wind is very gusty.

8. Run a Heavy-Duty Cable Through the Hem

Curtains are anchored on the top with a rod or rail, and an excellent way to keep them moving around in the wind is to anchor them from the bottom.

You can do this by running a heavy-duty cable, chain, or rod through the bottom hem. Try looking in your garage or basement for a long, heavy-duty object before going shopping, as many folks have these lying around gathering dust.

Otherwise, you can find them for sale at your local DIY or big box store.

Once you have your heavy-duty cable, open the curtain’s hem and slide it in. Sew the hem together again, and the curtain will now be heavy enough to remain stable in windy conditions.

The only downside to this method is that you may have to remove the heavy-duty object before washing or dry cleaning the curtains.

9. Sew a Heavy and Decorative Cord Along the Hem

If you’re concerned about how your curtains will look after you’ve tried to prevent them from blowing around, consider sewing a heavy, decorative cord along the hem. This gives you the best of both worlds as it adds much-needed weight to the curtains’ bottom and adds some creativity and beauty to the curtains.

Visit your local fabric or home decor store to browse their selection of heavy cording and pick one that’ll complement your curtains nicely. If you can’t find a heavyweight cord you like, you could always make your own by selecting a few lengths of decorative roping that you want and feel would match your curtains well.

Twist the individual pieces of rope together to make a single, heavy-duty cord.

If it’s too difficult to sew the heavy cord onto your curtains, you could attach it with some fabric glue, which is widely available at most big fabric or department stores.

10. Anchor the Hem Into the Ground

Most outdoor curtains consist of a top rail from which the fabric hangs. The material is anchored on the top, but not at the bottom, and this is why the curtains will blow around when it is windy.

A great solution, therefore, is to anchor the bottom edges of the curtains into the ground. This is only easily done if the curtains are above soft ground or grass, as it’s simple to place the anchor into the ground.

To anchor your curtains into the ground, place sturdy spikes into the ground at various intervals along the bottom of the curtain. Tent spikes work well as anchors for outdoor curtains, and you can find these at most outdoor or big box stores.

Attach clamps to the spikes and then anchor the curtains down with the clamps, which will prevent them from blowing around when it’s windy.

11. Use a Bottom Rail

If you don’t plan on using any of the above methods and want a permanent solution for preventing your outdoor curtains from blowing around, consider anchoring them to the ground using a bottom rail.

This is a costly solution, but one that works well.

It involves permanently installing a curtain rail just above the ground. The curtain rail should be the same size and length as the top one, and you would need to modify your outdoor curtains so that the bottom hem can be attached to the bottom rail.

12. Use the Threading Method

The threading method involves creating buttonholes along the edges of the curtain and threading the ribbon in a matching color through the holes. You can then secure the curtains to a nearby railing, post, tree, or other objects with the ribbon and tie an attractive bow.

Of course, you’ll need to be happy to have holes along the sides of your curtains, but creating them can be time-consuming.

However, the result is beautiful and is functional as well as esthetically pleasing.

Key Takeaways

Outdoor curtains can get very annoying when they start blowing and billowing in the wind. Fortunately, if you live in a windy area, you can do a lot to prevent this.

These tips should help:

Place weights in the hem.

Secure the curtains to other objects with magnets, Velcro, or ribbon.

Magnetize your curtains.

Use heavy plants or furniture to secure them.

Attach a heavy-duty cord or other object either inside or on the outer, lower hem.

Use a bottom rail.

Hanging curtains in a rental apartment can be tricky. You need drapes to give you privacy, but you don’t want to damage the walls by installing curtain rods or equipment as you’ll have to pay for the damage to the walls. How can you hang curtains in a rental?

This article will discuss in detail various methods of hanging drapes in a rental apartment without causing any damage to the window frames or walls.

1. Use the Existing Curtain Rods

If your rental apartment already has curtain rods compatible with your curtains, you shouldn’t have any issue hanging your curtains. Unfortunately, this is very rarely the case.

