Of course, ideally, you want to space your fixings equally along the length of your shelf. However, if you need to tweak the placement slightly to hit a stud, you can do so.

So, run the stud detector along your horizontal line. The stud detector will give a visual and audible signal when it detects a stud. Mark the stud’s center as that’s where you’ll attach the lag screws.

If, as is often the case, you can’t drill all or any of your fixing holes into a stud, don’t worry. Just ensure you use proper anchors suitable for use with drywall. We’ll get to that next.

4. Drill Holes and Screw the Lag Screws Into the Wall

The process for this step will vary depending on the type of wall to which you’re fixing your floating shelf.

In all cases, you should ensure you drill horizontally, so the protruding ends of the fixings will be level. To do this, here’s a little trick you can use. You’ll need an eye hook like this Axesickle 2 Inch Metal Eye Hook.

Put the metal eye hook over your drill bit and center it on the bit. As you drill, if you don’t keep your drill bit horizontal, the hook will slide backward or forward. Keeping it centered will ensure your holes are straight. Using a carpenter’s square may also help.

Fixing Into a Masonry Wall

Fixing Into a Stud in a Stud Wall

To fix lag screws into a stud, pre-drill pilot holes into the studs first. An 11/64” drill bit should do the job in softwood studs.

The pilot hole will make it easier to screw the lag screw into the stud. You won’t need an anchor for this.

Again, aim to have about 3” of your lag screw in the stud.

Fixing Into Drywall

As luck would have it, you’ll probably find that there are no studs where you want to place your floating shelf. Of course, you could adjust the position of your shelf so you can attach it to at least one stud.

But if you’re set on the position you’ve chosen, no worries. You’ll need to use good-quality drywall anchors.

There are various types of drywall anchors available. There’s usually an indication of the weight-bearing ability on the pack. So, make sure you check this.

The Fischer DUOPOWER is a good example of the type of quality anchor you should consider. You’ll need about a 15/32” drill bit for the hole to put this in.

As you’ll see in the following video, when you insert a screw into the Fischer DUOPOWER, it forms a knot on the inner surface of the drywall, and that’s what provides a firm fix:

This type of anchor is stronger than the standard kind you often get packaged with screws. Still, if all your fixings are in drywall, it’s not a good idea to place heavy items on your floating shelves.

5. Check the Fixings Are Level and Trim the Bolts

Once you’ve screwed the lag screws into the wall, put your spirit level across them to ensure they’re still level. They should be if you’ve used the metal hook trick outlined above.

You’ll then need to trim the hexagonal bolt end off the lag bolt using a grinder.

6. Drill Holes in the Back of the Floating Shelf

Next, you’ll need to drill holes in the back of the floating shelf matching the position of the wall fixings. Hold the shelf’s rear edge up to the fixings, and mark those points on the shelf. Make sure your markings are centered along the back edge of the shelf.

Now for the tricky bit. You have to ensure that the holes you drill in the shelf are perfectly straight.

If you don’t have a drill press to guide your drill, don’t worry. There’s a cheaper alternative.

You can use a hand-held drilling guide like the Milescraft 1312 DrillBlock. It’s relatively inexpensive, so ideal if you don’t usually have a use for such a tool.

Brown is a very versatile, warm color. It can make other, bolder colors pop and be the perfect “backup dancer” to their stardom. However, it can also be a real star. So if you’re a lover of brown just like I am and are in the midst of redecorating, you might be wondering what color walls go with brown furniture.

The answer to that question will be music to your ears. Almost all colors go swellingly with brown furniture. However, some simply make better pairings than others. Let’s take a look, shall we?

1. How Much Brown Is Too Much Brown

My first suggestion might seem odd to some, but here it is — brown furniture, especially wooden furniture, goes great with brown walls. However, there are a few tricks that will make all the shades of brown pop.

When mixing brown furniture and brown walls, you have to be careful. If you go too dark, you might end up feeling as if you’re living in a mud hole. On the other hand, if you go too light, you’ll turn your room into a sepia nightmare. When combining brown tones, the trick is in the balance.

