Imagine this: You’ve planned a big get-together with friends or family, and all that’s left is setting the table. You pull out your plastic tablecloth, only to find it covered in stubborn folds and creases. Now what?

Good news: You can get wrinkles out of a plastic tablecloth using a few simple methods. Whether it’s smoothing them out by hand, hanging it in the sun, using a hairdryer on a cool setting, ironing it safely, or even tumble drying on low heat, there’s a solution for every situation.

I’ve spent plenty of time wrestling with wrinkled plastic tablecloths myself, but once I discovered these tricks, everything changed. Below, I’ll walk you through the easiest ways to remove wrinkles and share a few tips to help you keep your tablecloth looking its best.

Let’s set the table — and smooth things over!

1. Smooth It Out by Hand

The simplest (and safest) way to start tackling wrinkles is with your hands, no tools or heat required. This should always be your first move before trying more involved methods.

Start by giving the tablecloth a good shake to loosen up any light creases. Then, lay it out flat on a clean surface and gently smooth it out with your hands, pressing firmly over the folds. For extra stubborn spots, you can add light pressure using a flat object like a book — just be careful not to stretch the plastic.

If the wrinkles are minor, this quick fix might be all you need.

2. Let It Hang in the Sun

Got a clothesline or a sunny spot outside? Hanging your plastic tablecloth is one of the easiest and most hands-off ways to smooth out wrinkles — just let nature do the work.

Drape the tablecloth over a clothesline, porch railing, or balcony ledge, making sure it’s spread out as evenly as possible. The combination of sunlight and gravity will help relax the plastic and gently pull the folds out. For best results, place it in direct sunlight, but be patient — depending on the thickness and material, it might take a few hours.

No clothesline? No problem. Use any sturdy outdoor surface, just avoid shaded areas where the process will take much longer.

3. Blow the Wrinkles Away With a Hairdryer

If you’re short on time and need a quick fix, grab your hairdryer. With a little warm air and some gentle smoothing, you can flatten out those creases fast.

Here’s how to do it:

Lay your tablecloth flat on a table or ironing board. You can weigh down the corners with books or plates to keep it in place.

Set your hairdryer to the lowest heat setting and hold it about a foot away from the surface.

Slowly move the dryer back and forth across the wrinkled areas, keeping it in constant motion. Use your other hand to gently press and smooth the plastic as it warms.

Important: Never hold the hairdryer in one spot for too long as plastic can melt quickly! Keep the air moving and stay on the lowest setting to play it safe.

4. Iron It (the Right Way)

If you don’t have a hairdryer, you could always use an iron to remove the folds from your plastic tablecloth.

You will need the following items for this method:

Iron

Ironing board or large table

Clean, wet towels

Once you’ve gathered the above items, follow the steps below to remove the wrinkles:

Lay one or two damp towels on your ironing board or table to protect both the surface and the tablecloth.

Spread the tablecloth flat over the towels and smooth it out by hand.

Place another layer of damp towels on top of the tablecloth.

Set your iron to the lowest heat setting with steam enabled. Gently run the iron over the top towels, moving it steadily and not staying in one spot too long.

The steam and light pressure will help relax the plastic without risking damage. Check your progress by carefully lifting the top towel layer. If needed, replace and repeat until smooth.

Be extra cautious, a few seconds of heat should do the trick!

5. Place the Tablecloth in Your Dryer

Despite what common sense might suggest, you can put your plastic tablecloth in the dryer to get rid of the wrinkles. However, this is the most challenging heat method and poses the most significant risk to the tablecloth.

Here’s how to do it safely:

Set your dryer to the absolute lowest heat setting.

Toss in the plastic tablecloth along with a few damp towels (these help buffer the heat and create steam).

Run the dryer for just a few minutes at a time, checking frequently. As soon as the tablecloth warms up, take it out and smooth the wrinkles by hand while it’s still warm.

Repeat the process if needed, but never leave it unattended for long. Plastic can melt fast, and you don’t want it fusing to your towels (or your dryer!).

Alternatively, if the wrinkles are minor, you can drape the tablecloth over a running dryer (not inside it). The heat rising off the machine can help soften the folds. Just be sure to keep checking so nothing overheats or warps.

This method works, but it’s the most high-risk option. Use it as a last resort, and proceed with caution!

6. Use Steam From a Shower

Need a quick, low-effort fix? Let your shower do the work! Steam is a gentle way to relax wrinkles — no appliances required.

Here’s how:

After your shower, smooth out the remaining wrinkles by hand while the plastic is still warm and pliable.

Hang your plastic tablecloth in the bathroom over a towel bar, shower rod, or any spot where it can hang freely without bunching.

Run a hot shower with the door closed to trap the steam.

Let the steam build up for 10–15 minutes while the tablecloth softens.

Make sure the tablecloth isn’t touching the floor of the tub or wet surfaces — it just needs the steam, not a soak!

This is a great last-minute trick when you’re short on time or don’t want to mess with heat tools.

Wrinkled Plastic Tablecloth: FAQs

Now that you know how to smooth out wrinkles from a plastic tablecloth, let’s go over some frequently asked questions to help you care for it even better.

How Do I Prevent Wrinkles While Storing a Plastic Tablecloth?

The best way to prevent wrinkles is to store the tablecloth flat. While this takes up more space, it keeps creases from forming and saves you time later.

If flat storage isn’t an option, loosely roll the tablecloth instead of folding it. For extra protection, slide it into a mailing tube or wrap it in kraft paper to help it hold its shape.

If you must fold it:

Avoid stacking anything heavy on top.

Store it on top of other items, not underneath them.

Keep it in a low-compression area to reduce pressure on the folds.

A little care during storage goes a long way in keeping your tablecloth looking fresh and party-ready.

Is It Really Safe to Warm Plastic With an Iron or Dryer?

Yes, it can be safe — but only if you’re careful.

When we hear about the dangers of heating plastic, it’s usually in the context of food safety — like microwaving plastic containers, which can release harmful chemicals into food. With tablecloths, you’re not eating off them while they’re warm, so that concern doesn’t apply.

However, you still need to be cautious. Always use the lowest heat setting on your iron, dryer, or hairdryer, and check for any manufacturer guidelines on heat safety. Never leave the tablecloth unattended while applying heat.

Important: If part of the plastic melts, it can release fumes that aren’t safe to inhale. If that happens, take the damaged tablecloth outside immediately and let the space air out before cleaning up or disposing of it.

Bottom line? Low, controlled heat = okay. High, direct heat = risky.

I Accidentally Melted Part of the Tablecloth! Can I Repair It?

Unfortunately, the damage is already done. Unlike fabric, melted plastic can’t be patched or stitched, and the damage (holes, warping, or hardened spots) is usually permanent.

The upside? Plastic tablecloths are usually affordable and easy to replace, so it’s not a huge loss if one gets damaged.

If the melted plastic stuck to your table or ironing surface let it cool completely, then gently scrape it off. Be careful not to damage the surface underneath, but this is usually the safest and easiest cleanup method.

Lesson learned: go low and slow with the heat!

Are PVC Tablecloths the Same As Plastic Tablecloths?

Yes, in most cases. PVC (short for polyvinyl chloride) is a type of plastic, and many plastic tablecloths are made from it. In fact, when you see tablecloths labeled simply as “plastic,” there’s a good chance they’re made of PVC.

Manufacturers sometimes use the term “plastic” because it’s more familiar to shoppers, but PVC and plastic tablecloths are generally the same thing — durable, wipeable, and water-resistant.

Are Oilcloth Tablecloths Lined With Plastic?

While it’s true that they feature exterior layers of plastic, you cannot treat oilcloth the same way you would treat PVC. That’s because at its center is a heavy cotton sheet.

As a result, it needs to be cared for differently. Usually, an oilcloth tablecloth only needs to be wiped clean with a damp cloth.

Wrap-Up: Smooth Table, Smooth Vibes

Plastic may last forever, but wrinkles in your tablecloths don’t have to. With just the right mixture of heat and weight, you can press out the folds and creases just like you would with fabric.

If you follow our methods carefully, you can get years of use out of your plastic tablecloths — and they’ll look great, too!

Perhaps your blouse got crumpled in your carry-on while you were traveling, and the iron in your hotel room does not work? Or maybe you are still at home but do not actually have an iron? A wrinkled dress should be the last thing on your mind as you prepare to enter the conference room for an important presentation or meeting, but unfortunately, it does happen.

Without a doubt, a moment will arise when you’ll need quick ironing before leaving the house but won’t have an iron at hand. Of course, you can always turn to garment steamers. However, if you don’t own one, don’t worry — there are other options you could try. One hassle-free solution to remove creases from your clothes is with a hair dryer!

Fast Wrinkle Removal With a Hair Dryer

Already put your shirt on when you realized it has too many wrinkles to pass? No problem! You can iron your clothes with a hair dryer even if you are wearing them.

You will need:

Hair dryer

Water spray bottle (optional)

The process is simple: either put your clothes on or lay them flat on a bed or table. Then, use a spray bottle filled with water to lightly mist the garments.

But don’t worry if you don’t have a spray bottle at hand. Flick some water on your clothes to make them a bit damp instead. That will help you remove the persistent wrinkles.