Even if your apartment has existing curtain rods, they may not accommodate your drape style.

If you already have curtains and you don’t want to go to the expense of attaching new curtain rods, use the existing one in by following one of the ways below:

Adapt your curtains to fit your apartment’s curtain rod. This can involve sewing on a strip of fabric to the drapes and inserting curtain rings or accessories compatible with it.

Buy extra long curtains and hang them over the existing rod. Measure the length of your window, and buy double the length of curtain fabric. Then drape each curtain drop over the rod and open and close as needed. Now and then, you may have to readjust the fabric as it’ll shift a little after each use.

Drape the curtains in an attractive way over the current curtain rod. If your apartment is temporary and you don’t want to spend too much money, try draping your curtains in a decorative way over the rod. You can adjust them whenever you need more privacy or when you want to let more natural light into the room.

2. Try the Heavy-Duty Magnet Method

If you really like the look of a particular curtain rod, or you already have one that you love, you can attach it to the wall with heavy-duty magnets, which will only work if the curtain rod is metal. The heavy-duty magnets will provide the necessary support for the drapes and rod.

The heavy-duty magnets should be attached to the wall with the strongest Command brand hooks you can find.

I recommend Command Wall Hooks from Amazon. These hooks will hold on to the wall without you needing to damage the walls by creating holes, and won’t leave any sticky residue behind when you remove them.

Wait 24 hours after putting up the wall hooks before placing any tension on the magnet and Command hook as per the instructions.

When you’re ready to treat your window, attach the rail to the magnets, and hang the curtains as you usually would. Alternatively, you could buy a magnetic curtain rod from a DIY store. These come with built-in magnets that you can attach to any metallic surface.

Bear in mind that heavy drapes might be too weighty for this method and could cause the curtain rail to fall down.

Sheer or lightweight curtains work best with the heavy-duty magnetic method.

3. Make Your Own Curtain Frame

Making your own curtain frame that doesn’t attach to the wall or window is easier than it sounds. Wedding and party planners often create curtain frames to dress windows beautifully at events with minimal fuss.

A curtain frame can be custom-made and is free-standing on the floor directly in front of the window. You’ll have a curtain rail on the top and supporting rods or posts on the sides that allow it to remain upright.

The side posts can be metal, wood, or any other material you have lying around or can obtain cheaply.

You’ll need to measure your window’s dimensions and then build your frame from there. Try to design it and use the materials so that the structure is as close to the window as possible.

Once your personalized curtain frame is ready, you can hang your curtains on its rail and then place them in front of your window.

4. Use a Spring Tension Rod

Spring tension rods are incredibly versatile as they can fit the width of any space needing a suspension rod.

They’re widely available at DIY and big box stores and aren’t too expensive. Alternatively, you can check out this Amazer Spring Tension Rod. It resists rust, and there are several sizes that you can choose from.

A spring tension rod is an excellent way to hang curtains temporarily in a rental apartment as they’ll fit any window size, and you don’t need to drill into the wall. They typically have simple designs and can’t support heavy objects, so it’s best to use them to hang light fabric curtains.

This method will also work with drapes that require rings to hang. You’ll need to place the rings onto the tension rod before installing it in your window.

Once this is done, you can hang your curtains.

5. Use Clip-On Brackets

Many rental apartments already have brackets above the windows.

Alternatively, they may have unattractive blinds in front of the windows that have brackets. Most people don’t want to use the standard vertical blinds that many apartments come equipped with as they’re ugly, poor quality, and break easily.

An alternative method might include putting up clip-on brackets, as you can simply clip them to the top of the blinds and then hang your rod and curtains.

For this purpose, I recommend the NONO Bracket Mini clips. They don’t require any tools and work the same as normal brackets that you drill into the wall. When you move out of your rental apartment, you can simply remove the clip-on brackets, and you’ll leave no damage behind.

6. Take Advantage of the Roller Shade

Some rental apartments already have cheap roller shades that block out the light and provide privacy. They’re not particularly attractive, and, understandably, you’ll want to personalize your living space with your own drapes.