Play Around With Shading

If you have dark brown furniture, then I don’t have to tell you that dark brown walls won’t be your friend. Of course, that all depends on the type of space you’re redecorating. The dark-on-dark theme might look good if you have a huge area and are going for that “cigar-bar-in-the-prohibition-era” type of vibe.

But if you have a regular old living room (or bedroom, or any other room), like most of us do, go for a bit of contrast. Light brown or even beige tones will make the dark furniture pop. What’s more, these won’t be too overbearing or make the room appear too dark or closed off.

2. You Can Never Go Wrong With White

White isn’t the most exciting suggestion — I’ll give you that. However, crisp white walls often look the most gorgeous. What’s more, they make the entire room look more spacious, light, and comfortable.

White isn’t hard on the eyes, and it’s the perfect choice to enhance those deep, rich, and luscious tones of your brown furniture. Furthermore, the white-brown combination creates a cozy, relaxed atmosphere. It’s the traditional charm at its finest!

To make your room even more beautiful, consider incorporating brown details on your white walls. Big, sturdy, full-wood shelves or natural brown leather (or pleather) details will only enhance the rustic vibe.

3. Royal Blue With Crisp White Trims

This choice is one of my personal favorites. It’s an ideal combination for big rooms that feel empty. However, it’s also a good pick for smaller rooms, as long as they have a lot of natural light.

Deep dark blue walls can complement your brown furniture in a way you probably never imagined. Although this combination is a bit heavy, especially if the furniture is dark brown, it’s also the most regal-looking one on my list. And when you add those fresh white trims, the room will look like a castle ballroom!

This elegant combination will get even better if you spruce it up with some fancy artwork that has gold hues. Gold frames or gold details throughout the room (like a pair of cute, fluffy throw pillows) will pull the entire look (and feel) of the room together.

4. Forest Green and All Its Friends

Is there anything that goes as well as green and brown? Probably not. These two colors are the ones that are most represented in nature. Therefore, they are massive hits in interior design. Rooms with green walls and brown furniture exude that organic, natural vibe that’s relaxing and stimulating at the same time.

If you’re a fan of green, you can go one of two ways — light or dark. Much like my dark blue suggestion, dark green with colder undertones will make the atmosphere pleasant and relaxing. However, be careful not to go too dark, especially in a small room.

Light green is energetic, lively, and vibrant. It meshes perfectly with both light and dark brown furniture, especially if you throw in some dark green accent details.

5. Go Boldly Where Only a Few Dare to Go

Bold, bright colors make great accents — we all know that. But these colors, such as bright orange, fuschia, and turquoise, can also be fantastic choices for your walls. Yes, they are loud and radiant and might even be overbearing at times. However, they can still be used as wall paint colors if you balance them out.

Consider using decorative wallpaper that has a combination of bolder and more subdued tones of fuschia, turquoise, or orange. You can do all four walls or pick one of them to be an accent wall while you paint the rest in a more low-key tone.

Either way, looking at a room decorated with bright colors combined with brown furniture will leave the impression of luscious springtime fruit trees. Imagine a glorious peach three with its dark brown bark and bright pink, orange, and purple flowers (or, even better, fruits!). Is there anything more aesthetically pleasing?

6. You Are My Sunshine (Yellow)

Warm, pleasant, and sunny yellow will make any room look brighter, roomier, and more comfortable. Yellow walls are ideal for small, dark rooms, as they give the illusion of natural light. Therefore, this might be the perfect choice for you if you’re redecorating a room that doesn’t get enough sunshine.

Most people would be afraid to put brown furniture in a small, dark room. Of course, there’s a significant risk of making the place look even more ominous and dungeon-like. Well, that’s simply not a possibility with bright sunny walls.

Bright yellow is pure. It reminds us of innocence and happiness. It’s also the perfect juxtaposition to the brown. However, if you think light yellow isn’t bold enough for your inner interior designer, you can always go with the deeper shades like mustard and medallion yellow.

7. Luxury in Royal Purple

Purple and brown is a potent combination. However, it can also be a winning one if you play your (sample color) cards right.