Next, hold the clothes taut and turn on the hair dryer, pointing it to the creased, wet areas. It will only take seconds for you to start noticing the effect. If you don’t get the results on your first try, repeat the process until you are satisfied.

This trick works wonders for delicate fabrics and hard-to-iron skirts or dresses. That said, it would be best to lower the heat for delicate fabrics or silk, just as you would while ironing. On the other hand, you are free to turn on the highest heat for cotton clothing.

In a pinch, using your hair dryer to iron clothing can come in quite handy for items like knit dresses that may have shoulder dents from wire hangers. All you need to do in this situation is lay the dress flat or drape it over a chair or shower curtain rod and direct a stream of hot air over the wrinkles from approximately two inches away.

If there are any stubborn wrinkles left after you are done, you can always use a hair straightener to smooth them over. That will work wonders on a shirt collar, for instance.

A Few Words of Caution

While blow-drying the wrinkles out, be careful not to touch your clothing with the hair dryer, as that could cause the fabric to catch fire. Also, if you are using a hair straightener, use a moist towel to remove any remaining product before heating it up. That way, you will prevent greasy spots from appearing on your clothing.

Other No-Iron Methods to Try

Wrinkle Spray

Only a couple of minutes left before the meeting, and no hair dryer around to help you with creases? Try using a wrinkle spray.

Spray the trouble spots and allow them to air dry. Along with wrinkles, this also gets rid of static and unpleasant odors.

Steam in the Bathroom

The shower can be your first line of defense against wrinkles when you go to a hotel for a business conference. In many cases, it works better than using an iron.

For best results, try hanging your wrinkled clothing in the bathroom while you shower. If they seem damp afterward, allow your clothes to air dry in the closet with the door open before putting them on.

Laundry Dryer

Putting your laundry dryer on the steam setting can also help you remove wrinkles. The dryer will shoot a burst of steam at your clothing, swiftly smoothing out any creases as it tosses your clothes around. The results are acceptable, but it doesn’t give that crisp, just-out-of-the-cleaner look, and it works best on small loads.

You can use your dryer to reduce wrinkles even if it doesn’t have a steam cycle. Put a few ice cubes and the wrinkled clothing in the dryer, and then run it on high heat for a short while. The creases will subside when the ice melts and turns into steam.

Final Thoughts

You only need a little bit of water and a hair dryer to be wrinkle-free and ready to conquer the world. Visit our website for more cool tips regarding your laundry.

Have you ever noticed brownish-red stains whose origins you can’t quite pinpoint on your white clothes? When you try to remove them, you realize that they are particularly stubborn — no amount of washing seems to have any effect. In fact, it’s starting to seem like the only solution left is throwing your clothes out.

Before you take such drastic measures, let us help you. The stubborn stains in question are likely rust stains — more difficult to clean than regular stains but not impossible to deal with. On the contrary, the four ways listed here are bound to be effective!

1. Lemon Juice and Salt

As a safe bleaching agent and a natural cleaner, lemon juice is an excellent stain remover. If combined with salt, a liquid-absorbing abrasive, it becomes even more powerful, dealing with rust stains in a matter of hours. On top of that, this gentle formula doesn’t damage white fabrics and may even be used on colored ones.

To use this cleaning method, just sprinkle some salt directly on the rust stain and pour lemon juice over the salt. Then, lay the clothes out to dry, preferably outside in the sun. The ultraviolet rays will speed up the stain removal process and act as natural bleach.

After a few hours, when the garments dry, check whether the stain is gone. If it’s still visible, repeat the process until you’re satisfied with the result.

2. Tartar, Baking Soda, and Hydrogen Peroxide

As an alternative to the lemon juice and salt method, use a paste made of tartar, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide. Even on its own, tartar cream is a mild cleaner. But mixed with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, it becomes a powerful rust stain remover. When used correctly, the paste should dissolve the stain in only thirty minutes.

To make the paste, mix one teaspoon of tartar cream and one teaspoon of baking soda with a few drops of hydrogen peroxide. While this mixture might cause discoloration on darker clothes, it should be perfectly safe for white garments. After applying it, let it sit for thirty minutes, then rinse the fabric thoroughly. If the stain is still there after air-drying, you’ll have to repeat the process.

3. Commercial Rust Removers

If you’re not particularly concerned about whether your rust removers are natural or not, try using commercial removers, like this one from Magica. They are highly effective, though safe only for white and colorfast clothing, as they may damage and discolor other fabrics.

All commercial rust removers come with instructions, so make sure to read them carefully and follow them closely. In most cases, you’ll need to apply the remover directly to the stain, leave it there for a few seconds, and then rinse it off.

Be careful when handling chemical rust cleaners, though. They are highly toxic and may cause burns, so don’t let them come in contact with your bare skin.

4. Gentle Removers for Delicate Fabrics

When removing rust from delicate garments and fabrics, you need to use gentle stain removers.

Silk

To ensure silk retains its quality, pour some lemon juice on the stain and sprinkle salt on it. That may seem like a familiar technique, but instead of letting the garment air-dry in the sun, rinse the solution with warm water after five minutes. If necessary, repeat the process a few times. Once the stain is gone, apply some white vinegar to help bring back the silk’s former shine.

Wool

If rust stains appear on your favorite wool sweater, blot them with club soda. Then apply lemon juice and salt paste. Wait until the solution dries, then remove it and check the results.

If the stain is still there, mix two tablespoons of dishwashing liquid with 1/3 cup of white vinegar and a cup of water. Soak a clean cloth in the solution and dab it onto the stain. Once the stain is gone, let the wool garment air-dry.

Causes of Recurring Rust Stains

If you regularly find rust stains on your clothes, even after removing them, the issue might require some further examination. To make sure they disappear once and for all, you need to figure out the exact cause and eliminate it. Here are the places you should investigate.

Washing Machines

Although most modern washing machines come with stainless steel tubs, older ones may still have steel tubs with a porcelain finish. Over time, this finish can chip away, letting water get to the steel. As a result, rust will form and stain your white clothes during washing.

To check your washing machine, take a look inside with the help of a flashlight. If you see any rusty areas, you have found your culprit. To fix it, use appliance touch-up paint and apply several coats to fully cover the chips and scratches. Once it dries, you can use your washing machine as you normally do.

Water Heaters

Iron deposits frequently build up in older water heaters, causing them to rust. Over time, rust particles can break loose and travel to your washing machine, staining your laundry. If you suspect your water heater is rusty, it’s best to call a plumber. They will look into the issue and clean your heater if necessary.

Dryers

Much like washing machines, dryers may have steel drums with a porcelain or enamel finish. As mentioned before, the finish can chip away over time, exposing the steel underneath.

When you put damp laundry in a dryer with a chipped drum, the moisture seeps through the cracks and causes the metal to rust. If you suspect your clothes dryer to be the culprit, inspect it carefully, detect all the cracks, and use appliance touch-up paint to fix them.

Water Pipes

If everything else seems to be in order, yet you still find rust stains all over your clothes, your water pipes might be responsible. Typically, water has high levels of iron, causing the older cast iron pipes to corrode. If possible, consider replacing them with copper or PVC pipes, which are far more popular nowadays.

But if you can’t afford to replace your entire plumbing system just to avoid rust stains, you can try water filters. They should minimize the amount of iron and other rust-causing minerals in your water, helping you keep your clothes clean and stain-free.

A Few Additional Tips

Don’t Wash, Bleach, or Dry Clothes With Rust Stains

When you see a rust stain on your white garment, your first instinct might be to throw it into the washing machine. Unfortunately, that won’t make much of a difference — washing machines typically can’t remove this kind of stain.

Next, you could think of applying bleach, which is usually quite an effective stain remover. But in this case, bleach will only make things worse. This cleaning agent tends to make rust stains permanent instead of whitening them.

In addition, avoid putting clothes with rust stains in the dryer, as the heat may set the stain, making it impossible to remove later. In other words, you need to try one of the above-mentioned rust-removing methods before you do your laundry.

Test Your Cleaning Solutions Before Using Them

First and foremost, it’s essential to read the labels on your clothes. That way, you will know how to properly care for your garments and what chemicals may have adverse effects. But even if you think your cleaning solution is perfectly safe, it’s best to test it beforehand. If you do, you won’t have to worry about ruining your fabrics.

To test a cleaning solution, apply a bit to an inconspicuous part of the garment you want to treat. For instance, dab a few drops on the inside of a sleeve or a seam and leave it there for a few minutes. If there are no adverse effects, you can use your stain-removing mixture freely.

Be Gentle

Rubbing a stain vigorously may seem like an effective way to remove it, but it could do more harm than good. If you’re too harsh, you may wear away the fabric fibers.

Instead, use a white towel blotting method for maximum effect. Once you’ve rinsed off the fabric after treating it, gently dab it with a white towel to remove the rust stain. You’ll be able to see your progress on the towel by checking how much of the rust has transferred.

The Quicker You Are, the Better

If you spot the rust stain early on and treat it quickly, you’re much more likely to remove it entirely. After all, if you let it sit, it might set into the fabric permanently. So, make sure to check your clothes for stains regularly!

Final Thoughts

Now that you know how to effectively remove rust stains, you’ll no longer feel dread when you spot them on your white clothes. Choose the most suitable method and watch your garments restore their former brightness once again!