If you don’t want to install a new curtain rail and have a roller shade, roll the shade up completely so that it’s in a single, horizontal tube at the top of the window.

The bottom edge of the roller blind will be poking out, so you’ll need to secure it to the rest of the rolled-up blind to make a solid tube. The best way to do this is to remove the blind (if possible) by unscrewing it from the bracket against the wall.

Then, make a solid tube with some double-sided tape, rubber bands, or Blue Tack. Avoid using a stapler as this will create a hole in the fabric, and your landlord may make you liable for the damage.

If you use curtain rings, you can place them over the improvised tube and hang your drapes.

If there’s no other way for you to attach your curtains to the improvised tube, you may have to drape them over the tube and then screw it back into the bracket.

7. Hang a Curtain Rail With Command Brand Hooks

Command brand hooks are attached to smooth walls and other surfaces with a strong and sticky strip.

I recommend the Command Jumbo Hook that can hold up to 7.5 lbs (3.40 kg), making it great for supporting a curtain rail and drapes. It comes in a package of 4 hooks, so you’ll have extras on hand just in case you need them.

Command brand hooks come in a range of attractive colors, so you should find one that matches your curtain rail well. Bear in mind that they may not adhere to the walls if they’re textured, in which case you’ll have to use another method of securing your curtain rail.

Once you have your Command brand hooks, you’ll need to attach the sticky strip to the wall first, followed by the hook. You’ll then need to wait for 24 hours to allow the hook and sticky strip to adhere fully to the wall.

After this, you can place your curtain rod on the hook and hang your drapes.

When you move out of your rental apartment and remove the hooks and sticky strips, you may notice that it leaves a sticky residue and mark behind on the wall. If this happens, you should be able to remove it with some eucalyptus oil and a soft cloth.

8. Suspend a Curtain Rod From The Ceiling

Suspending a curtain rod from the ceiling is an excellent option if you can’t use the existing window or surrounding walls to install a curtain rail temporarily. Ceiling to floor drapes have the added advantage of creating the illusion of height, which is especially beneficial if your room has low ceilings or a small window.

You can suspend a curtain rail from the ceiling using a few broom and mop hooks. These are attached to the surface similarly to Command brand hooks in that they have sticky strips.

Bear in mind that if your ceiling is textured, the strips won’t adhere well, and the hooks won’t provide enough support for the curtain rail.

Mop and broom hooks are inexpensive and available in DIY, big box, and dollar stores. Or you can go online and check out this Mop and Broom Hook holder. It is made from stainless steel and looks stylish wherever it is located.

They’re available as either closed or open hooks. Closed hooks work better as they help prevent the curtain rail from unexpectedly sliding out.

Once the hooks stick to the ceiling, you can slide your curtain rail through the loop and hang your curtains.

9. Use a Series of Coat Hooks

Using coat hooks as a temporary curtain hanging solution is great because they don’t need to be attached to anything, and there’s a low risk of damage to the walls. You can buy coat hooks at any DIY or big box store, but your curtains will also need hooks or rings attached to them so that they can slide onto the coat hooks.

Your coat hooks can be attached to an existing curtain rail or an upper window ledge, and this will freely allow you to open and close your curtains.

The coat hooks can shift around, and you may need to rearrange them every few days.

10. Use Double-Sided Tape To Hang Curtains

The final method is only recommended if you’ll stay in your rental apartment for a short period and don’t want to go to the expense or effort of finding a suitable curtain hanging method.

It can also work if you don’t have extra money for another solution.

This method involves hanging your drapes up with double-sided tape or a product such as the Bostik Blu-Tack. Blu-Tack is a reusable adhesive that can be used on a variety of surfaces and is easy to remove, making it ideal for a short-term rental.

You can also use velcro that you attach to the wall and drapes with Command brand hook strips. It should only take a few minutes to attach the Blue Tack or double-sided tape to the drapes and then secure them over the window.