Not every shade of purple will work. In fact, only a few of them will give you the desired luxurious, exquisite effect you’re probably going for. Bright purple or lavender will never accentuate brown as well as plum purple will. Plum is deep and plush, just like brown, so the combined effect will look like pure opulence.

This combination is especially suitable for small, frequently used spaces like powder rooms. Why go the boring route when you can have a plum brown bathroom, right?

8. Powder Rose Femininity

If you think that purple and brown are too intense or loud for you, I don’t blame you. That particular combination can sometimes be overwhelming. That’s why my next suggestion is a mellower version, the younger sister, or even a distant cousin of the powerful purple-brown combination — powder-rose and brown.

Powder rose is a soft color that exudes femininity. It’s innocent, inconspicuous, and yet elegant and luxurious at the same time. Much like lavender or any of the pastel colors, powder rose gives out that romantic old-time vibe of a lady’s chambers.

Although some might classify this combination as too girly, I think that’s a great injustice. Powder rose is pleasant to the eye and ideal for bedrooms, as it’s not too harsh or too bland.

9. Embrace the Latest Trends

If you haven’t hopped on the “mint” train that first came into our lives back in 2015, maybe now is a perfect time. Mint is a fantastic shade that beautifully complements brown furniture, which is why it found its way on my list.

A colder tone by nature, mint is refreshing and natural-looking. What’s more, it is an ideal balance between masculine and feminine colors, given that it’s a more refreshing tone while also being gentle.

You can go for a more greeny mint or one that’s bluer. Either way, the brown furniture will be almost overshadowed by this fantastic color. Since it’s an attractive shade, mint walls and cozy brown furniture make an ideal combination for both living rooms and bedrooms.

10. Opulence in Copper and Gold

Copper and gold are rich, luxurious colors that are also whimsical and magical. I know that’s a lot of attributes, but gold and copper sparkle and shine, especially when paired with deep, chocolate-like brown furniture.

Aside from bringing a bit of much-needed sparkle in your life, gold and copper (which you can even use as individual colors or combine them for a more powerful “wow” effect) are also bold. A room with gold walls and brown furniture is no ordinary room — it’s a statement — a masterpiece if you will.

If you opt to paint your walls in these colors, I also recommend making them a bit textured. You’ll add dimension and depth to the room, and the brown furniture will stand out even more (if that’s even possible). Of course, you can always go for the toned-down version of this combination and paint just one or two walls while making the others more subtle.

2. Unbox the package. When removing your light switch guard from the packaging, you have to pay attention to avoid tearing the documentation and any instructions. It’s also a good idea to be careful with the packaging so you won’t have any problems returning the switch guards if they don’t work well for you.
3. Position the light switch cover for installation. Push up slightly on the front cover. You need to ensure the arrows on the front side, and the backplate is facing upwards. Move the front cover, so it slides up around a ¼” (0.64 cm).
4. Separate the front side from the back cover. Slowly remove the front cover from both sides around the bottom to open the locking mechanism. Once done, squeeze the front cover from both sides closer to the top to remove the back cover completely.
5. Take out the screws from the switch plate with the screwdriver. However, you don’t have to remove the switch plate, as it should be on the light switch. You also need to retain the screws. Don’t throw away the screws on the light switch, as you’re likely to use them later when you uninstall the light switch cover in the future when you no longer need the child-proofing.
6. Install the back cover of the light switch protector over your light switch. Check to confirm that the arrow is still turned upwards, and then gently put the backplate over the light switch. Use the screws that came with your packaging to screw the backplate into position.
7. Install the front cover on your light switch. Again, check to confirm that the signal arrow is pointing upwards. Put the front cover of the protector on the switch backplate and squeeze it gently before sliding it into its position.

With the light switch protector installed, you can now put your finger under the front cover whenever you want to use the switch. It’ll be hard for your child to do the same.