Your clothes are more than just fabric — they’re an expression of your style and personality. Keeping them vibrant and fresh, however, can feel like a challenge with every wash and wear.

But preserving your wardrobe doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few thoughtful changes to your laundry routine, you can prevent fading, extend the life of your clothes, and even reduce your environmental footprint.

From separating colors to using natural fabric protectors, this guide will show you simple, effective ways to keep your clothes looking their best for years to come.

1. Separate Laundry by Color

Sorting your laundry into color-coded piles is an essential step for proper laundry care. While it may seem like an extra chore, it can prevent the frustration of ruined clothes. Colors, particularly darker ones, can bleed during washing, leaving lighter fabrics stained and dull.

To prevent this, simply categorize your laundry:

Whites: This includes items like T-shirts, socks, underwear, and light-colored linens. To keep them bright, consider adding a whitening agent or oxygen bleach (never chlorine bleach for delicate fabrics).

Blacks: Items that are jet black or very dark gray should be washed separately to maintain their color depth and prevent fading from dye transfer.

Bright colors: Reds, yellows, oranges, and neon hues fall into this category. These colors tend to bleed easily, so washing them together will prevent discoloration of lighter fabrics.

Dark colors: Navy, forest green, maroon, and other deep shades belong in this pile. While less likely to bleed than brights, they can still transfer dye, especially when new.

If you’re dealing with multi-colored items or patterns, like a white shirt with bold red stripes, err on the side of caution and wash them separately. This approach minimizes the risk of ruining your clothes while maintaining their original vibrancy.

2. Wash in Cold Water Whenever Possible

When it comes to preserving color and fabric integrity, cold water is your best friend. Hot water is known to cause dyes to loosen and fade, especially in bright or dark fabrics. Plus, heat can weaken fibers over time, leading to shrinkage and wear.

Cold water, however, minimizes dye bleeding and helps clothes maintain their vibrancy through multiple washes. It’s also gentler on delicate fabrics such as lace, silk, or activewear.

For even better results, consider using a detergent designed specifically for cold water. These detergents dissolve fully at lower temperatures, ensuring your clothes come out clean without any residue left behind.

However, for heavily soiled items or those requiring sanitization (like towels and bed linens), it’s a good idea to use warm water occasionally — just be sure to follow the care label instructions.

3. Read the Labels

The care labels on your clothes might seem like an afterthought, but they’re your roadmap to keeping your wardrobe in pristine condition. Here’s what to look for:

Washing instructions: Look for icons indicating water temperature, recommended wash cycles, and whether the item can be machine or hand-washed. For example, some fabrics like wool or silk require cold water and gentle cycles to prevent shrinkage or distortion.

Drying guidelines: Labels will tell you if the item should be air-dried, tumble-dried on low heat, or laid flat to avoid stretching. Ignoring these instructions could lead to irreversible damage.

Ironing and bleaching: A quick glance at the label will let you know if an item can be ironed or bleached, which is crucial for maintaining its color and structure.

Take the time to check these labels while sorting your laundry. For newer or expensive items, this step is especially critical — it can mean the difference between a long-lasting favorite and an unintentional one-time wear.

4. Don’t Overstuff the Washer

Overloading your washing machine might seem efficient, but it’s one of the quickest ways to damage your clothes and compromise cleaning quality.

Clothes need space to move freely in the drum to allow water, detergent, and softener to circulate properly. When the washer is overloaded, some items may not get fully cleaned, leaving behind dirt and detergent residue.

Additionaly, packed clothes rub against each other more during the wash cycle, causing friction that can lead to pilling, fading, and even small tears.

A good rule of thumb is to leave about a hand’s width of space between the top of the laundry pile and the drum’s lid or top edge. This ensures your clothes are cleaned thoroughly and gently.

5. Turn Clothes Inside-Out

Turning your clothes inside-out before washing and drying is a simple yet effective trick for preserving their appearance. Here’s why it works…

The outer layers of your clothes are the most visible and prone to wear. The friction from washing machine agitation, combined with detergent and water exposure, can cause fading and thinning of the fabric. By flipping clothes inside-out, you allow the inner layers to absorb the impact instead.

This is especially important for clothes with prints, embroidery, or embellishments. Washing inside-out helps prevent damage to these delicate details and minimizes the risk of cracking or peeling of printed designs.

When drying clothes outdoors, prolonged exposure to sunlight can fade colors. Turning garments inside-out protects the visible side, allowing the less noticeable inner fabric to bear the brunt of the sun’s effects.

This simple habit is especially beneficial for darker items, denim, and clothes with vibrant prints. It’s an easy, no-cost way to extend the life of your wardrobe.

6. Add Vinegar to the Wash

White vinegar is a laundry hack that has stood the test of time. While its sharp smell might give you pause, the benefits it brings to fabric care are hard to ignore.

Adding a cup of white vinegar during the rinse cycle helps lock in the dyes of your clothes, keeping them vibrant wash after wash. This is especially helpful for bright and dark garments prone to fading.

Vinegar also acts as a natural fabric softener, leaving clothes feeling soft and comfortable without the added cost of commercial softeners. Not to mention it neutralizes odors, leaving clothes smelling fresh once they’re dry.

To use, simply add a single cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. For particularly stubborn smells or heavy fabrics, you can soak the garment in a vinegar-water solution (one part vinegar to three parts water) for 30 minutes before washing.

And don’t worry — the sharp vinegar scent vanishes once your clothes are dry.

7. Avoid Overuse of Dryers and Sunlight

Dryers and sunlight might be convenient ways to dry clothes quickly, but they can take a serious toll on fabric longevity. That’s why it’s worth reconsidering their overuse.

The intense heat from dryers can weaken fibers over time, leading to shrinkage, loss of elasticity, and fading. Even on lower heat settings, frequent use can cause gradual wear.

And while sunlight acts as a natural disinfectant and drying agent, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can bleach and fade colors. Dark and bright fabrics are particularly susceptible to this damage.

To avoid these pitfalls, try these alternatives:

Air-drying indoors: Use a drying rack or hang clothes on hangers inside. This method ensures even drying without risking color fade.

Shaded outdoor drying: If you prefer drying outside, choose a shaded area to shield clothes from direct sunlight.

Tumble dry on low heat: If you must use a dryer, opt for a low-heat or air-dry setting to minimize damage.

By giving your clothes a gentler drying process, you’ll maintain their look and feel for much longer.

8. Hand Wash When Possible

For delicate or high-value fabrics, hand washing is a superior alternative to machine washing. While it requires more effort, the benefits far outweigh the inconvenience.

Unlike washing machines, which can be abrasive, hand washing allows for a gentler clean without excessive friction or agitation. This is especially important for delicate fabrics like silk, wool, lace, or cashmere.

Additionally, hand washing gives you control over specific stains, enabling you to treat problem areas with care. A soft-bristled brush or gentle rubbing can often remove stubborn spots more effectively than a machine wash.

To hand wash effectively, use lukewarm or cold water with a small amount of mild detergent. Soak the clothes for 10–15 minutes, gently agitate them, and then rinse thoroughly. Lay the garments flat to dry or hang them in a shaded area to prevent damage.

9. Use Fabric Protectors

Adding fabric protectors to your laundry routine is an easy yet effective way to maintain the vibrancy and longevity of your clothes. Here’s how they work:

Color-catcher sheets: These sheets absorb loose dyes during the wash, preventing color bleeding and transfer between fabrics. They are especially useful for mixed loads or when washing new clothes for the first time.

Specialized detergents: Detergents designed for color protection help prevent fading while still cleaning effectively. Look for products labeled “color-safe” or “color-preserving.”

Fabric softeners and conditioners: These products not only make clothes feel softer but also reduce friction during washing, which can minimize fading and wear.

You don’t need to incorporate all of these products into your laundry routine. However, switching to a more specialized detergent is a small change that offers significant benefits — and it’s not much more expensive than regular detergent.

10. Wash Denim Sparingly

Denim is a staple in many wardrobes, but it’s also one of the most delicate fabrics when it comes to maintaining its original look. Frequent washing can strip its dye and weaken the fibers, leading to fading and loss of shape.

To preserve your jeans, wash them less frequently. Jeans don’t need to be washed after every wear. Instead, air them out or spot-clean small stains to keep them fresh. Washing every 5–10 wears is usually sufficient.

Also, be sure to follow the instructions we already talked about: Always turn your jeans inside-out before washing, use cold water with a gentle detergent, and skip the dryer. Finally, let your jeans air-dry by hanging them by the waistband or draping them over a drying rack to avoid shrinkage and maintain their shape.

11. Limit Washing Frequency

Frequent washing is one of the leading causes of fabric fading and wear. It’s not just jeans — other clothes can benefit from reduced washing too.

Here are some tips on how to minimize washing without sacrificing cleanliness:

Air out clothes: After wearing an outfit, hang it in a well-ventilated area to air out and release odors. This works especially well for lightly worn items like sweaters, jackets, or jeans.

Spot clean: Instead of washing the entire garment, target small stains or spills directly with a damp cloth or gentle detergent.