Before starting, however, you’ll need to decide how open or closed you want your drapes to be, as this method doesn’t allow you to open or close them whenever you want to.

If you’re hanging drapes for privacy and want them closed, a downside is that they won’t allow any natural light into the room, making it darker. The reverse is also true, and without any drapes, you’ll have less privacy but more light in the room.

If you don’t have drapes, you can use other fabrics instead.

Table cloths work well, and even a large bath towel will do the trick if you don’t have anything else. The result won’t be elegant and attractive, and it won’t enhance the look of your room.

It will, however, be functional and will provide you with the privacy you need.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, hanging curtains in a rental apartment don’t have to be expensive or damaging to the walls. If you want to spend as little money as possible, using Blue Tack, velcro, or double-sided tape to hang your drapes or a piece of fabric is a great idea.

Alternatively, you can use the existing curtain rail, heavy-duty magnets, a spring tension rod, clip-on brackets, or Command brand hooks to hang your drapes.

Coat hooks and suspending a rail from the ceiling also work well.

There are plenty of things you can do to make rooms seem visually larger. If you decorate your rooms adequately, no one will be able to notice that their size is limited. The best way to do that is by letting a lot of light penetrate the interior.

Windows play a vital role in how sunny the inside of your home will be. Thus, special care needs to be taken when choosing your drapery. With the right curtains, you could make your rooms seem not only warmer and more interesting but also brighter and more spacious.

Also, when it comes to curtains, the options are limitless. There is a variety of materials, textures, and patterns to play around with — and the best part is that they can all be used to visually alter the room. If you think that sounds interesting, read on to discover my 5 amazing tips on how to make a room look bigger with curtains!

Chances are that your home is equipped with average-sized windows. However, you definitely can enlarge them visually. If the windows appear bigger, not only will they let more light inside, but they will also give the illusion of roominess. That is where properly placed curtains come into play.

1. Hang the Curtains as High as Possible

The first thing you should do before you even start
hanging your curtains is to position the curtain rod or track properly. In
order to make your window and the whole wall seem higher, put the curtain rod as high above the window as possible. Attaching
the rail close to the ceiling tricks the eye into believing the wall is bigger.
Thus, it visually expands the whole room.

A good rule of thumb is to place the curtain rod
approximately 4 inches above the window if you have ceiling moldings or around
6 inches above it if you don’t. By doing so, the curtains will remain close
enough to the window to conceal its edges. At the same time, they will be high
enough to elongate it and make the walls appear taller.

2. Use Curtain Rods to Your Advantage

Curtain rods and railings come in a variety of shapes
and sizes, so remember to make the most of the options available to make any
room look bigger.

One thing you could do is opt for a decorative curtain rod. You should choose an interesting rail made from carved wood or one that comes in an unconventional shade or finish. Adding intricacy to the room with a beautiful, detail-rich curtain rod would immediately draw the eye upward and make the ceiling seem sky-high.

Another trick you can use entails installing a long or adjustable curtain rod. Just like placing the
rod higher would make the room seem taller, using a longer rod would make the
room seem wider. Keeping the rod anywhere between 8 and 12 inches wider than the
window frame would do the trick.

A long curtain rail allows you to push the curtains all the way to the sides of the window. By pushing them to the sides, they will only conceal the edges of the window frame. Exposing a window this way will make it appear wider, allow more light to enter, and give the room a more commodious feel.

You might also want to read: How to Hang Curtains in a Rental Apartment

3. Long Curtains Are the Way to Go

Unless the layout of your room doesn’t allow it, you should only use long curtains in a
confined space. Contrary to popular belief, curtains do not make tiny rooms
seem cluttered ― not if you pick the right ones, that is. So, try to stay away
from mid-length or window-sized curtains. They will only accentuate the space
limitations of your room and do nothing to expand the window.

On the other hand, long curtains would have the same
effect on your room as stiletto heels have on a woman’s posture. The walls
would appear higher and leaner, and the whole room would get a facelift.

Pro Tip: Consider curtains with patterns
that contain vertical details, such as stripes or woven elements.