2. Install a DIY Cover on Your Light Switch

If you’d rather not spend money on a light switch protector, you can make yours at home. Here are the steps to make your DIY light switch cover:

1. Cut out a plastic cover. The plastic cover you cut out needs to be long enough to cover the switch plate. Increase the measurement a bit to ensure the covering can protect the light switch from your toddler while still allowing you enough room to maneuver the switch. You may need to cut out a slightly bigger plastic piece if you have rocker switches instead of toggle switches.
2. Decorate the cutout. You can do without this step, but it’s nice to decorate the cut out to ensure it fits with the rest of your décor. You can skip this step if you use clear plastic, as the cover won’t stand out too much in that scenario. If you choose to decorate, be sure to avoid going overboard with it. If it looks too much fun, your child will likely find it attractive.
3. Open holes in the cutout. Remove the screws holding the light switch and position the plastic piece over the switch face to highlight positions for the screws. Use the screwdriver to punch holes around the positions you’ve mapped out for the screws. You can also use the screws to make the holes.
4. Affix the cover into position. Place your DIY cover over the light switch, making sure to line it up against the holes, then insert the screws and tighten them to hold the cover in place.
5. After tightening the cover in place, you can access the switch from the side of the cover to use the switch. If your child finds a way around the cover, you can consider making the cover bigger.

3. Cover the Switch Temporarily

One approach you can consider if you don’t want to buy any light switch covers or construct one is to cover up the switch temporarily. It sounds drastic, but it may be your only choice with some children, which might make sense if you don’t need regular access to the switch.

All you need to do is find a small plastic cover, turn on the switch, cover it up and hold the cover in place with some tape. You may also use the tape directly on the light switch by taping down the switch in the position of your choice, which might either be switched off or on.

When you need access to the switch, you can peel off the tape and replace it when you’re done.

It’s not the most flexible approach to use, but it gets the job done.

4. Block Off Access to the Switch

The previous solutions are all focused on protecting the switch directly. However, you can also child-proof a light switch indirectly by blocking off access to it. Think of some practical ways to make it harder for your child to reach the switch.

Here are some examples:

• Hide the switch behind a flower vase. You can strategically position a flower vase such that the plant can cover the switch. The plant doesn’t have to be real if you don’t want the stress of caring for one. A vase filled with artificial flowers can do a good job of covering up the switch.
• Move the chair. Do you have a chair or cushion that gives your child a leg up to reach the switch? Consider moving it away from the wall if it’s practical. A few futile attempts to reach the switch and the child will most likely forget about it.
• Move your bookshelf. You can also use your bookshelf to cover the switch. Draw it towards the switch, leaving enough space for your fingers to slide in, and turn the switch on or off when you need it.
• Use decorative camouflage. If you’re good with paintings, you can paint over the light switch with some art that blends into the décor. Use colors to hide the switch properly, and you’re good to go.

Blocking off access to the switch works well with children because they tend to operate on an “out of sight, out of mind” principle. If they don’t see the switch, they’re unlikely to play with it.

Other Ways to Keep Your Child Away From the Light Switch

Some additional approaches for keeping your child away from the light switch include the following:

• Talk to them about the dangers of playing with a light switch. You can teach your child the risks associated with using the light switch as a plaything, depending on their age. It’s not going to catch on immediately, but with a few of your parenting skills, you can get results. Approaches like rewarding good behavior will never go out of style.
• Keep the child busy. What other toys do they love to play with? Can you get them outdoors a bit more? If the child is getting enough playtime and has other toys to stay busy with, you may not have to spend too much time chasing them away from the light switch.

Final Thoughts

Child-proofing a light switch is all about keeping the child away from the switch. Light switch covers, branded and DIY, are the most common approaches adopted, but with a little bit of creativity, you can make the switch out of reach for your child.

Grouting sooner halts the curing process, causing tiles to loosen and crack.

However, if it dries too quickly, the grout becomes soft and bears a chalky surface that’s water-absorbent. As it absorbs moisture, the grout swells, cracks, and eventually falls off.

Sealing the grout should also happen once the grout is completely dry. Once you install your tiles, give the grout a minimum of 48 – 72 hours to dry and cure. After they dry, you can touch up the grout, then allow for an extra 48- 72 hours before sealing the grout.