Refresh with steam: Use a handheld steamer or the steam setting on your iron to freshen up clothes and remove wrinkles between washes.

Use fabric refreshers: Spray a fabric refresher on clothes to neutralize odors and keep them smelling fresh without needing a full wash.

While these solutions can’t completely replace washing, they can significantly reduce the frequency of washes — potentially by two or three times. Plus, you’ll conserve water and save energy in the process!

12. Pre-Treat Stains Gently

When it comes to stain removal, a gentle touch is key to preserving your clothes. Harsh chemical stain removers might work quickly, but they can often damage fabrics and cause fading.

Luckily, there are some gentler DIY alternatives that are effective without harming your garments:

Baking soda paste: Mix baking soda with a small amount of water to form a paste. Apply it to the stain, let it sit for 10–15 minutes, and then rinse thoroughly.

Mild detergent solution: Dilute a small amount of detergent in water, and use a soft cloth or toothbrush to gently work on the stain. Rinse thoroughly afterward.

White vinegar and water: For tougher stains, mix equal parts white vinegar and water, apply to the stained area, and gently blot with a cloth.

Club soda: For wine or soda stains, club soda can help lift the stain. Pour it directly onto the spot and blot gently with a cloth.

Before applying any of these methods to visible areas, always test them on a hidden section of the garment to ensure there’s no discoloration or damage. Once confirmed, you can proceed confidently with the stain removal process.

13. Use a Mesh Bag for Delicates

Delicate fabrics such as lace, silk, and knits require extra care to maintain their integrity and appearance. A mesh laundry bag, like the ones from Muchfun, is an invaluable tool for protecting these items while still ensuring they get clean.

Mesh bags help prevent damage by reducing friction and tangling, which can lead to snags, stretching, or pilling. They also keep small items like socks, lingerie, and bras secure, preventing them from getting lost or damaged in the wash.

Using a mesh bag is simple: just place your delicate garments inside, zip it up, and wash on a gentle cycle with cold water. Avoid overloading the bag to ensure that each item is thoroughly cleaned without being crushed or stretched.

14. Rotate Your Wardrobe

Wearing the same clothing items repeatedly not only leads to more frequent washing but also causes fabrics to wear out faster. Rotating your wardrobe allows your clothes to “rest” between wears, reducing the strain on fibers and helping them last longer.

To make wardrobe rotation work, keep your closet organized and plan your outfits ahead of time. Try to avoid wearing the same pieces on consecutive days, and make an effort to include items you don’t wear as often. Paying attention to your most-used garments and consciously mixing in underused ones helps balance wear across your wardrobe.

This habit not only preserves the lifespan of your clothing but also gives you more variety in your daily wardrobe choices, keeping your style fresh and exciting.

15. Use Salt to Lock in Colors

Salt is a time-tested method for preserving the vibrant colors of new clothes. It helps to set the dyes in the fabric, which minimizes the risk of color bleeding and fading during the wash.

For new clothes, add about one tablespoon of salt to the wash water. For bold or dark colors, soak the garment in a mixture of cold water and salt (about 1 tablespoon per gallon of water) for 30 minutes before washing. This pre-soak method further reduces the chance of colors running.

Final Thoughts

Caring for your clothes doesn’t have to be time-consuming or expensive. By incorporating these tips into your laundry routine, you’ll not only prevent fading but also extend the life of your wardrobe and reduce environmental impact.

Whether it’s turning clothes inside-out, using vinegar, or hand washing, small changes can make a big difference in preserving the quality of your clothes. Try these strategies and see the results for yourself!

It’s important to have a freshly ironed set of clothes, whether you’re heading off to work or meeting someone new. An ironed-out suit or a neatly pressed shirt will let the other person know you’re professional, clean, and presentable. And with the right iron, you can get the job done in no time flat.

However, sometimes you might not have access to an iron, so getting rid of those wrinkles will be difficult. In this article, you’ll learn how to manage to keep the clothes nice and wrinkle-free using a hair straightener. In fact, you’ll learn several other key methods of keeping the clothes in pristine condition in case an iron is just outside of your reach.

Simple Steps to Iron Clothes Using a Hair Straightener

Hair straighteners come in various shapes and sizes. And depending on which one you have, they will produce a different effect on your clothes. Some of the options include:

Ceramic flat irons

Ionic flat irons

Tourmaline flat irons

Titanium flat irons

Wet and dry straighteners

Broadly speaking, though, they all basically work using the same principle. Namely, you place your hair between the two hot, flat surfaces of the straightener, and you slowly pull the whole device downward. In other words, it goes from the root to the ends of your hair. The heat is what makes the hair follicles softer, i.e., easier to shape, or in this case, straighten.

Incidentally, some of the straighteners have wide plates, while others are thin. Keep this information in mind, since both types can come in handy when dealing with clothes.

Now, how can you apply this principle when it comes to ironing your threads? Here’s a simple guide to help you along.

1. Locating the Ironing Area

In order to iron clothes properly, even with a hair straightener, you will need a nice, wide, flat surface area to put your clothes on. Most people opt for using an ironing board. After all, you can buy them at a reasonable price in most online retail chains, or even at your local store.

Of course, you don’t really need anything more than a flat space to put your shirts or trousers on, so any old table or countertop will do. However, make sure that the surface isn’t flammable. In other words, don’t go through this process on a wooden table; the straightener may not cause a fire just from ironing, but if you leave it on improperly, it will leave burn marks on the surface of the table.

2. Pre-Cleaning the Plates

Before you do anything with the flat iron, make sure that it’s clean. If there are any specks of dust or grime on it, it may cause combustion. Furthermore, it can also leave nasty traces on your clean clothes that will be difficult to remove later.

Since hair straighteners operate similarly to clothing irons, you can use iron cleaning liquid to get them in the perfect shape. Otherwise, you may opt for regular straightener-appropriate cleaning products, depending on the hot plate material.

3. Heating the Flat Iron

This part of the process is actually quite crucial. After all, hair straighteners come with several different temperature settings, and not all of them will be appropriate for a particular type of clothing.

The basic rule of thumb when it comes to the right temperature is simple enough. If you’re ironing soft fabrics, such as silk or cotton, use a medium setting. On the other hand, if you’re dealing with something as thick and hard as denim, you’ll want to turn up the heat.

4. The Actual Ironing Process

As you would do with hair, you’ll need to place the fabric between the two hot flat surfaces of the straightener. We recommend doing the front side of the clothing item first, and then the back. Leave the sides and the corners last.

Start off by slowly and gently pressing the flat iron against the clothing. Then proceed with small and slow wiggles. The process may stretch the fabric, but not too much. In fact, it will stretch roughly the same amount as a regular iron would.

As stated earlier, you’ll want both wide and thin plate straighteners. Use the wide ones for big sections of clothing, such as the area that covers your chest and stomach or your back. When it comes to wrinkles in tight areas, i.e,. between shirt buttons or near the collar, it’s best to use a thin iron.

With some wrinkles, you may need a bit of moisture. We recommend dabbing the section you want to wrinkle with some water and then going at it with the iron. This process will create some steam, giving the clothing a proper straightening.

5. Hanging the Clothes

As soon as you’re done ironing the clothes, hang them somewhere for a while. This will keep them wrinkle-free until you actually have to wear them. But there’s an additional purpose to this step. Namely, by hanging them, you’ll allow all of the heat from the flat iron to dissipate properly without any damage.

Once you’re done with ironing, make sure to clean the straightener when it cools down. Use a damp cloth and an iron cleaner to remove any potential stains or hair burn marks.

Additional Uses for a Hair Straightener

Aside from ironing clothes, your hair straightener can help you around the house in several important ways. Some of the most creative uses include:

Sealing food packets for extra freshness

Melting butter for certain meals

Pasting fabric stickers on clothes

Drying wet currency

Other DIY Methods of Ironing Clothes

Not having an iron around the house can be quite an issue, especially since you can use it for more than just ironing clothes. But don’t fret, since there are other methods that will keep those wrinkles away from your outfits.

Firstly, try to use a mixture of white vinegar and water. Spray the wrinkled part of your clothes and then hang them out to dry overnight. If that doesn’t work, hang them in your bathroom while you shower. The steam ought to get the wrinkles out quickly.

Next, you can try rolling your shirts and placing them under a mattress for an hour. Alternatively, moisten a clean towel and lightly pat the wrinkled area with it. Of course, if you happen to own a hot pot, you can try filling it with hot water and pressing it onto your clothes, like a little makeshift iron.

If all else fails, you can always use a hair dryer to straighten your wrinkled outfits. It will take a bit of time, but it’ll ultimately get the job done.

Ironing With a Hair Straightener Summed Up

Obviously, if you can get your hands on a proper clothing iron, we recommend doing so. But it’s always good to have an alternative solution when it comes to ironing clothes. And if you need one that’s effective 99% of the time, then hair straighteners are the way to go.

A clothes steamer is a perfect device for you if you hate ironing but love the appearance and feel of crisp clothing. It can make you look sophisticated and perfectly pressed more quickly and efficiently than a typical iron, but only if you take care of it properly.

Distilled water is an essential component for the longevity of your appliance. Even though you can put regular tap water in the steamer, doing so makes cleaning it more difficult and may reduce its lifespan. Read on to find out why using distilled water in your steamer is the best option and what to do if you run out of it.