In fact, long curtains can also give a room a different feel. By letting the curtains puddle on the floor, you can bring out the romantic in you. Alternatively, you can tap into your practical side and leave them to hang only an inch above the floor. That way, they would be less prone to getting dirty and wouldn’t get in the way when you’re sweeping the floor.

4. Mind the Texture of the Curtains

When choosing the material for the curtains in your
compact apartment, consider how they will be used. If you would like to keep
the curtains drawn, go for a material
that would let enough sunlight in. Conversely, if the curtains would mostly
be pulled to the sides of the window, a better solution would be to select a
denser fabric.

In your case, curtains should help you achieve privacy
and block the view inside your home. Therefore, choose a lightweight material, such as linen, that would let the
natural light in. The light would easily pass through such a sheer material
while simultaneously keeping any Peeping Toms at bay.

In contrast, if you see curtains only as a stylish
window treatment, consider using sturdier materials. Heavier fabrics would be
easier to keep pulled back at the sides of the window frame, leaving the window
exposed. An added bonus is that they also look more expensive and luxurious.

Either way, remember that your goal is to let light
in. A room with lots of natural light feels airy and spacious. In that case,
heavy, opaque fabrics are not your friends; they can clog up the space, darken
the room, and make it more stuffy.

5. Opt for a Light Color Scheme

In line with the abovementioned tips, in order to have plenty of natural light, use light-colored materials. Plain white, silvery gray, or beige are the safest options. They allow the light to illuminate the room, giving it an open and inviting feel.

For a similar, yet mellower effect, go for an off-white shade, such as
greige or eggshell. Also, remember that pale yellow, pastel pink, or light
apricot would shower the room in warm, sunny tones, making it equally spacious
and welcoming.

Final Thoughts

Hopefully, the tips and tricks you read above will

Sometimes noise can be so unbearable you can’t even hear yourself think. If you’ve finally decided to take matters into your own hands and buy soundproof curtains, then good for you! You’ll be doing yourself a big favor.

There are plenty of benefits to owning these curtains. For example, not only do they reduce the noise from outside, but they also help absorb the echoing sounds in your home. So, if there’s an annoying echo that you want to get rid of, all you have to do is place the curtains in that room.

Before we get into the best soundproof curtains on the market, here’s a little insight into what they are and how they work.

Soundproof Curtains vs. Regular Curtains

Soundproof curtains are made of a thicker material than regular curtains. They’re often made with multiple layers that capable of absorbing and blocking sound. Because of that, they are frequently used in residential areas to reduce the amount of noise.

These curtains can be used anywhere, and are made of different fabrics. Also, you can choose from different colors, designs, and textures. Soundproof curtains are usually made of polyester, but there are also velvet and satin curtains available.

Even if you live in a less noisy suburban area, these curtains are great for your bedroom, living room, etc. If you have a home cinema, soundproof curtains will enhance your movie experience.

For those of you with special preferences, it’s also possible to have them custom made.

Do Soundproof Curtains Work?

Are the curtains just for show, or will they really help get rid of the unwanted noise? The truth is that soundproof curtains won’t stop all existing sounds. That would be impossible. However, they can reduce the level of noise coming from outside as well as inside your home.

If you’re still skeptical, here is a brief explanation of how it works. The curtains are made of multiple layers of thick materials. These materials absorb sound waves produced from within your home, and noise coming from outside. Although you will still be able to hear if a dog is barking outside, the difference is still quite big. So, if noise is a big distraction in your daily routine, go buy yourself some soundproof curtains.

The Properties of Effective Noise-Reducing Curtains

When it comes to buying soundproof curtains, you should keep an eye on the following features:

Curtain size

Material

Thickness and weight

Installation

Curtain Size

First, determine where you want to hang your soundproof curtains. Once you’ve done that, measure the length, height, and width of the windows or doors you are soundproofing.