The sealer should take around 24 hours to cure, though some types can go up to 48 hours. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure you give it adequate time. To test whether your sealer has dried fully, sprinkle some water along the grout line.

If the grout is dry, the water drops should accumulate on the grout line. But if it gets absorbed, the grout isn’t fully dry, and you’d need to reapply the sealer as soon as possible.

Does Grout Dry Faster in Heat or Cold?

Grout generally dries faster when it’s hot. The higher the humidity levels, the longer grout takes to cure; thus, it takes more time to dry during cold weather. For best results, install grout when temperatures are between 50-100ºF (10- 37.7°C) and after the bonding mortar has cured adequately.

On the same note, the amount of time your grout mixture takes to cure also depends on the powder and water temperature. Generally, hot water and powder grout mixtures cure much faster than cold ones. Still, a grout mixture composed of elements with high temperatures results in a shorter working time.

While it’s easy to meet the temperature requirements when performing indoor installations using modern HVAC systems, it’s not that easy to control temps with exterior projects. As a result, it generally takes longer for grout to dry outside than indoors because of the humidity, rain, snow, or cold.

Other Factors That Affect the Drying Time

Other than heat or cold, several other factors dictate the amount of time needed for your grout to set. These include the following:

The Type of Grout

The type of grout you choose has a significant impact on the drying time. For instance, standard cement grouts typically take a longer time (24-72 hours) to cure — especially during cold weather — while epoxy grouts take a relatively shorter period since they don’t necessarily require sealing.

Grout packaging typically contains all the information you need on usage, including recommendations on how long the grout needs to cure.

Let us take a brief look at the different types of grout available in the market:

• Cementitious grout. The use of cementitious grout is common in residential projects. Cement-based grout is easy to use and consists of water mixed with a sand-like mixture to form a paste. The grout also contains an additive that retains water, keeping it moist and slowing down the drying period for maximum hardness.
• Epoxy grout. Epoxy grout takes an average of 24 hours to dry. Though expensive, this durable grout is resistant to cracks, weather changes, stains, and chemicals. Also, it comes with epoxy resin and hardener, making it suitable for tiles that suffer exposure to harsh materials such as acid or grease. Since it dries fast, it’s relatively challenging to apply. Fortunately, it installs quickly as it doesn’t always require sealing.
• Sanded vs. unsanded grout. Sanded grout is most suitable for wide gaps (above ⅛”) or floor tiles because it hardly shrinks or cracks. On its part, unsanded grout is smooth and easy to apply, making it ideal for vertical surfaces that aren’t more than ⅛” wide.
• Urethane grout. These are pricey grouts that come premixed in buckets. Once you use the amount you need, you can save the rest to use later. If you’re considering using urethane grout in your shower, note that you might need to make special arrangements for your baths since it requires 7 days to cure.
• Furan grout. Furan grout consists of fortified alcohol polymers and takes about 24 hours to set. While drying, it forms a thermosetting resin resistant to strong chemicals and high temperatures. It’s commonly used in quarry tile, brick pavers, and industrial settings like commercial kitchens.

Humidity Levels

Another factor that impacts the time it takes for grout to dry is humidity. For instance, bathroom grout takes longer to dry than kitchen grout, while grout applications in tropical climates take longer compared to those done in desert climates.

The moisture content in the air slows down the grout’s drying and hardening process. Therefore, you need to allow for additional time before attempting to walk on the tile.

So, if you’re installing bathroom tiles, for instance, wait for 2 to 3 days, seal, allow the seal to dry as per the manufacturer’s guidelines, then use the shower.

Indoor Plants

Indoor plants like the lily or philodendron release moisture into the atmosphere. This raises the level of humidity in your home, and as mentioned earlier, the higher the amount of moisture in the air, the longer it’ll take your grout to set.

Indoor vs. Outdoor

As mentioned previously, outdoor grout takes longer to dry compared to indoor grout due to humidity, rain, and snow. While it can take a minimum of a day for grout to dry indoors, outdoor grout can take up to 7 days, even in fair weather.