What Is Distilled Water?

It is regular water that has undergone the distillation process, which includes boiling the water and then condensing a vapor into liquid form. After removing all the impurities and contaminants, only water in its purest form remains.

Experts recommend using only distilled water in steamers to eliminate wrinkles or sanitize materials like curtains, upholstery, or clothes. That is because standard water usually contains minerals that corrode your steamer’s metal parts over time. In other words, tap water leads to corrosion which will eventually wear out and break down your appliance.

What Other Kinds of Water Can You Pour Into a Steamer?

You can find various types of water on the market, which might be confusing. Between purified, demineralized, deionized, bottled, distilled, tap, and spring water, which kind is safe enough for your appliance and garments?

As mentioned, distilled water is the purest form out there. On the other hand, purified water has only been filtered to remove contaminants. Although either type will work well in your steamer, the former is a preferable option.

As you may know, distillation is just one of a few methods used to purify water. Other kinds include deionization and reverse osmosis. They both result in purified water that has a higher level of “purity” than filtered, tap, bottled, or spring water.

What If You Run Out of Distilled Water?

Distilled water is still better for your steamer than any other. But in case you do not have it at hand, the next best choice is demineralized, purified, or deionized water.

If you don’t have access to those either, it would be best to pour bottled or spring water into your appliance, followed by tap water. Any water found outside, including rain and well water, is not recommended but can be used in emergencies.

What Will Happen If You Don’t Use Distilled Water for Your Steamer?

People commonly put bottled, filtered, and tap water into their garment steamers. Most often, it is tap because it is always available and free. Although that does sound appealing, each of these three options will harm your appliance over time, leading to issues like carbon, lime scale, and white silt buildup.

And to make matters worse, this could also end up staining your expensive clothing. Nevertheless, if you don’t have access to distilled water and you intend to use tap water continually, at least make sure to clean your steamer regularly. That includes a thorough cleansing of the exterior of the nozzle and the inside of the device.

Is It Possible to Make Distilled Water at Home?

You can make distilled water at home — but it might not be worth the hassle. That is because you can carry out the distillation process either by using electricity or burning fuel to boil the water. Considering the current electricity and gas prices in the US, it is actually cheaper to buy bottled distilled water.

That said, if you still wish for a DIY project, you can consult this YT video. The process itself is not complicated — all you need is a stove and ice. However, it does take up a lot of time and electricity (fuel).

Another more efficient way to make distilled water at home is with water distillers like this one. These appliances don’t require lots of electricity and can make a quarter of a gallon an hour. Nonetheless, buying bottled distilled water in local supermarkets is still the cheapest option because a gallon costs about $1.

Final Thoughts

As far as clothes steamers go, distilled water is the best option. Other types of water contain minerals that can corrode its metal parts, shortening its life span and potentially ruining your clothes.

In recent years, steam cleaners have gained significant popularity. Available in various shapes and sizes, they are commonly used to clean different surfaces, including clothing. For many, steamers have proven to be an excellent and cost-effective alternative to dry cleaning, which has become increasingly expensive.

But can steamers truly clean clothes? Are they as effective as regular washing or dry cleaning when it comes to removing stains and sanitizing garments? Read on as we explore everything you need to know about steaming your clothes.

How Steam Cleaners Work

Before we get into the specifics of steam cleaning, let’s discuss how steamers work in the first place. As their name suggests, they are powered by water (usually distilled water) which is turned into steam via pressure and heat. Each steamer has a front opening through which the steam is released.

When you apply the steam to different surfaces, its pressure can clean and purify them. In addition, it can help remove wrinkles and make the fabric appear tidier overall.

But Can Steamers Clean Clothes?

Yes, without a doubt. A steam cleaner can indeed clean clothes. This fact is especially true for garments that you cannot wash often (or at all), such as clothing made of linen or silk. It is also suitable for all pieces of clothing that you would usually take to a dry cleaner.

Steam cleaning can help remove tough stains, bacteria, and allergens from clothes. In addition, it makes them look fresh and wrinkle-free, even if you’ve never actually washed them with water.

What Steaming Does to Your Clothes

Since the process uses heat, pressure, and steam, you can compare steaming clothes to ironing them. However, there are a few key differences.

For one, the steam coming out of an iron isn’t as powerful as that of a steamer. As a result, irons cannot clean clothes, while steamers can indeed remove bacteria and even foul odors.

Moreover, steamers cannot easily burn clothes or cause any similar damage, as they are never actually in direct contact with the clothes. The same cannot be said for irons, which are notorious for leaving all types of burn marks on garments.

Finally, steamers are indeed suitable for all materials, no matter how delicate they might be. On the other hand, you can only use irons on sturdier materials that can sustain direct contact with heat.

Steaming Clothes to Remove Stains

Steaming your clothes can definitely help remove stains. The heat from the steam helps loosen the fibers in the material, which automatically makes it easier to remove most everyday stains from clothes.

However, there is a catch. Namely, steam cleaners can only remove stains that are at least relatively new. In other words, if you’ve left a stain to sit for a few days, you’ll most likely need something stronger to get it out completely. But if the stain is new, the steamer will do more than nicely.

To remove a stain, simply hold the head of the steamer close to the affected area for a few seconds. How long you will need to hold it depends on the type of stain and the material you are working with. Typically, about 20 to 30 seconds should do the trick.

In case the stain you want to remove is on wool or silk, you will have to be extra careful. These materials cannot sustain high heat for too long. Thus, you will have to steam them over a longer period and take frequent breaks so you don’t cause any additional damage.

Removing Odors From Clothing

As we’ve already briefly mentioned above, steamers can also get rid of odors from clothing. The process is similar to that of removing stains, as the loosening of the fibers in the material helps release any lingering smells.

Furthermore, a lot of odors are actually emitted by bacteria and other types of microorganisms that cling to clothes. Thus, steamers can also make your clothes smell better by eliminating these germs with the help of heat and pressure.

So, if your clothing is clean but has an unpleasant smell you’d like to get rid of, using a steamer is the way to go. You’ll easily freshen up garments and postpone your visit to a dry cleaning service, while saving some money in the process.

Sanitizing

Steam can help kill off germs and allergens that accumulate on clothing. In fact, some steam cleaners are so powerful that they can eliminate listeria, E. coli, and even salmonella from different surfaces.

Thus, even if your clothes are clean, it cannot hurt to go over them with your garment steam cleaner. By doing so, you will remove any potential microorganisms still lingering on the fabric and ensure that the clothes you wear are truly safe for you.

Another Benefit of Steaming Your Clothes

While it is true that no piece of clothing can last forever, there are certain processes that can help extend the shelf life of most materials. You’ve guessed it — steaming is one such process.

Using your washer and dryer can often prove to be far too harsh, especially for delicate fabrics. The same goes for taking your clothes to the dry cleaner. Namely, most companies use harsh chemicals to replace water, which can lead to damage with regular cleanings.

So, to make sure that your clothes last longer and don’t shrink, try to substitute washing or dry cleaning with steaming as much as possible. It is yet another way to save money and preserve the clothing you love at the same time.

What Materials Are Suitable for Steam Cleaning?

Like we mentioned before, steaming is suitable for most materials. However, it works best for delicate fabrics such as wool, silk, linen, cotton, and most synthetic materials.

Aside from cleaning these fabrics, you can also use steamers to remove any wrinkles. In fact, you can eliminate the need for an iron almost completely by getting a small garment steamer.

The only clothing items you still might want to iron are dress shirts and slacks, simply because steamers usually cannot give you that crisp smoothness such formal attire requires. But if you don’t wear these types of clothes on a regular basis, a steamer will satisfy all your ironing needs.

Can Steam Damage Clothing?

It goes without saying that heat and pressure can damage certain materials. However, most clothes steamers do not exceed 150-200°F at their highest setting, which is considered safe for the majority of regular fabrics. For comparison, most dryers heat up to around 150°F.

Still, you should be especially careful with wool and silk, as gentle materials are usually more heat sensitive. When steaming them, try to do it over long stretches of time, letting the fabric cool down in between sessions. That way, it won’t overheat and suffer any damage.

And finally, try not to hold the steamer too close to the material you are cleaning. Keeping a distance of an inch or two can make all the difference and ensure that your clothes last a long time.

Final Thoughts

All in all, it is definitely possible to clean clothes using a steamer. The combination of heat and high pressure can remove stains, bacteria, and odors alike, leaving your clothes in pristine condition after. Steaming is an excellent solution for garments that cannot sustain regular washing or need to be dry cleaned.

As with all gadgets that use heat, you should be careful not to damage or burn your clothes when steaming them. That is especially true for wool, silk, and cashmere, as they are incredibly gentle and soft. Handle such materials with special care, and you will be able to steam them seamlessly anytime you want.

Despite sunscreen’s protective properties, the stains it leaves on your clothes can be a nuisance. The stains look oily and rusty, and they can be stubborn to remove. However, getting the sunscreen out of your clothes doesn’t have to be a painful ordeal if you have a healthy dose of patience and the right products.

You can get sunscreen out of clothes by removing the excess sunscreen and then pretreating it with a DIY or chemical stain remover. The stain will break down as you scrub it with a brush or soft cloth. You should then wash the clothes with warm water and heavy-duty detergent.