When you’re buying regular curtains, all you have to worry about is matching the size of the window you wish to hang them on. Soundproof curtains are different. You should buy curtains that are 2 or more inches wider than the window, and a few inches longer (but not too long). And if you want extra sound cancellation, try ceiling to floor curtains.

Choosing the Curtain Material

Extra fiber in the material is what you should look for. Suede and velvet are the perfect fabrics to choose, and they’ll look great in your room.

Even better, look for curtains that contain insulated, Thermaweave or Thermalayer layers. They have extra fibers which help immensely with noise. Also, an added advantage is the fact that these materials act as great thermal insulation. This means they’ll keep your room warm in the winter, and refreshed in the summer.

Additionally, extra liners will help with noise cancellation even further and are included in most curtains.

The Thickness and Weight of the Curtain

The weight of the curtains is also linked to the thickness, and hence the material of the curtain. If you are serious about soundproofing the room, you should go for thicker and heavier curtains. Actually, the heavier, the better.

The weight of the curtain is important because heavy curtains absorb sound much better than lighter ones. Additionally, for better results, you can double or triple the layers of the curtain.

A word of warning, though; don’t hang your curtains on older rods that are not strong enough. Since they are quite heavy, you may need to buy a new one.

Get a Strong Curtain Rod

As I said, it’s essential to purchase a curtain rod that will be able to hold your heavy curtain. Wrap-around rods are an inexpensive and easy-to-install option. They attach on to the walls, which is useful because it eliminates gaps that form at the edge of the curtains.

If you’re worried that your curtain rod won’t be able to handle all that weight, you can use double rods. That way you can double or triple your curtain layers.

If you aren’t a fan of curtain rods, you can replace them with ceiling-mount brackets. They hang from the ceiling and provide more coverage.

Check out this article for more ideas on how to hang curtains without causing damage to your windows or walls.

Top 2 Brands for Quality Soundproof Curtains

If you’ve gone through these main steps, then you’re ready to buy your first soundproof curtains. Here are the best brands of soundproof curtains for you to consider:

Nicetown Curtains

Nicetown is one of the most popular brands when it comes to soundproof curtains. They specialize in making various types of curtains, room dividers, and similar products. The noise reducing curtains they make are among their most popular products. People seem to love them, and there are some good reasons for that. These curtains are rather affordable but also durable and quite effective. And the best of all, you can easily install them yourself. These are our top two picks:

1. Nicetown Three Pass Microfiber Noise Reducing Blackout Window Drapes

As the title suggests, these curtains from Nicetown don’t only reduce noise, but they also block the sunlight. This is because they are made using a special triple-weave technology. The polyester fabric they are made of has three layers that make these curtains exceptionally thick and dense (between the two outside layers, there is an inner black layer). Since they are so thick and dense, these curtains also provide thermal insulation.

H.Versailtex Curtains

H.Versailtex noise reducing curtains are definitely among the best soundproof curtains you can find. They are a bit more expensive than those made by Nicetown. However, at under $50, they are still quite affordable.

H.Versailtex makes soundproof curtains in a range of designs and sizes, so there is plenty to choose from. These are our top three picks:

They are 100 inches wide and 108 inches long, which should give them enough coverage.
Soundproof Curtain Installation Tips

First, read the instructions that come with the curtains. This might seem obvious, but it’s an essential and commonly overlooked step. Also, make sure the rod and rings are strong enough to hold these heavy curtains.

Measure twice and use the right tools. Always check your measurements twice for accuracy. Use a pencil and level to prevent a crooked curtain. Use wall anchors if there isn’t a stud where the brackets are being installed.

For loose hanging curtains, choose a rod that you can extend by two or three inches. The overlap allows you to provide more protection when they’re closed, and to position the curtains on each side of the window during the day for large, bright windows.

You might also want to read: How to Keep Your Curtains From Blowing in the Wind

The Final Verdict

Even though soundproof curtains can’t block all noise, they are still much more affordable than costly remodeling projects such as window or door replacements. If you invest in quality, thick curtains and pair them with a liner, they should improve disruptive noise drastically.