How Can You Make Grout Dry Faster?

To cure, grout undergoes a chemical reaction. This means there’s little you can do to speed up the curing process. That said, there are several things you can do to make sure that the curing doesn’t slow down owing to external factors, thus hastening the drying.

Here are some valuable tips and tricks to speed up drying when carrying out indoor or outdoor grouting:

• Check the weather. Before commencing your outdoor project, ensure that the minimum temperatures for the next 7 days will be about 50°F (10°C).
• Cover the area. To protect your outdoor grout work from extreme weather, make sure to cover the area tenting but allow for a foot of space for airflow.
• Minimize moisture levels. To reduce humidity indoors, switch on the AC, fan, or dehumidifier and get rid of indoor plants. The fan or AC helps to spread air across your floor or walls, ensuring they dry up.
• Use a faster drying mortar (or an admix designed to speed cure time).
• Protect high-traffic areas. If grouting a high traffic area, like the kitchen, cover it with blankets, then lay the area with plywood once the mortar sets sufficiently. Doing so won’t only provide a safety buffer, but it’ll dramatically minimize the force placed on the tiles.

Can You Dry Grout With a Hair Dryer?

While a hairdryer can help speed up the drying process, it’s not advisable to use this method to dry your grout. The grout will dry too fast and end up cracking. The best thing to do is to let the grout dry naturally. 

By forcing your grout to dry faster than usual, you heighten its likelihood to weaken, loosen, crack and eventually fall off. This is because it doesn’t get ample time to cure and adhere properly to the tile. Besides, the heat from the hairdryer will only dry the surface, leaving the inside uncured.

How Long Does Grout Take to Dry to True Color?

Grout takes a minimum of 24 hours to dry. Usually, the manufacturer indicates on the packaging how long the grout will take. But if your package has no information, wait for at least a day or two for the grout to turn the right color.

Sealed grout often appears wet due to its sheen. But while applying grout sealer might darken the color of your grout a shade or two, it doesn’t change it.

Allow your grout to dry for about 3 days, then compare the color with the one shown on the packaging. Initially, the grout looks dark but continues to lighten after a day or two, depending on the temperature and humidity. By the third day, it should be uniformly colored with no light and dark spots.

Once the water dries up, grout goes back to its original color — the color of the dry powder. Note that if you use a lot of water when mixing the powder, it can dilute the color, resulting in a lighter-colored grout.

Color variation occurs because of uneven drying of the cement within the grout. If your grout doesn’t dry to the correct hue, you can apply a lacquer thinner to help lighten it and disguise uneven coloring. To get your grout to dry to the exact color you want, try the following:

• After installation, have your tile contractor use a dye to color your grout to your desired shade.
• You can decide to change the color of your grout lines — whatever the type — to your preferred color even after sealing.
• Customize the color by carrying out a spot test to ensure that the final color is what you want.
• To achieve an exact match and color uniformity when using darker shades, consider color sealing your grout.

Finally, it’s important to point out that grout tends to darken with time. This is particularly so for cement-based grout in high-traffic areas. Unsealed grout can also seem darker when wet, but the color evens out eventually once the grout cures completely.

However, if you notice your grout turning black, the most likely cause is washing the floor tiles with excess water and detergent. The dirt that gets washed off the floor usually accumulates in the grout joints, finally causing your grout to look dark.

Black grout could also turn grey if too much water gets used when cleaning up the grouting, thus diluting the concrete and colored pigment ratio. As it dries, the grout will have less color, meaning gray, the color of the concrete will become the prominent color.

Final Thoughts

Replacing your tiles can help spruce up your home in a big way. But to do this right and ensure your handiwork lasts for long, you need to ensure that the grout cures well. This does not necessarily mean that a light switch is always within arms reach, but it does mean that for both the switch operator and the electrician, one could look at a switch and take a good guess as to what it is controlling.

For example, if you walk into a new house and you’re met with two switches, chances are they control the porch and hall lights. If they don’t, but rather control the kitchen and upstairs hallway, they don’t meet NEC standards.