The rest of this article will discuss why sunscreen stains clothes and expand on the steps above.

1. Remove Excess Sunscreen From Clothing

Before you pretreat and wash your stained clothing, it’s essential to remove the excess sunscreen first. If you begin the pretreatment process without wiping off the excess product, the chemicals you use later may not break down the stain completely. Let’s go through what you should do below:

Scrub off any leftover product with a spoon, knife, soft brush, or cloth.

Ensure that you scrub towards the center of the stain rather than outward, as you may spread the product more and make the stain bigger.

I recommend using The Laundress Stain Brush from Amazon, as it’s specifically made for fabrics. It’s a gentle brush that will protect the quality of your clothes and is ideal for the entire pretreatment process. You can use a spoon or cloth to scrape off the excess — however, they may make a bigger mess of the stain.

2. Pretreat the Stain With a Natural or Chemical Stain Remover

Pretreating the stained area before you put it in the washing machine increases the chances of the stain being completely removed, as the pretreatment spot treats the stain and will break down the oils.

While it’s often suggested to only use a chemical stain remover, using a natural or DIY one can work just as well. There are several natural stain removers that you’ll probably find in your home, so let’s explore a few of them below.

Baking soda: Baking soda has gained popularity as one of the best and most affordable cleaning solutions. Use it as a pretreatment by sprinkling some on the stained area. Make sure to coat the surface of the stain with it.

Cornflour: Cornflour is a good substitute for baking soda and will absorb the oil from the sunscreen stain. You can add it dry to the stain or make a paste with water and leave it on the stain overnight.

White vinegar: Homemakers have lauded white vinegar for decades for its cleaning power and ability to penetrate through oil stains. It’s incredibly safe to use on fabrics and will make your clothes smell fresh.

Lemon juice: Lemon juice is a bleaching agent because it contains acetic acid. However, be careful when using it on colored clothing as it may discolor the clothes if left for too long. It’s recommended to only use lemon juice on white clothing.

Eucalyptus oil: This oil isn’t just known for its incredible aroma but also for its ability to remove oil stains from clothing. Apply a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil to the stained area for a few minutes before washing.

When using one of the above natural stain removers, ensure that you let them sit on the stained area for 10-15 minutes.

If you’d rather use a chemical stain remover, make sure you use one you trust to retain the quality of your clothing. Some trusted brands include OxiClean, Tide, and Persil. Also, make sure that you don’t use too much stain remover. It might make it harder to rinse out and can damage your clothes.

It’s also possible to use both a natural and a chemical stain remover. Here’s a YouTube video showing you how to do this:

3. Rub the Natural or Chemical Stain Remover Into the Clothing

Once you’ve added your chosen stain remover, let it sit on the stained area for 10-15 minutes before gently rubbing the stain remover into the stain with a spoon, soft brush, or cloth. This spreads the stain remover into the clothing fibers and loosens the stain before you’ve even thrown your clothes into the washing machine.

And if you use a brush like the one we recommended above, you might even find that the stain has already faded a little.

4. Use Bleach for White Clothes

Sunscreen stains on white clothes will undoubtedly be more noticeable. You can use chemical bleach on the stained area. However, make sure that you use a small amount of bleach and dilute it with water, as bleach can be harsh and damage your clothing.

After washing, if you find that the bleach hasn’t worked to eradicate the stain, you can add lemon juice to the stain before drying the clothes in the sun.

5. Wash Your Clothing in Warm Water and Heavy-Duty Detergent

Once you’ve let the stain remover sit for 10-15 minutes and gently rub it into the stain, you can now wash your clothes on the normal cycle. It’s okay to chuck it into the washer with other clothes.

A heavy-duty detergent will do a better job at removing sunscreen. Wash the clothes in warm water — using too hot water may set the oily stain further into the clothes, and you also risk damaging the fabric.

Additionally, you can check the fabric’s care label to be more precise with the temperature at which you should wash your clothes.

6. Dry Your Clothes in the Sun

If you notice the stain is still present after washing, try to tackle it immediately by adding a little more stain remover and throwing it into the washer again. Don’t make the mistake of drying the clothing first, as heat can permanently set the stain.

Similarly, it’s better to avoid tumble drying as the high heat will cause any trace of the stain to become permanent. Your safest option would be to sun dry your clothing.

The sun naturally bleaches clothing without causing damage and kills bacteria too.

Why Sunscreen Stain Clothes

Sunscreen stains clothes because it contains oil-based ingredients and avobenzone. Oil stains are harder to break down, and when avobenzone mixes with hard water, a rusty, yellow-like stain will appear on your clothing. The type of clothing fibers determines the severity of the stain.

Natural and cotton fibers are more absorbent than synthetic fibers, and the more absorbent a fabric is, the easier it is to remove stains. Keep this in mind the next time you wear sunscreen under synthetic clothing.

The combination of oil ingredients and avobenzone makes sunscreen stains a pain to remove. However, with the steps described above, you should be able to do it without much effort.

Final Thoughts

I hope this post gave you some valuable tips for getting sunscreen out of your clothes.

As annoying as sunscreen stains are, don’t compromise your skincare just to avoid stains on your clothes. With these above steps, you’ll be able to remove the sunscreen stains without breaking too much of a sweat.

Here are a few reminders:

Always pretreat the stain before washing the clothes

Try using a combination of natural and chemical stain remover, but don’t overdo it

Avoid using a tumble dryer and sun dry your clothes

Life is full of surprises, and sometimes that means dealing with unexpected messes. Ink stains, in particular, can be challenging to clean.

So you might be wondering if there are effective ways to tackle these tough stains using products you already have at home.

Fortunately, there are! In this article, I’ll share 13 highly effective home remedies for removing ink stains from clothes, so you can confidently save your favorite outfits with ease.

1. Apply Toothpaste to the Affected Area

Toothpaste is a classic home remedy for removing tough dye and pigment-based stains.

This is because it’s often made with baking soda and other abrasive ingredients that are used to remove stains in your teeth. For this reason, most toothpaste is also effective in removing ink from most fabrics.

To remove ink stains from your clothing using this method, you should apply a generous amount of toothpaste onto the affected area and gently rub the site with your finger or an unused toothbrush until the stain disappears.

2. Use an Alcohol-Based Hairspray

Hairspray is another standard method for ink stain removal. However, not every hairspray does the trick.

This method has been proven effective because most hair sprays contain alcohol, which helps break down stains. Just make sure that you use alcohol-based hairspray only for this technique. It’s also important to remember that hairsprays containing high amounts of oil might worsen the stain.

For this method, you should spray the affected area with a generous amount of hairspray and let it soak for a minute or two before softly scrubbing out the stain with a wet rag.

3. Use Rubbing Alcohol

Another excellent technique for removing ink stains is to use rubbing alcohol. It’s really efficient for removing stains, especially ink-based ones. This is because rubbing alcohol is a solvent, which means that it’ll actually dissolve the stain.

For minor stains, use a dropper or teaspoon to pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol directly onto the ink stain. More prominent stains can be soaked for a few minutes for maximum efficiency. Eventually, the alcohol should dissolve the pigment and leave your clothes looking fresh. However, you might have to support this method with a bit of scrubbing.

If you’re looking for safe rubbing alcohol to use for ink stain removal, I recommend this 91% Pure Isopropyl Alcohol (Amazon). This option is ideal because it’s diluted with water to ensure that it isn’t too harsh on your fabrics. Additionally, it’s also affordable and premium grade.

4. Give Your Clothes a Milk Bath

Believe it or not, milk can be an easy solution to your ink stain problem.

Using milk is an excellent way to remove ink stains. It’s also very accessible and affordable, and chances are that you probably already have a gallon or two of milk lying around in your fridge.

Giving your stained garment an overnight milk bath is a great way to rid your clothing of any ink. You should still run the affected piece of clothing through the wash afterward to remove the milk and any remaining ink blotches. I’ll talk about some of my favorite all-natural stain-removing laundry detergents later on in this article.

5. Dissolve the Stain With White Vinegar

Using white vinegar is another excellent way to say goodbye to those pesky ink stains.

You can either add a generous amount of the substance to your wash cycle or let the affected piece of clothing soak in white vinegar overnight. An overnight soak will be the most effective solution, but you can also try soaking it for four to five hours if you’re pressed for time.

After soaking your clothes in vinegar, you might have to do a bit of scrubbing to rid the fabric of whatever ink remains. However, some people have found that the soak will remove the ink entirely. Either way, you should still run the clothes in the wash after being soaked to remove the vinegar from the textile.

In addition to being highly effective, white vinegar is also very budget-friendly and widely available at most grocery and home supply stores.

6. Use Baking Soda

Baking soda is your best friend when it comes to home remedies. It has so many different functions that can be utilized to keep your home naturally clean. It works wonders for removing odors, mold, mildew, and of course– ink stains.

Baking soda is another highly-affordable home remedy, and you probably already have some lying around your house. It’s one of the most effective methods on this list because it creates a strong chemical reaction that breaks down the stain.

There are quite a few ways to remove ink stains from your clothes using baking soda. The first one is to make a paste using baking soda and water. You can then follow the steps for the toothpaste technique to scrub out the ink with a cotton ball, damp cloth, or toothbrush.

You can also try soaking the clothing in a baking soda and water mixture, but this will take more time and will probably still need to be scrubbed and thrown in the wash afterward.

7. Rub the Stain With Hand Sanitizer

Hand sanitizer is another surprisingly effective technique for ink stain removal.

Many hand sanitizers contain alcohol, which works wonders with challenging stains. For this method, you can use either gel or spray hand sanitizer. You should just make sure that it is fragrance-free and doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals or greasy oils that can worsen the stain.

After double-checking whether your hand sanitizer contains alcohol, you can apply it directly to the ink stain and wait for the reaction to occur. The stain will begin to dissolve after a few minutes of soaking. Afterward, you can scrub out the remnants and rinse out the hand sanitizer with water. You can also throw the clothing in the washing machine to remove any residue.

8. Scrub the Stain’s Surface With Sandpaper

Sandpaper is an excellent tool for removing ink stains. This approach works best for situations where the ink has already dried.

The idea is that you scrub the surface with sandpaper (fine grain, not coarse) to rub off the majority of the ink. After you’ve buffed the surface, you can use a toothbrush, rag, or dish brush to rub it with vinegar and thoroughly remove the stain.

9. Use Lemon Oil

Lemon oil is another surprisingly effective method for getting rid of ink-based stains.

For this particular trick, all you have to do is apply the oil to the stain and scrub it out. You should start to see the oil dissolve the dye. Afterward, you can work it out using the scrubbing tools I’ve covered above.

10. Scrub the Fabric With Baby Wipes

Baby wipes are another product known for their multifunctionality, but few know that they are surprisingly good at removing stubborn stains from all kinds of surfaces.

Baby wipes are an excellent choice for removing ink stains on the go. They’re also really easy to use and don’t require much effort on your part. To utilize this method, simply scrub the affected area with a baby wipe until the stain has been removed.

11. Use Makeup Remover Wipes

Makeup remover wipes work similarly to baby wipes. However, they might be more effective because they’re designed to clean things like mascara and liquid eyeliner, which are very similar to ink stains.

You can use a makeup wipe at home or on the go to remove an ink stain from your clothing. This method is as easy as the baby wipe method; it just requires a different kind of wipe.

I recommend using these Honest Beauty Makeup Remover Wipes (Amazon) for stain removal, they’re not only my personal favorite but highly reviewed as well. They’re non-toxic, free of synthetic fragrances, and can work wonders on any pigment-based stain. I’ve used these to remove ink stains myself.

12. Use a Mixture of Cornstarch and Milk

The cornstarch and milk method is another tried and true technique for getting rid of ink stains. Surprisingly, it works really well for dry ink.

This technique is simple, but it does take a bit of time out of your day. First, you should create a paste using cornstarch and a small amount of milk. Like the toothpaste method, you should rub a generous amount of the substance onto the affected area. However, you need to let it dry for a few hours instead of scrubbing it away immediately.

After it has dried, you can scrub away the mess and run the garment through the wash to clean out any remaining ink, milk, or cornstarch.

13. Apply Butter to the Ink Stain

Butter is probably the most shocking out of all the remedies I’ve discussed so far. However, some people claim that it works really well for ink stain removal, especially when the ink has already dried and is set into the clothing. It’s effective because the oil and salt work together to remove the stain.

To implement this method into your laundry routine, all you have to do is grab a stick of butter from the fridge and rub it straight onto the fabric like glue. Afterward, you can scrub it out with a brush or rag. You also want to run the clothing in the wash afterward to eliminate the greasy residue that butter can leave.

Test Which Remedy Works for You

The reason why stains are so tricky pretty much boils down to chemistry. Different pigments are composed of different chemical makeups, which means that removing stains is often heavily reliant on trial and error.

When attempting to remove ink stains, some methods may work better than others because many inks, dyes, and other pigments are composed of different ingredients that vary from product to product. For this reason, some inks will react differently depending on the stain removal method you choose.

When testing out these home remedies, here are some tips you should consider:

Use what you already have at home. You never know which methods will have the most effective chemical reaction because it depends on variables that are often unknown, such as the ingredients of the particular ink, the makeup of your fabric, and the reaction the method will cause. Your best bet is to start with what you have and narrow it down from there.

Try different methods if one doesn’t seem to be working. If you only tried one of the previous techniques and discovered that it didn’t work, don’t fret. This doesn’t mean that you have to give up on your efforts. Just try a few of the other approaches and see what reacts best with your particular fabric and stain.

Ink is trickier to remove once it dries, so try to remove it while it’s still wet. Ink is a lot more challenging to remove from your clothes when dry. This is why it’s essential to try and attack the stain as soon as possible to ensure maximum efficiency. However, it’s not the end of the world if the ink does dry – as you’ve read several methods that can work wonders on this situation.

If I had to choose one solution, it would probably be rubbing alcohol because it is a solvent. This means that the alcohol chemically reacts with tough stains and works to dissolve them. It’s one of the most effective ways to tackle ink stains at home without using harsh detergents or toxic stain-removing sprays.

Every circumstance is different, and certain methods might work better than others, depending on the variables of your situation. However, generally speaking, rubbing alcohol is your most reliable bet for ink stains and can be a lifesaver when it comes to saving your favorite clothes.

Bonus: Top Natural Laundry Detergents for Ink Stains

All of the listed methods that I suggested have been tried and tested for years. However, sometimes a machine wash can also be an effective solution for removing ink stains from clothing. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to resort to buying toxin-heavy detergents to get rid of stains.

After you’ve tried as many home remedies as you can, you may want to consider running your stained laundry through the washing machine. Fortunately, the approaches I suggested may facilitate the stain’s removal and make it easier for the detergent to do its job. Try to remove as much of the ink as possible before throwing it in the wash.

Here are some of the best laundry detergents for getting rid of ink stains:

Seventh Generation Concentrated Laundry Detergent

Biokleen Free & Clear Laundry Detergent

9 Elements Liquid Laundry Detergent

Seventh Generation Concentrated Laundry Detergent

This detergent is one of my favorites because it’s much more natural than other options on the market. The Seventh Generation Concentrated Laundry Detergent uses plant-powered and triple-enzyme technology to tackle stains and effectively break them down.

I love this detergent because it’s free of harsh synthetic fragrances. It’s also hypoallergenic, meaning that it’s designed to be suitable for sensitive skin. However, its gentleness doesn’t take away from its concentration, which means that you’re paying less money for a longer use cycle.

Biokleen Free & Clear Laundry Detergent

The Biokleen Free & Clear Laundry Detergent is another one of my all-time favorites. This product is free of harsh chemicals and extremely effective at the same time.

Biokleen uses plant-derived ingredients to rid your clothes of unwanted stains and odors. This one is also fragrance-free and doesn’t contain hazardous toxins that many other detergents do. In addition to being free of unwanted chemicals, it’s also highly concentrated and supports up to 300 loads of laundry.

9 Elements Liquid Laundry Detergent

Another excellent choice for all-natural laundry detergent is the 9 Elements Liquid Laundry Detergent. I personally love this detergent because it only uses 9 disclosed and plant-based ingredients to boost your laundry and stain-elimination routine.

This detergent runs on the power of natural vinegar to react with your stains and break them down. It’s also free of synthetic fragrance and is scented with 100% pure eucalyptus essential oil to freshen up your favorite fabrics. Eucalyptus smells great, but it’s also highly effective when it comes to stain removal.

Chewing gum is a delightful treat enjoyed by both kids and adults alike. Unfortunately, it can become a real headache when it sticks to your favorite clothes, leaving you questioning whether getting it out is even possible.

The good news? It absolutely is! With several clever hacks at your disposal, removing gum from clothing can be much simpler than you think. In this article, we’ll share 16 DIY methods to help you effectively get rid of gum and restore your garments.

1. Apply Toothpaste on the Gum

Take a small amount of toothpaste and apply it to the gum stuck to your garment. The amount you use should be sufficient to cover the surface of the cloth. Spread the toothpaste over the gum and leave the toothpaste to dry. Once the toothpaste dries, the gum will become hard, and you can peel it off with your fingers.

If you don’t want to wait for the toothpaste to dry, there’s another technique you can try with toothpaste. Apply toothpaste on the gum and keep rubbing it until the gum starts breaking up into multiple pieces.

You can remove the remnants with your hand or use a toothbrush for it. To completely clean the garment, rinse it under cold water and put it in the washing machine with a high water temperature.

Ensure that you don’t use whitening toothpaste as it contains bleach and can cause your colored garments to lose their color. Toothpaste can stain your clothes.

If you’re using this technique, be careful not to rub the toothpaste on the fabric accidentally. If you accidentally get the toothpaste on the cloth, throw the fabric in the washing machine and use a stain-removing detergent.

2. Put Ice Cubes on It

Take a handful of ice cubes, put a few into two plastic bags, and seal the bags. Place one bag of cubes on top of the gum and the other bag on the other side of the garment. Don’t put the ice cubes directly on the gum as the gum might get stuck to the ice, and it will be messy.