Though not incredibly precise, the standard certainly makes sense.

However, the NEC does dictate that while there is no minimum height for light switches, they should generally be below six feet, seven inches above the floor.

If it is next to or slightly above the equipment it is operating; the light switch can be above that threshold. Still, you must have a readily accessible, portable means of reaching the light available for any operator to use.

ADA Standards

The ADA’s standards for light switches are much more stringent than NEC’s as the ADA’s standards are codified in law.

For example, the Fair Housing Act stipulates that from the floor to the middle of the panel, the light switch should not exceed 48 inches, that way, it is accessible for someone who uses a wheelchair.

It also sets that the minimum height should be no less than 15 inches.

The ADA also states that if the light switch is located directly above a counter, there are different conditions it should meet.

For example, if the switch is over a counter with knee space built into it, and the counter’s depth exceeds 20 inches, then the standard height of the light switch is reduced to 44 inches above the floor.

The ADA’s final stipulation is for a switch above a counter that does not have knee space built in. If this is the case, then the counter’s width should not exceed 24 inches, and the maximum allowed height for the light switch is 46 inches above the ground.

Standard Light Switch Heights in Specific Instances

The above standards are the general guidelines for installing light switches. However, there are some specific instances in which the installation of light switches should meet different requirements.

Below are the most common exceptions to these guidelines:

• Light switches above counters: When it comes to light switches directly above counters, the recommended height is about 40 inches above the floor. This is assuming that the counter is at the standard height of 36 inches above the ground.
• Garbage disposal switches: For Garbage Disposal switches, the same standards for switches above counters are recommended. If the button needs to be under or next to the sink, it should be at the highest possible point to prevent bending over.
• Furnace disconnect switches: Furnace disconnect switches are often recommended to be slightly higher to be very clearly different from other switches. Some people prefer these between 40 and 52 inches above the ground, but this is really a judgment call.
• Switches for pools and hot tubs: Light switches or other operating switches for pools, hot tubs, or other sorts of whirlpools should be five feet away from the body of water, according to NEC. This is a safety measure to prevent anyone in the water from operating the switch. It is also a good idea to raise the height of these switches, so it is harder for children to reach them.
• Instances where many switches are required: Sometimes, you might encounter a situation in which you have many light switches needed to control the lighting and appliances in an area. In this case, it is best to use a gangled light switch – a panel that collects several switches. This is designed to prevent an operator from going back and forth too many times.
• Bedside light switches: Some people like to have a light switch next to their bed so that they can quickly turn on and off the lights without needing to get out of bed. In this case, there is no applicable standard height. However, it is generally recommended that the switch is no more than shoulder height when you are laying down. However, “shoulder height” will depend on the height of your bed frame.

Why Do Standard Heights Exist for Outlets?

Regarding standard heights for outlets, you might realize that this regulation seems a little relaxed.

The standard height for outlets exists as a guide for electricians and builders, but there are no laws regarding these regulations. They are more a matter of standardization and convenience, not for safety or accessibility reasons. That is why sometimes outlets can seem to be random.

Generally, it is easiest for people to use an outlet that is about a foot off the floor, simply because most products that need to be plugged in either rest on the ground or have cords long enough to reach the ground.

Suppose you are using an item that often belongs on a countertop, and you want easy access to an outlet. In that case, it is recommended that an outlet be placed about four inches above the countertop.

If you have an outlet near a source of water, they should also have an automatic “kill switch” installed for safety reasons.

In other instances, such as at event venues, you may see outlets on the floor, up very high on a wall, or even on the ceiling. This is because the equipment used in these venues often is placed in different spots, so having an outlet easily accessible to an accessory hanging from the ceiling, for example, makes sense.

Mark Where the Anchors Will Go

Decide where on the wall you want your mirror. Here are the steps on how to do this.