Applying a pack of ice on both sides of the fabric will cause the gum to harden and turn stiff. You can then scrape it off and use a toothbrush to remove the remnants. Throw the garment into a washing machine to altogether remove the remnants.

Skipping this process and putting the clothes directly into the washing machine won’t remove the gum because water and detergent alone are not enough to remove the material. It is because chewing gums are made of insoluble base that won’t dissolve readily in water.

In addition, putting the clothes with gum directly into your washing machine may destroy the appliance. The gum may get stuck in the machine, causing a bigger problem. That is why it is important to remove the gum before washing.

3. Use an Iron

Grab a piece of cardboard and lay it on top of your ironing board. Place your garment on the cardboard with the chewing gum side down. Start ironing the cloth on medium heat. Use the iron only on the area of the fabric where the gum is stuck.

Using heat will cause the gum to turn very soft, and you can easily peel it away. After peeling off the gum, wash your garment in the washing machine like you usually do.

There’s another ironing technique you can use. Spray some water on the gum and then place a folded medium-thick piece of tissue paper on top of it. Iron the tissue paper on medium heat for a few minutes. When you lift the piece of paper, the gum will most likely stick on it.

4. Use Rubbing Alcohol

Using rubbing alcohol is one of the fastest ways to remove gum from your clothes. A stylist on the Rachael Ray Show came up with this technique. All you need is a q-tip, duct tape, and some rubbing alcohol. See it in action here:

Prepare some rubbing alcohol and dip a q-tip in it. Dab the wet q-tip on the chewing gum. Keep dabbing it all over the surface of the gum and let it dry for thirty seconds.

While you won’t see any difference in the texture, you must immediately paste duct tape on the gum after thirty seconds and rip it off.

Remember not to rip off the duct tape slowly. Peel the duct tape off in one swift motion, similar to how you would do it if you were peeling off waxing strips. The gum should come off with the duct tape easily in one go.

5. Keep Your Clothing in the Freezer

Freezing your clothing will help the gum lose its stickiness. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how you can do that:

Place your piece of clothing into a plastic bag and seal it. Make sure the gum doesn’t stick to the plastic bag.

Let it freeze for about two hours.

After two hours, remove your clothing from the plastic bag.

Use a butter knife to scrape around the edges of the gum to remove it.

Be sure to act fast after removing the cloth from the freezer. If you let the cloth rest and it comes back to room temperature, this technique won’t work. Removing the gum when it’s cold will help you peel it off with ease because the gum won’t be sticky anymore.

6. Apply Peanut Butter on the Gum

While peanut butter is a healthy snack, it is also handy to remove gum from your clothing. Lather the gum on your cloth generously with peanut butter. Leave the peanut butter on the gum for about a minute. The oil from the peanut butter will cause the gum to lose its stickiness. After a minute, you can scrape off the gum with a butter knife.

However, with this technique, you risk staining your clothes. Peanut butter is oily and can leave behind an oil stain. While removing peanut butter stains from your cloth is relatively easy, try avoiding this method if you have a white or light-colored fabric.

If you use this method, you should immediately wash your cloth in the washing machine with a stain-removing detergent.

7. Soak the Cloth in Lemon Juice

Dip the part of your clothing with gum stuck on it into some lemon juice. Keep checking your clothing to see whether the gum has loosened and can come off. You can use your fingers to touch the gum and feel whether it has loosened.

You can also try scraping it off with a butter knife. A butter knife has a blunt edge and won’t tear through your clothes.

With this technique, you run the risk of staining your cloth. Lemon juice can act like bleach and make your clothes lose their color. Therefore, you mustn’t keep your cloth in lemon juice for too long. Keep monitoring the fabric constantly to see if it is losing color.

After removing the gum, wash the garment immediately to avoid stains.

8. Use Hairspray

While a hairspray helps you manage bad hair days, it is a great product to get rid of chewing gum. This technique will only work if your hairspray has alcohol. The alcohol content hardens the gum, making it easier to remove.

Certain hair sprays also have essential oils in them for fragrance. An oil-based hairspray might leave a stain on your garment. Check the contents on your bottle’s label.

When spraying, make sure you aim at the gum. Avoid getting any liquid onto the fabric. After spraying, let it dry. You can scrape off the gum once it is hard. You may need to wash your cloth to eliminate any leftover gum pieces.

If you accidentally get some hairspray onto your cloth, it might leave a waxy stain. If that happens, be sure to act fast and use a stain-removing detergent when washing your clothes in the washing machine.

9. Soak the Cloth in Boiling Water

Boil some water in a pot on your stove on the highest setting. The water should be boiling for this technique to work. Then, submerge the part of your cloth with the gum stuck on it into the boiling water. While the fabric is in hot water, try removing the gum with a butter knife or toothbrush.

Once the gum comes off, you can keep scrubbing the cloth in hot water to remove any remnants. It would be best to be extremely careful with this method since it can be tricky to scrape off the gum in boiling water. To avoid any burn injuries, be cautious and alert.

If you are using this technique, you will want to be careful as boiling water can cause garments to lose color. If you are working with a dark-colored garment, avoid using this method. This method works best with light-colored garments.

10. Use Vinegar

Heat one or two tablespoons of vinegar in the microwave. Apply the vinegar to the gum using a toothbrush. Keep rubbing the vinegar on the gum until it softens and you can pull it off. You need to be careful with this method as it can also cause your fabric to lose color.

To check whether your fabric will lose color, you can follow these steps:

Apply a small amount of vinegar using a q-tip on the inner side of the fabric in a small area.

Let it rest for two minutes or so.

Use a paper towel and dab on the spot. If no color comes off, you can safely use vinegar to remove gum.

11. Use Petroleum Jelly

Using petroleum jelly is a good technique if the gum has dried out or you accidentally put your clothes in the dryer with the gum on it.

You can dip a q-tip into petroleum jelly and apply it to the gum to loosen it. Apply the jelly on the edges of the gum. This should soften the gum, making it easier to remove it.

To remove the petroleum stain on your fabric, you should immediately put your cloth in the washer and use a stain-removing detergent.

12. Use a Hairdryer

If the gum is stuck on cotton fabric, you can use a hairdryer. Be sure to use a regular hairdryer with heat adjustment settings. The cool setting in a hairdryer will not do the trick.

If you want better chances of removing the gum stain faster, feel free to use the highest heat setting. The hot air from the dryer will cause the gum to melt and loosen. Once you start noticing the gum soften, you can peel it off or scrape it with a butter knife.

13. Use a Tea Kettle

Removing gum with steam is a great technique. Heat some water in a tea kettle. Once the water starts steaming, hold up your cloth close to the steam. The steam will soften the gum, and you can scrape it off with a toothbrush.

Alternatively, if you have a clothes steamer, you can use that. You can follow the steps mentioned above.

14. Use an Adhesive Remover

You purchase ready-to-use adhesive removers to make your task easier. Here are some adhesive removers from Amazon you can use:

3M Gum Remover: This will help you remove gum without any sticky residue. All you need to do is apply the remover liquid to the gum’s surface and let it rest for a minute to soften the gum. Then, you can use a spoon, butter knife, or spatula to lift the gum from the edges. This product might irritate the skin, so be sure to use it while wearing gloves.

Goo Gone Adhesive Remover: This adhesive remover can be used on carpet, clothing, and hard surfaces to remove chewing gum, stickers, and decals. Apply the remover to the surface of the gum and after a minute, scrape it off with a butter knife. After removing the gum, throw your clothing in the washer separately. It is important to note that this product is not meant to be used on suede, leather, or silk.

WD-40: WD-40 is a multi-use aerosol spray. This is one of the quickest methods to remove gum from your clothes. You just need to spray a tiny amount of WD-40 onto the surface of the gum for a minute or two. Use a butter knife or a toothbrush to scrape it off. This is a quick and hassle-free method and doesn’t leave any stains behind.

15. Apply Lanacane

Lanacane is a cream used for skin conditions like insect bites and itching. It also works to remove gum from clothing. Lanacane is available in any drug store. Apply some lanacane on the gum’s surface and let it sit for thirty seconds or less.

The chemicals inside the lanacane, like glycol and ethanol, speed up the process of removing the gum. After thirty seconds, use a butter knife to scrape off the gum. After removing the gum, put your cloth in the washer.

16. Use Coconut Oil

If the chewing gum is stuck to a synthetic garment, you can use coconut oil to remove the gum. Take one tablespoon of coconut oil and pour it into a small bowl. Place this bowl in the microwave for thirty seconds or less. The oil should be warm and not too hot.

Apply the warm coconut oil on the gum’s surface using a toothbrush. Keep rubbing it until the gum softens, and you can start scraping it off with the toothbrush.

Once the gum comes off, wash your garment in the washing machine with warm water to remove the coconut oil smell or any stain. It is best to use detergent that is effective against oil or grease.

Final Thoughts

Chewing gum is stubborn and won’t readily come off in the washer. However, there is no need to worry about gum stains because there are several ways to fix it.

If you are looking for quick ways to remove gum, you can try using ready-to-use adhesive removers available on the market.

If you have light-colored garments, you can soak them in boiling water and scrape the gum with a toothbrush. Another technique is to soak the affected area in lemon juice before scraping it off. For dark-colored garments, you can apply peanut butter to the gum before removing it.