1. Mark in pencil where the top of the mirror frame will be.
2. If you’re using picture wire, take a piece of scrap wood (or any object with a level surface) and place it under the wire.
3. Move the wood up toward the top of the mirror frame until the wire is pulled taut. This will mimic the force of the mirror hanging on the wall.
4. Measure the distance between the taut wire and the top of the frame. Use that measurement to make a mark on your wall below your first mark.
5. Hold your piece of wood on that lower mark. Make sure it is level.
6. Use the edges of your wood to mark on your wall where your anchors will go. These two marks need to be level.
7. If you’re using D-rings, mark where the top of your mirror frame will be on the wall.
8. Measure the distance between the two D-rings.
9. Measure the distance between the top of the mirror and the D-rings.

With these measurements, you should be able to mark on the wall where the two D-rings will be in relation to the top of your mirror.

Drill Pilot Holes

Pilot holes are small holes that help you guide screws or anchors into place.

Using a power drill, drill pilot holes in these two marks. Your drill bit should be smaller than the size of the anchor. For example, you should use a 0.25-inch drill bit for a 1-inch anchor.

Refer to the instructions that come with your anchor kit if you are unsure of what size drill bit to use.

Install the Anchors

Insert the anchors into the pilot holes. You may find this easiest by tapping them with a rubber mallet. The collar of the anchors should be flush with your wall.

Use a screwdriver to insert the screws into the anchors. Turning the screws will cause the anchors to expand in your wall, making them more secure.

Do not screw them all the way into the wall. Leave between 0.25-inch and 1/2-inch of the screw sticking out so that you can hang your mirror on the screws.

Hang the Mirror

Lift your mirror and hang the wire or D-rings on the anchored screws. If your mirror is especially heavy, you may want a partner to help with this step. A partner can also look behind the mirror to help guide you. Remember, when it comes to home improvement, four hands are usually better than two.

1. Mark on your wall in pencil where the top of your mirror will go.
2. If your mirror has D-rings, measure the distance between them.
3. Then measure the distance between the rings and the top of the mirror.
4. Use those measurements to mark on your wall where the D-rings will go.
5. If your mirror has picture wire, take a piece of scrap wood (or any sturdy, level object) and place it under the wire. Lift the object toward the top of the mirror frame to pull the wire taut.
6. Measure the distance from the top of the frame to the taut wire, and mark it on your wall.
7. Then use the edges of your level object to make two marks where you want your hooks to go.

While hanging a mirror with picture wire on a single hook is possible, using two hooks helps distribute the weight more evenly.

Insert the Hooks

Poke the straight, pointy end of one hook into the mark on your wall. Firmly push the hook upward through the drywall. You may have to rotate the hook to insert it completely.

Push until the small hook is the only visible part. Refer to the instructions on the packaging if you’re having trouble. 

Repeat for the other mark on your wall.

Hang the Mirror

Carefully lift your mirror, and ask a partner for help if necessary. Hang your mirror on the hooks by the D-rings or picture wire. You may want a friend to look behind the mirror to help ensure you’re guiding the mirror onto the hooks correctly.

3. Heavy-Duty Mounting Tape

Smaller mirrors can be mounted with traditional mounting tape, but heavy mirrors require stronger tape.

Clean the Wall

Thoroughly wipe down the wall where you want your mirror, especially if it is outside. Dirt and other small particles can interfere with the tape’s adhesive abilities. Don’t be afraid to wipe down the back of the mirror either. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Cut the Tape and Apply It to the Mirror

Start unrolling the tape. Cut sections of tape that will fit the edges of your mirror. Cut enough tape to cover the entire perimeter of your mirror or frame.

Apply the tape to the back of your mirror. Press down firmly on the tape to ensure there are no air bubbles trapped beneath it.

Install the Top Cleat to the Mirror

Referring to the instructions on your French cleat kit, attach the first cleat to the back of your mirror. Align the cleat with the top of your mirror.

Then, using a screwdriver, fasten the cleat with the provided screws.

Install the Bottom Cleat to the Wall

Again, refer to the instructions that come with your French cleats.

Use a stud finder to locate a stud in the wall where you want your mirror. Decide where on the stud you want the top of the mirror to sit. Make a mark in pencil just below that spot.
